    Despite the increasing use of electronic payments, currency retains an important role in the payments system of every country. Two aspects of currency usage drive currency design worldwide: deterring counterfeiting and making paper currency accessible to the visually impaired. Further, among the world's currencies, only U.S. banknotes are widely owned and used in transactions outside their country of issue (although the euro also has some external circulation). In this article, we compare and contrast major currencies and their design features. We conclude that the designs of the two most widely used currencies in the world-the U.S. dollar and the euro-have successfully deterred counterfeiting; data on other currencies are not public. In this article, the authors compare and contrast trade-offs among currency design features, including those primarily intended to deter counterfeiting and those to improve usability by the visually impaired. The authors conclude that periodic changes in the design of currency are an important aspect of counterfeit deterrence and that currency designers worldwide generally have been successful in efforts to deter counterfeiting. At the same time, currency designers have sought to be sensitive to the needs of the visually impaired. Although trade-offs among goals sometimes have forced compromises, new technologies promise banknotes that are both more difficult to counterfeit and more accessible to the visually impaired.     Template Generation from Postmarks Using Cascaded Unsupervised Learning

    Information in historical datasets comes in many forms. We are working with a set of World War I era postcards that contain hand written text, some preprinted text, postage stamps and postmark/cancellation stamps. The postmarks are of considerable interest to collectors looking for images of samples they had not previously seen. The postmarks also provide information on the originating location of the card that complements the information in the address block. The postmarks vary considerably with towns and dates, but also styles. The styles can be grouped into categories. A method for automatically extracting templates for each category of these postmark stamps is described. The problem is complicated by the high levels of degradation present in the cards. The approach uses a cascade of unsupervised learning steps separated with image cleaning. This introduces averaging steps, which reduces noise. It also provides a reduction in the number of comparisons between samples. While merges happen at each stage, the number of times merges are needed within each stage is reduced. The templates once extracted can be used to group the postmarks, and will contribute information about the postmark content to better separate the postmark from the paper and other interfering marks to extract further information about the postmarks and postcards

    Adaptive Methods for Robust Document Image Understanding

    A vast amount of digital document material is continuously being produced as part of major digitization efforts around the world. In this context, generic and efficient automatic solutions for document image understanding represent a stringent necessity. We propose a generic framework for document image understanding systems, usable for practically any document types available in digital form. Following the introduced workflow, we shift our attention to each of the following processing stages in turn: quality assurance, image enhancement, color reduction and binarization, skew and orientation detection, page segmentation and logical layout analysis. We review the state of the art in each area, identify current defficiencies, point out promising directions and give specific guidelines for future investigation. We address some of the identified issues by means of novel algorithmic solutions putting special focus on generality, computational efficiency and the exploitation of all available sources of information. More specifically, we introduce the following original methods: a fully automatic detection of color reference targets in digitized material, accurate foreground extraction from color historical documents, font enhancement for hot metal typesetted prints, a theoretically optimal solution for the document binarization problem from both computational complexity- and threshold selection point of view, a layout-independent skew and orientation detection, a robust and versatile page segmentation method, a semi-automatic front page detection algorithm and a complete framework for article segmentation in periodical publications. The proposed methods are experimentally evaluated on large datasets consisting of real-life heterogeneous document scans. The obtained results show that a document understanding system combining these modules is able to robustly process a wide variety of documents with good overall accuracy

    An Analysis of the art image interchange cycle within fine art museums

    The art image interchange cycle is the procedure carried out by fine art museums in reproducing fine artwork --starting with the imaging of the original work, then digital processing, and lastly, repurposing for output to achieve a high-quality replica in a range of possible media. There are many areas of importance within this process, such as digital image processing, standardization, test targets use, and color management. This research has sought to analyze the fine art image interchange through understanding the background areas and how they apply, as well as benchmarking what museums are already doing with the intention of improving and standardizing the process. Upon completion of an adequate background study of the literature (concentrated on color management theory, test targets use, and fine art reproduction) this research focused on four main areas. First, a review of international standards was established and how they can be used to benefit museums. Second, a review of test targets was conducted and how best they can be implemented in fine art reproduction. Third, a number of museum workflows were benchmarked and documented - a workflow experiment was created and implemented for documentation purposes (and future image quality analysis). Lastly, a case study was conducted of a local fine art museum\u27s process of creating a fine art catalog, to better understand an average museum\u27s fine art image interchange. The research concluded that the practice of standardization could be improved within museums. As far as test targets, there was a large range of understanding and use. The benchmarking of three museums was completed, and it was determined that the process of documenting workflow was a difficult task to have implemented.
