From 12.06.05 to 17.06.2005 the Dagstuhl Seminar 05241 ``Synthesis and Planning\u27\u27 was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the seminar topics and goals in general. Links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided, if available

Exploration of the influence of 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation on the structure of d[CACG(IDU)G]

    Get PDF
The first antiviral nucleoside 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine (IDU) against herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 is a thymidine analogue, i.e. the C5 methyl group is replaced by an I atom. The structure of the self-complementary hexamer d[CACG(IDU)G] was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The orthorhombic crystals belong to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 18.16, b = 30.03, c = 41.99 Angstrom. Refinement in the resolution range 20 - 1.3 Angstrom converged with a final R1 = 0.167, including 43 water molecules and two cobalt hexammine complexes. The incorporation of a large I atom has only minor consequences for the overall structure as is noticed in the IDU . A base pairs, which are of the common Watson - Crick type. To contribute to the still puzzling mechanism of this historically important agent, details of base stacking, helical parameters, hydration etc. have been studied. A general scheme of cobalt hexammine-binding modes in Z-DNA is provided, revealing similar binding modes for the reported structure

ACE 10 Question “Has the integration of digital reporting skills in earlier classes enhanced student learning and understanding of web- and mobile-based reporting? The college is now introducing data visualiza4on into its “Reporting II” class (JOUR 302), added social media in the beginning editing class, (JOUR 201) and created an online storytelling class, JOUR 304) into its required curriculum. Expected outcomes: These updates will help demonstrate to the college and professionals that students will leave this course with new digital skill sets that allow them to produce creative or scholarly products that exhibit appropriate technical proficiency, information collection, synthesis, critical interpretation, presentation and reflection. Earth materials research: Report of a Workshop on Physics and Chemistry of Earth Materials

    Get PDF
The report concludes that an enhanced effort of earth materials research is necessary to advance the understanding of the processes that shape the planet. In support of such an effort, there are new classes of experiments, new levels of analytical sensitivity and precision, and new levels of theory that are now applicable in understanding the physical and chemical properties of geological materials. The application of these capabilities involves the need to upgrade and make greater use of existing facilities as well as the development of new techniques. A concomitant need is for a sample program involving their collection, synthesis, distribution, and analysis

Adaptive Information Visualization for Personalized Access to Educational Digital Libraries

    Get PDF
Personalization is one of the emerging ways to increase the power of modern Digital Libraries. The Knowledge Sea II system presented in this paper explores social navigation support, an approach for providing personalized guidance within the open corpus of educational resources. Following the concepts of social navigation we have attempted to organize a personalized navigation support that is based on past learners’ interaction with the system. The study indicates that Knowledge Sea II became the students' primary tool for accessing the open corpus documents used in a programming course. The social navigation support implemented in this system was considered useful by students participating in the study of Knowledge Sea II. At the same time, some user comments indicated the need to provide more powerful navigational support, such as the ability to rank the usefulness of a page

Who Is a Journalist and Why Does it Matter? Disentangling the Legal and Ethical Arguments

    Get PDF
The contemporary debate about who is a journalist is occurring in two distinct domains: law and professional ethics. Although the debate in these domains is focused on separate problems, participants treat the central question as essentially the same. This article suggests that the debates in law and professional ethics have to be resolved independently and that debate within those domains needs to be more nuanced. In law, it must vary depending on whether the context involves constitutional law, statutory law, or the distribution of informal privileges by government officials. In professional ethics, the debate should not be oriented around a single definitional threshold but should identify tiers that take account of different communicators’ unique goals, tactics, and values
