    Embodied cognition: A field guide

    Get PDF
The nature of cognition is being re-considered. Instead of emphasizing formal operations on abstract symbols, the new approach foregrounds the fact that cognition is, rather, a situated activity, and suggests that thinking beings ought therefore be considered first and foremost as acting beings. The essay reviews recent work in Embodied Cognition, provides a concise guide to its principles, attitudes and goals, and identifies the physical grounding project as its central research focus

Learning to program using immersive approaches: A case study learning SAS®, IBM Bluemix and Watson Analytics

    Get PDF
Learning to program is an activity which needs the learner to develop a range of new skills. Traditionally, this has been achieved in Universities by a presenting a series of structured lectures and tutorials covering the syntax and grammar of the language. This approach often leads to disengagement by many of the weaker students. It is becoming clear that this may not be the most effective approach in the twenty first century as a result of the continuous development of software packages which leads to the need to continually revise the teaching materials. In addition, modern millennial students demand engaging modes of learning that al-so prepare them for employment. This paper evaluates an approach which pro-vides a directed, immersive learning approach that mirrors the real world of em-ployment, develops both the requisite technical skills together with the fundamen-tal soft skills necessary for employment and prepares the students for lifelong learning and development and maintenance of new skills and languages. It also provides an intensely engaging environment that allows students to demonstrate the wide range of technical and soft skills that are necessary for a successful ca-reer. This approach also leads to high levels of achievement from the students and reduces stress levels in the academics leading the courses. The approach should be applicable to most STEM subjects which require the use of specialist software packages

A Group Protocol for Promoting Wellness in Rural Community-Dwelling Older Adults

    Get PDF
Purpose: In the United States, there are currently 46 million citizens aged 65 and older. This number is projected to more than double by the year 2060 (Mather, 2016). As the elderly population continues to grow, the need for evidence-based, client centered prevention programs for community-dwelling older adults becomes more crucial to promote independence and preserve well-being in the community. Older adults living in rural areas are at an even higher risk of losing independence secondary to decline in activity tolerance, which further elevates their need for targeted interventions (Park, Kim, & Lee, 2015). Creating a preventative program to maintain independence will help increase engagement in meaningful occupations and prolong older adults’ ability to age in place (Harrell, Lynott, Guzman, & Lampkin, 2014). Therefore, the purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a group protocol to address the need for occupation-based interventions in rural community-dwelling older adults. Methodology: An extensive literature review on the rural community-dwelling older adult population and factors affecting the population’s wellness was conducted using the search databases PubMed and CINAHL. Government and non-profit centers for information regarding aging were also used for the literature review and the development of educational materials for older adults. To guide the creation of the product, the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) was used. Results/Conclusions: A 12-week group protocol was created to promote independence and community engagement in older adults living in rural communities. Each session focuses on an occupation that research has shown plays a role in the wellness of older adults. This group protocol is intended to be implemented by occupational therapists working in rural communities as a community-based wellness promotion group intervention. Information is included for the facilitator regarding MOHO concepts and facilitation techniques

In or Out? Perceptions of Inclusion and Exclusion Among AIS Members

    Get PDF
People want a sense of community, a benefit that a professional association such as the Association for Information Systems (AIS) can provide to members. When attempts to create a shared experience fall short and we feel excluded, we disengage and stop further attempts to participate. In this paper, we lay a foundation for individual and association inclusion practices in the AIS. First, we describe the current state of inclusion practices in the academy and in the AIS. Then, we describe findings from a survey of AIS members that measured their perceptions about inclusion and exclusion and factors that cultivated these perceptions. In doing so, we establish a baseline against which we can measure future change. Our data yields key insights about diversity and inclusion in the AIS, and we offer recommendations for all individuals in various roles and positions in the AIS
