AI/ML Algorithms and Applications in VLSI Design and Technology
An evident challenge ahead for the integrated circuit (IC) industry in the
nanometer regime is the investigation and development of methods that can
reduce the design complexity ensuing from growing process variations and
curtail the turnaround time of chip manufacturing. Conventional methodologies
employed for such tasks are largely manual; thus, time-consuming and
resource-intensive. In contrast, the unique learning strategies of artificial
intelligence (AI) provide numerous exciting automated approaches for handling
complex and data-intensive tasks in very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design
and testing. Employing AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms in VLSI design
and manufacturing reduces the time and effort for understanding and processing
the data within and across different abstraction levels via automated learning
algorithms. It, in turn, improves the IC yield and reduces the manufacturing
turnaround time. This paper thoroughly reviews the AI/ML automated approaches
introduced in the past towards VLSI design and manufacturing. Moreover, we
discuss the scope of AI/ML applications in the future at various abstraction
levels to revolutionize the field of VLSI design, aiming for high-speed, highly
intelligent, and efficient implementations

A Review and Analysis of Automatic Optical Inspection and Quality Monitoring Methods in Electronics Industry
Electronics industry is one of the fastest evolving, innovative, and most competitive industries. In order to meet the high consumption demands on electronics components, quality standards of the products must be well-maintained. Automatic optical inspection (AOI) is one of the non-destructive techniques used in quality inspection of various products. This technique is considered robust and can replace human inspectors who are subjected to dull and fatigue in performing inspection tasks. A fully automated optical inspection system consists of hardware and software setups. Hardware setup include image sensor and illumination settings and is responsible to acquire the digital image, while the software part implements an inspection algorithm to extract the features of the acquired images and classify them into defected and non-defected based on the user requirements. A sorting mechanism can be used to separate the defective products from the good ones. This article provides a comprehensive review of the various AOI systems used in electronics, micro-electronics, and opto-electronics industries. In this review the defects of the commonly inspected electronic components, such as semiconductor wafers, flat panel displays, printed circuit boards and light emitting diodes, are first explained. Hardware setups used in acquiring images are then discussed in terms of the camera and lighting source selection and configuration. The inspection algorithms used for detecting the defects in the electronic components are discussed in terms of the preprocessing, feature extraction and classification tools used for this purpose. Recent articles that used deep learning algorithms are also reviewed. The article concludes by highlighting the current trends and possible future research directions.Framework of the IQONIC Project; European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program
Autonomously Reconfigurable Artificial Neural Network on a Chip
Artificial neural network (ANN), an established bio-inspired computing paradigm, has proved very effective in a variety of real-world problems and particularly useful for various emerging biomedical applications using specialized ANN hardware. Unfortunately, these ANN-based systems are increasingly vulnerable to both transient and permanent faults due to unrelenting advances in CMOS technology scaling, which sometimes can be catastrophic. The considerable resource and energy consumption and the lack of dynamic adaptability make conventional fault-tolerant techniques unsuitable for future portable medical solutions. Inspired by the self-healing and self-recovery mechanisms of human nervous system, this research seeks to address reliability issues of ANN-based hardware by proposing an Autonomously Reconfigurable Artificial Neural Network (ARANN) architectural framework. Leveraging the homogeneous structural characteristics of neural networks, ARANN is capable of adapting its structures and operations, both algorithmically and microarchitecturally, to react to unexpected neuron failures. Specifically, we propose three key techniques --- Distributed ANN, Decoupled Virtual-to-Physical Neuron Mapping, and Dual-Layer Synchronization --- to achieve cost-effective structural adaptation and ensure accurate system recovery. Moreover, an ARANN-enabled self-optimizing workflow is presented to adaptively explore a "Pareto-optimal" neural network structure for a given application, on the fly. Implemented and demonstrated on a Virtex-5 FPGA, ARANN can cover and adapt 93% chip area (neurons) with less than 1% chip overhead and O(n) reconfiguration latency. A detailed performance analysis has been completed based on various recovery scenarios
Machine learning methods for fault classification
With the constant evolution and ever-increasing transistor densities in semiconductor technology, error rates are on the rise. Errors that occur on semiconductor chips can be attributed to permanent, transient or intermittent faults. Out of these errors, once permanent errors appear, they do not go away and once intermittent faults appear on chips, the probability that they will occur again is high, making these two types of faults critical. Transient faults occur very rarely, making them non-critical. Incorrect classification during manufacturing tests in case of critical faults, may result in failure of the chip during operational lifetime or decrease in product quality, whereas discarding chips with non-critical faults may result in unnecessary yield loss. Existing mechanisms to distinguish between the fault types are mostly rule-based, and as fault types start manifesting similarly as we move to lower technology nodes, these rules become obsolete over time. Hence, rules need to be updated every time the technology is changed. Machine learning approaches have shown that the uncertainty can be compensated with previous experience. In our case, the ambiguity of classification rules can be compensated by storing past classification decisions and learn from those for accurate classification. This thesis presents an effective solution to the problem of fault classification in VLSI chips using Support Vector Machine (SVM) based machine learning techniques
Machine Learning Approaches for Natural Resource Data
Abstract
Real life applications involving efficient management of natural resources are dependent on accurate geographical information. This information is usually obtained by manual on-site data collection, via automatic remote sensing methods, or by the mixture of the two. Natural resource management, besides accurate data collection, also requires detailed analysis of this data, which in the era of data flood can be a cumbersome process. With the rising trend in both computational power and storage capacity, together with lowering hardware prices, data-driven decision analysis has an ever greater role.
In this thesis, we examine the predictability of terrain trafficability conditions and forest attributes by using a machine learning approach with geographic information system data. Quantitative measures on the prediction performance of terrain conditions using natural resource data sets are given through five distinct research areas located around Finland. Furthermore, the estimation capability of key forest attributes is inspected with a multitude of modeling and feature selection techniques. The research results provide empirical evidence on whether the used natural resource data is sufficiently accurate enough for practical applications, or if further refinement on the data is needed. The results are important especially to forest industry since even slight improvements to the natural resource data sets utilized in practice can result in high saves in terms of operation time and costs.
Model evaluation is also addressed in this thesis by proposing a novel method for estimating the prediction performance of spatial models. Classical model goodness of fit measures usually rely on the assumption of independently and identically distributed data samples, a characteristic which normally is not true in the case of spatial data sets. Spatio-temporal data sets contain an intrinsic property called spatial autocorrelation, which is partly responsible for breaking these assumptions. The proposed cross validation based evaluation method provides model performance estimation where optimistic bias due to spatial autocorrelation is decreased by partitioning the data sets in a suitable way.

Spatio-temporaaliset datajoukot sisältävät luontaisen ominaisuuden, jota kutsutaan spatiaaliseksi autokorrelaatioksi. Tämä ominaisuus on osittain vastuussa näiden oletusten rikkomisesta. Esitetty ristiinvalidointiin perustuva evaluointimenetelmä tarjoaa mallin ennustuskyvyn mitan, missä spatiaalisen autokorrelaation vaikutusta vähennetään jakamalla datajoukot sopivalla tavalla.

Novel methods to elucidate core classes in multi-dimensional biomedical data
Breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in women, is a complex disease characterised by multiple molecular alterations. Current routine clinical management relies on availability of robust clinical and pathologic prognostic and predictive factors, like the Nottingham Prognostic Index, to support decision making. Recent advances in highthroughput molecular technologies supported the evidence of a biologic heterogeneity of breast cancer.
This thesis is a multi-disciplinary work involving both computer scientists and molecular pathologists. It focuses on the development of advanced computational models for the classification of breast cancer into sub-types of the disease based on protein expression levels of selected markers. In a previous study conducted at the University of Nottingham, it has been suggested that immunohistochemical analysis may be used to identify distinct biological classes of breast cancer.
The objectives of this work were related both to the clinical and technical aspects. From a clinical point of view, the aim was to encourage a multiple techniques approach when dealing with classification and clustering. From a technical point of view, one of the goals was to verify the stability of groups obtained from different unsupervised clustering algorithms, applied to the same data, and to compare and combine the different solutions with the ones available from the previous study. These aims and objectives were considered in the attempt to fill a number of gaps in the body of knowledge. Several research questions were raised, including how to combine the results obtained by a multi-techniques approach for clustering and whether the medical decision making process could be moved in the direction of personalised healthcare.
An original framework to identify core representative classes in a dataset was developed and is described in this thesis. Using different clustering algorithms and several validity indices to explore the best number of groups to split the data, a set of classes may be defined by considering those points that remain stable across different clustering techniques. This set of representative classes may be then characterised resorting to usual statistical techniques and validated using supervised learning. Each step of this framework has been studied separately, resulting in different chapters of this thesis. The whole approach has been successfully applied to a novel set of histone markers for breast cancer provided by the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham. Although further tests are needed to validate and improve the proposed framework, these results make it a good candidate for being transferred to the real world of medical decision making.
Other contributions to knowledge may be extracted from this work. Firstly, six breast cancer subtypes have been identified, using consensus clustering, and characterised in terms of clinical outcome. Two of these classes were new in the literature. The second contribution is related to supervised learning. A novel method, based on the naive Bayes classifier, was developed to cope with the non-normality of covariates in many real world problems. This algorithm was validated over known data sets and compared with traditional approaches, obtaining better results in two examples.
All these contributions, and especially the novel framework may also have a clinical impact, as the overall medical care is gradually moving in the direction of a personalised one. By training a small number of doctors it may be possible for them to use the framework directly and find different sub-types of the disease they are investigating
