    Delay Tolerant Networking over the Metropolitan Public Transportation

    We discuss MDTN: a delay tolerant application platform built on top of the Public Transportation System (PTS) and able to provide service access while exploiting opportunistic connectivity. Our solution adopts a carrier-based approach where buses act as data collectors for user requests requiring Internet access. Simulations based on real maps and PTS routes with state-of-the-art routing protocols demonstrate that MDTN represents a viable solution for elastic nonreal-time service delivery. Nevertheless, performance indexes of the considered routing policies show that there is no golden rule for optimal performance and a tailored routing strategy is required for each specific case

    Enhanced Community-Based Routing for Low-Capacity Pocket Switched Networks

    Sensor devices and the emergent networks that they enable are capable of transmitting information between data sources and a permanent data sink. Since these devices have low-power and intermittent connectivity, latency of the data may be tolerated in an effort to save energy for certain classes of data. The BUBBLE routing algorithm developed by Hui et al. in 2008 provides consistent routing by employing a model which computes individual nodes popularity from sets of nodes and then uses these popularity values for forwarding decisions. This thesis considers enhancements to BUBBLE based on the hypothesis that nodes do form groups and certain centrality values of nodes within these groups can be used to improve routing decisions further. Built on this insight, there are two algorithms proposed in this thesis. First is the Community-Based- Forwarding (CBF), which uses pairwise group interactions and pairwise node-to-group interactions as a measure of popularity for routing messages. By having a different measure of popularity than BUBBLE, as an additional factor in determining message forwarding, CBF is a more conservative routing scheme than BUBBLE. Thus, it provides consistently superior message transmission and delivery performance at an acceptable delay cost in resource constrained environments. To overcome this drawback, the concept of unique interaction pattern within groups of nodes is introduced in CBF and it is further renewed into an enhanced algorithm known as Hybrid-Community-Based- Forwarding (HCBF). Utilizing this factor will channel messages along the entire path with consideration for higher probability of contact with the destination group and the destination node. Overall, the major contribution of this thesis is to design and evaluate an enhanced social based routing algorithm for resource-constrained Pocket Switched Networks (PSNs), which will optimize energy consumption related to data transfer. It will do so by explicitly considering features of communities in order to reduce packet loss while maintaining high delivery ratio and reduced delay

    FROM WIDE- TO SHORT-RANGE COMMUNICATIONS: USING HUMAN INTERACTIONS TO DESIGN NEW MOBILE SYSTEMS AND SERVICES

    The widespread diffusion of mobile devices has radically changed the way people interact with each other and with object of their daily life. In particular, modern mobile devices are equipped with multiple radio interfaces allowing users to interact at different spatial granularities according to the various radio technology they use. The research community is progressively moving to heterogeneous network solutions which include many different wireless technologies seamlessly integrated to address a wide variety of use cases and requirements. In 5th- Generation (5G) of mobile network we can find multiple network typology such as device-to-device (D2D), vehicular networks, machine-to-machine(M2M), and more, which are integrated in the existing mobile-broadband technology such as LTE and its future evolutions. In this complex and rich scenario, many issues and challenges are still open from a technological, architectural, and mobile services and applications points of view. In this work we provide network solutions, mobile services, and applications consistent with the 5G mobile network vision by using users interactions as a common starting point. We focus on three different spatial granularities, long, medium/short, and micro mediated by cellular network, Wi-Fi, and NFC radio technologies, respectively. We deal with various kinds of issues and challenges according to the distinct spatial granularity we consider. We start with an user centric approach based on the analysis of the characteristics and the peculiarities of each kind of interaction. Following this path, we provide contributions to support the design of new network architectures, and the development of novel mobile services and applications

    Unterbrechungstolerante Fahrzeugkommunikation im öffentlichen Personennahverkehr

    Communication systems play an important role in the efficient operation of public transport networks. Recently, traditional voice-centric real-time communication is complemented and often replaced by data-centric asynchronous machine-to-machine communication. Disruption tolerant networking in combination with license-exempt high bandwidth technologies have the potential to reduce infrastructure investments and operating costs for such applications, because a continuous end-to-end connectivity is no longer required. In this thesis the feasibility of such a system is investigated and confirmed. First, realistic use-cases are introduced and the requirements to the communication system are analyzed. Then the channel characteristics of several WLAN-based technologies are experimentally evaluated in real public transport scenarios. Since the results are promising, the next step is gaining a deeper understanding of the special mobility properties in public transport networks. Therefore, we analyze existing traces as well as our own newly acquired trace. Our trace features additional operator meta-data that is not available for existing traces, and we report on unexpected properties that have not been quantified before. Then the trace is combined with the experimentally obtained channel parameters in order to analyze the characteristics of inter-vehicle contacts. We present the statistical distribution of situation-specific contact events and the impact of radio range on contact capacity. Then results of all steps above are used to propose a routing scheme that is optimized for public transport networks. In the final simulation-based evaluation we show that this router outperforms previously proposed algorithms.Kommunikationssysteme leisten einen wichtigen Beitrag zum effizienten Betrieb des öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs. Seit einigen Jahren wird dabei der Sprechfunk zunehmend durch asynchronen M2M-Datenfunk ergänzt und in vielen Anwendungsgebieten sogar vollständig ersetzt. Die Kombination aus unterbrechungstoleranten Netzwerken und lizenzfreien Drahtlostechnologien birgt ein erhebliches Potential zur Reduzierung von Infrastrukturinvestitionen und Betriebskosten, da für diese Anwendungen eine dauerhafte Ende-zu-Ende Verbindung nicht mehr erforderlich ist. In dieser Arbeit wird die Machbarkeit eines solchen Systems untersucht und belegt. Zunächst werden dazu Anwendungsfälle vorgestellt und deren Anforderungen an das Kommunikationssystem analysiert. Dann werden die Kanalcharakteristika mehrerer WLAN-Technologien im realen ÖPNV-Umfeld experimentell ermittelt und bewertet. Auf Grundlage der erfolgversprechenden Ergebnisse werden im nächsten Schritt die besonderen Mobilitätseigenschaften von ÖPNV-Netzen untersucht. Zu diesen Zweck analysieren wir existierende und eigene, neu aufgezeichnete Bewegungsdaten von ÖPNV-Fahrzeugen. Unsere Daten enthalten dabei zusätzliche Metadaten der Verkehrsbetriebe, die zuvor nicht verfügbar waren, so dass wir unerwartete Effekte beschreiben und erstmals quantifizieren können. Anschließend werden die Bewegungsdaten mit den zuvor experimentell erfassten Kanaleigenschaften kombiniert, um so die Kommunikationskontakte zwischen den Fahrzeugen genauer zu betrachten. Wir stellen die statistische Verteilung der situationsabhängigen Kontaktereignisse vor, sowie den Einfluss der Funkreichweite auf die Kontaktkapazität. Dann werden die Ergebnisse aller vorhergehenden Schritte verwendet, um ein neues, optimiertes Routingverfahren für ÖPNV-Netze vorzuschlagen. In der simulationsbasierten Evaluation belegen wir, dass dieser Router die Leistung bisher bekannter Verfahren übertrifft
