    Get PDF
With cloud computing because increasingly popular, libraries are finding many ways that it can meet their technology needs better than traditional technology infrastructure. Some of the benefits libraries can get from cloud computing include less need for libraries to provide their own full technology infrastructure, as well as less need for skilled IT workers to install and administer this technology. However, libraries opting to use cloud computing solutions also need to consider potential drawbacks such as the loss of control, a lack of customization options, and privacy and security concerns. Companies offering cloud computing services may offer several different options to contend with these concerns, including public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud solutions. Additional considerations that libraries must take into account when moving to cloud infrastructure are outlined, along with multiple examples of how cloud computing is being used in libraries today

Technological evolution is an influencer for libraries alertness to meet the rising information needs of users. The purpose of the study was to identify and review possible measures that academic libraries could consider to secure data in the cloud and safeguard research data/assets. The study was guided by descriptive design, which made use of secondary data to address the problem of low utilization of the cloud among academic libraries in African. The findings of the study revealed a low adoption rate of cloud computing by academic libraries in Africa. It was also proven that major challenges that inhibited the adoption of cloud computing by academic libraries were lack of institutional policy guidelines and authentication procedures from cloud service providers. Recommendations of the study were that academic libraries should fully utilize cloud computing services to store research data to enhance access and visibility. The Management of academic libraries should put in place policies and guidelines that will guide in the selection of cloud service provider for research data storage

Cloud Computing Application for accessing E-resources by University Librarians: Case Study of University Librarians in Niger Delta Region. Abstract This study investigated cloud computing applications for accessing e-resources by Librarians in university libraries in Niger Delta Region, Nigeria. In this study, the descriptive research design was adopted, and 43 items self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. In the selection of the university libraries, the researcher used the stratified random sampling technique to select the university libraries. One hundred and fifty (150) librarians from the nine (9) the Niger Delta States were selected from three (3) centrally located states which include Delta, Bayelsa, and Edo as the target population was four hundred and thirty-two (432) librarians. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables and percentages. The findings discovered that librarians in university libraries in Niger Delta use applications of cloud computing. Regarding librarians’ response to the question of librarians’ cloud computing applications, the majority of librarians agreed that they use cloud computing applications to access, store and share e-resources. In addition, a strong recommendation was made that Institutions and governments should provide internet and, facilities for effective and efficient cloud computing applications in accessing e-resources

E-learning is a means of becoming literate, involving newmechanisms for communication, such as: computernetworks, multimedia, content portals, search engines, electronic libraries, distancelearning, and web-enabled classrooms. Different web basedapplications such as email, real-time conference, cloud computing,WebCam etc. are being used as important tools in the process of elearning.Cloud Computing is a completely new VirtualInformation and Communication Technology and it is known asthe third revolution after PC and Internet in IT. To be morespecific, Cloud Computing is the improvement of DistributedComputing, Parallel Computing, Grid Computing and DistributedDatabases. The basic principle of Cloud Computing is makingtasks distributed in large numbers of distributed computers. Bycollecting large quantities of information and resources stored inpersonal computers, mobile phones and other equipment, CloudComputing is capable of integrating them and putting them on thepublic cloud for providing required information to the users.LIBRARY is not only a Knowledge Ocean, its main aim is toprovide quality and satisfactory information services for all theusers. In this Digital era, to provide timely updated digitalinformation services and to promote Research and Developments, the Library should improve itself by adopting new technologies.Cloud computing is one of the fastest emerging Digital Informationand Communication Technologies, being applied and used byvarious Libraries and Companies at present. Cloud Computing isthe use of outsourced Digital Information resources which can beaccessed through networking or Internet. Dissemination ofrequired and relevant information to the users of the Library canbe provided easily and regularly through the cloud computingservices. Since Cloud computing offers flexibility in usage andreduces cost, it is very much suitable and accessible for promotingresearch and development. This research paper explains aboutwhat are Cloud Computing, its History, benefits, advantages, andservices. How Cloud computing services can be adopted, variousbest companies of Cloud computing, kinds of services which can beprovided through Cloud computing also have been discussed in thispaper

Libraries may soon be building and managing their own data centers. This model would let libraries maintain more control over the applications and data stores that contain sensitive, private information about patrons. Provisioning and maintenance of infrastructure for Web based digital library present several challenges. In this paper we discuss problems faced with digital library and development efforts to overcome that problem. Infrastructure virtualization and cloud computing are particularly attractive choices which is challenged by both growth in the size of the indexed document collection, new features and most prominently usage. With the purpose of applying Cloud Computing to university library, the paper describes the current status of user service models in university libraries. Then it proposed to improve current user service model with Cloud Computing. This paper explores some of the security issues surrounding data location, mobility and availability
