    PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT OF INNOVATION FIELDS : APPLYING CK DESIGN THEORY IN CROSS INDUSTRY EXPLORATORY PARTNERSHIP

    Our paper refers to an industrial practice based on an integrated theoretical framework of design, CK design theory (Hatchuel and Weil, 2002, Hatchuel and Weil, 2003, Hatchuel and Weil, 2008), to support people in management of innovation fields. This study is based on an empirical case in a new form of R&D partnerships, the Cross Industry Exploratory Partnerships. MINATEC IDEAs Laboratory® is composed of a broad scope of partners 2 which aims to co-explore opportunities of micronanotechnologies. The paper deals with a strategic design tool, OPERA, which has been experimented since 2007 and involved participation of design team work and powerholders. During two years, creative insights and projects of the two laboratory's major innovation fields have been collected and structured within CK theory.     Complexity stage model of the medical device development based on economic evaluation-MedDee

    The development of a new product is essential for the progress and success of any company. The medical device market is very specific, which is challenging. Therefore, this paper assesses an economic model for medical device evaluation using the economic, health, technology regulatory, and present market knowledge to enable the cost-time conception for any applicant. The purpose of this study is to propose a comprehensive stage model of the medical device development to subsequently describe the financial expenditure of the entire development process. The identification of critical steps was based on the literature review, and analysis, and a comparison of the available medical device development stages and directives. Furthermore, a preliminary assessment of the medical device development steps and procedures on the basis of the interviews was performed. Six interviews were conducted with an average duration of one hour, focusing on areas: relevance and level of detail of the medical device development stages, involvement of economic methods, and applicability of the proposed model. Subsequently, the improvement and modification of the medical device investment process, based on respondents' responses, were conducted. The authors have proposed the complexity model MedDee-Medical Devices Development by Economic Evaluation. This model is comprised of six phases: initiation, concept, design, production, final verification, and market disposition in which the economic methods are incorporated.Web of Science125art. no. 175

    These Proceedings are composed of a selection of papers of the Workshop on Advances in Methodology and Applications of Decision Support Systems, organized by the System and Decision Sciences (SDS) Program of IIASA and the Japan Institute of Systems Research (JISR). The workshop was held at IIASA on August 20-22, 1990. The Methodology of Decision Analysis (MDA) Project of the SDS Program focuses on a system-analytical approach to decision support and is devoted to developing methodology, software and applications of decision support systems concentrated primarily around interactive systems for data analysis, interpretation and multiobjective decisionmaking, including uncertainty analysis and group decision making situations in both their cooperative and noncooperative aspects. The objectives of the research on decision support systems (DSS) performed in cooperation with the MDA Project are to: compare various approaches to decision support systems; advance theory and methodology of decision support; convert existing theories and methodologies into usable (simple to use, user-friendly and robust) tools that could easily be used in solving real-life problems. A principal characteristic of decision support systems is that they must be tuned to specific decision situations, to complex real-life characteristics of every application. Even if the theory and methodology of decision support is quite advanced, every application might provide impulses for further theoretical and methodological advances. Therefore the principle underlying this project is that theoretical and methodological research should be strongly connected to the implementation and applications of its results to sufficiently complicated, real-life examples. This approach results in obtaining really applicable working tools for decision support. The papers for this Proceedings have been selected according to the above summarized framework of the research activities. Therefore, the papers deal both with theoretical and methodological problems and with real-life applications

    Protsesside süva analüüs on võrdlemisi uus uuringute haru, mis täidab lünki äri protsesside ja erinevate IT süsteemide vahel. Sündmuste registreerimine on peamised protsesside süva analüüsi allikad, ning need fikseeritakse erinevate andmete allikatega, kaasa arvatud andmetebaase, ERP süsteeme, CRM süsteeme, auditori jälge, arsti infromatsiooni süsteeme, panga operatsioonide registreerimist jne. Saadud sellisest registreerumisest teade võimaldab meil avastada tõelist protsessi ja olemasoleva protsessi näite edasiseks analüüsimiseks, hindamiseks ja nende kvaliteedi pikaajliseks parandamiseks. Niiviisi, erinevad protsesside süva analüüsid arendatakse turul. Ehkki, on tunda piisavate ja mõistlike hindamise konstruktsioonide puudust, mis võiksid kasutajatel õige instrimendi valida. See diplomitöö pakub konstruktsiooni, mis võimaldab võrrelda protsesside analüüsi vahendeid nende funktsionaalsust uurides. Pakutud operatsioonid seotakse tüüpiliste probleemidega, mis mainitakse olemasolevate protsesside süva analüüsi kasutuse juhtudel. Seda konstruktsiooni kasutades, antud diplomitöö võrdleb kolme protsesside analüüsi vahendeid, nimelt ProM, Disco ja Celonis. Läbiviidud võrdlus näitab, et need kolm vahendid annavad võrdletavat funktsionaalsust, kuid erinevad selle poolest, mis viisil antakse funktionaalsust.Process mining is relatively young research area that meets the gap between businesses processes and various IT systems. Event logs are the primary sources for a process mining project and they are captured by different data sources including databases, ERP systems, CRM systems, audit trails, hospital information systems, bank transaction logs, etc. The extracted knowledge from this log enable us to discover the actual process and existing process model for further analysis, evaluation and continuous improvement in their quality. This way, various process mining tools have been developed in the market. Nevertheless, there is a lack of sufficent and comprehensive evaluation frameworks that assist users in selecting the right tool. This thesis proposes a framework that enables the comparison of process mining tools in terms of their functional features. The proposed operations are linked to typical problems reported in existing process mining use cases. Using this framework, the thesis compares three process mining tools, namely ProM, Disco and Celonis The comparison shows that while these tools provide comparable functionality they differ in terms of the way the functionality is provided

    An Optimisation-based Framework for Complex Business Process: Healthcare Application

    The Irish healthcare system is currently facing major pressures due to rising demand, caused by population growth, ageing and high expectations of service quality. This pressure on the Irish healthcare system creates a need for support from research institutions in dealing with decision areas such as resource allocation and performance measurement. While approaches such as modelling, simulation, multi-criteria decision analysis, performance management, and optimisation can – when applied skilfully – improve healthcare performance, they represent just one part of the solution. Accordingly, to achieve significant and sustainable performance, this research aims to develop a practical, yet effective, optimisation-based framework for managing complex processes in the healthcare domain. Through an extensive review of the literature on the aforementioned solution techniques, limitations of using each technique on its own are identified in order to define a practical integrated approach toward developing the proposed framework. During the framework validation phase, real-time strategies have to be optimised to solve Emergency Department performance issues in a major hospital. Results show a potential of significant reduction in patients average length of stay (i.e. 48% of average patient throughput time) whilst reducing the over-reliance on overstretched nursing resources, that resulted in an increase of staff utilisation between 7% and 10%. Given the high uncertainty in healthcare service demand, using the integrated framework allows decision makers to find optimal staff schedules that improve emergency department performance. The proposed optimum staff schedule reduces the average waiting time of patients by 57% and also contributes to reduce number of patients left without treatment to 8% instead of 17%. The developed framework has been implemented by the hospital partner with a high level of success

    Positioning cost overrun research in the philosophical debate: a case for critical realism.

    Construction management research, as a form of social research is confronted with the fundamental paradigmic dilemma of determining a core philosophical orientation, to be considered adequate and best suited to enquiry about construction phenomena. The underpinning argument being that, the differences in world views, will yield marked differences in the type of knowledge generated. An empirical profiling of cost overrun research reveals the predominance of mono-method studies based on questionnaire survey methods, correlative analysis and archival data modelling techniques, all of which are underlain by positivism. Such positivist philosophies, although methodologically valid, cannot adequately explain and provide in-depth understanding of the contextual drivers in construction organisations that trigger the more tangible technical constructs leading to the phenomena of cost growth in projects. Joining in the chorus call for methodological pluralism in construction industry research, this study makes a case for critical realism specifically in the context of cost overrun research
