Analysis and Compensation of Power Amplifier Distortions in Wireless Communication Systems
Wireless communication devices transmit message signals which should possess desirable power levels for quality transmission. Power amplifiers are devices in the wireless transmitters which increase the power of signals to the desired levels, but produce nonlinear distortions due to their saturation property, resulting in degradation of the quality of the transmitted signal. This thesis talks about the analysis and performance of communication systems in presence of power amplifier nonlinear distortions.
First, the thesis studies the effects of power amplifier nonlinear distortions on communication signals and proposes a simplified design for identification and compensation of the distortions at the receiver end of a wireless communication system using a two-step pilot signal approach. Step one involves the estimation of the channel state information of the wireless channel and step two estimates the power amplifier parameters. Then, the estimated power amplifier parameters are used for transmitter identification with the help of a testing procedure proposed in this thesis.
With the evolution of millimeter wave wireless communication systems today, study and analysis of these systems is the need of the hour. Thus, the second part of this thesis is extended to study the performance of millimeter wave wireless communication systems in presence of power amplifier nonlinear distortions and derives an analytical expression for evaluation of the symbol error probability for this system. The proposed analysis evaluates the performance of millimeter wave systems theoretically without the need of simulations, and is helpful in studying systems in the absence of actual hardware
An Overview on Application of Machine Learning Techniques in Optical Networks
Today's telecommunication networks have become sources of enormous amounts of
widely heterogeneous data. This information can be retrieved from network
traffic traces, network alarms, signal quality indicators, users' behavioral
data, etc. Advanced mathematical tools are required to extract meaningful
information from these data and take decisions pertaining to the proper
functioning of the networks from the network-generated data. Among these
mathematical tools, Machine Learning (ML) is regarded as one of the most
promising methodological approaches to perform network-data analysis and enable
automated network self-configuration and fault management. The adoption of ML
techniques in the field of optical communication networks is motivated by the
unprecedented growth of network complexity faced by optical networks in the
last few years. Such complexity increase is due to the introduction of a huge
number of adjustable and interdependent system parameters (e.g., routing
configurations, modulation format, symbol rate, coding schemes, etc.) that are
enabled by the usage of coherent transmission/reception technologies, advanced
digital signal processing and compensation of nonlinear effects in optical
fiber propagation. In this paper we provide an overview of the application of
ML to optical communications and networking. We classify and survey relevant
literature dealing with the topic, and we also provide an introductory tutorial
on ML for researchers and practitioners interested in this field. Although a
good number of research papers have recently appeared, the application of ML to
optical networks is still in its infancy: to stimulate further work in this
area, we conclude the paper proposing new possible research directions
Communication Subsystems for Emerging Wireless Technologies
The paper describes a multi-disciplinary design of modern communication systems. The design starts with the analysis of a system in order to define requirements on its individual components. The design exploits proper models of communication channels to adapt the systems to expected transmission conditions. Input filtering of signals both in the frequency domain and in the spatial domain is ensured by a properly designed antenna. Further signal processing (amplification and further filtering) is done by electronics circuits. Finally, signal processing techniques are applied to yield information about current properties of frequency spectrum and to distribute the transmission over free subcarrier channels
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Multiuser OFDM Systems with Wireless Information and Power Transfer
In this paper, we study the resource allocation algorithm design for
multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) downlink systems
with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. The algorithm design
is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for maximizing the energy
efficiency of data transmission (bit/Joule delivered to the users). In
particular, the problem formulation takes into account the minimum required
system data rate, heterogeneous minimum required power transfers to the users,
and the circuit power consumption. Subsequently, by exploiting the method of
time-sharing and the properties of nonlinear fractional programming, the
considered non-convex optimization problem is solved using an efficient
iterative resource allocation algorithm. For each iteration, the optimal power
allocation and user selection solution are derived based on Lagrange dual
decomposition. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed iterative
resource allocation algorithm achieves the maximum energy efficiency of the
system and reveal how energy efficiency, system capacity, and wireless power
transfer benefit from the presence of multiple users in the system.Comment: 6 pages. The paper has been accepted for publication at the IEEE

Finding Structural Information of RF Power Amplifiers using an Orthogonal Non-Parametric Kernel Smoothing Estimator
A non-parametric technique for modeling the behavior of power amplifiers is
presented. The proposed technique relies on the principles of density
estimation using the kernel method and is suited for use in power amplifier
modeling. The proposed methodology transforms the input domain into an
orthogonal memory domain. In this domain, non-parametric static functions are
discovered using the kernel estimator. These orthogonal, non-parametric
functions can be fitted with any desired mathematical structure, thus
facilitating its implementation. Furthermore, due to the orthogonality, the
non-parametric functions can be analyzed and discarded individually, which
simplifies pruning basis functions and provides a tradeoff between complexity
and performance. The results show that the methodology can be employed to model
power amplifiers, therein yielding error performance similar to
state-of-the-art parametric models. Furthermore, a parameter-efficient model
structure with 6 coefficients was derived for a Doherty power amplifier,
therein significantly reducing the deployment's computational complexity.
Finally, the methodology can also be well exploited in digital linearization
techniques.Comment: Matlab sample code (15 MB):

Signal-to-pump back-action and self-oscillation in Double-Pump Josephson Parametric Amplifier
We present the theory of a Josephson parametric amplifier employing two pump
sources. Our calculations are based on Input-Output Theory, and can easily be
generalized to any coupled system involving parametric interactions. We analyze
the operation of the device, taking into account the feedback introduced by the
reaction of the signal and noise on the pump power, and in this framework,
compute the response functions of interest - signal and idler gains, internal
gain of the amplifier, and self-oscillation signal amplitude. To account for
this back-action between signal and pump, we adopt a mean-field approach and
self-consistently explore the boundary between amplification and
self-oscillation. The coincidence of bifurcation and self-oscillation
thresholds reveals that the origin of coherent emission of the amplifier lies
in the multi-wave mixing of the noise components. Incorporation of the
back-action leads the system to exhibit hysteresis, dependent on parameters
like temperature and detuning from resonance. Our analysis also shows that the
resonance condition itself changes in the presence of back-action and this can
be understood in terms of the change in plasma frequency of the junction. The
potential of the double pump amplifier for quantum-limited measurements and as
a squeezer is also discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures, three appendice
