    Estimation of Driver's Gaze Region from Head Position and Orientation using Probabilistic Confidence Regions

    A smart vehicle should be able to understand human behavior and predict their actions to avoid hazardous situations. Specific traits in human behavior can be automatically predicted, which can help the vehicle make decisions, increasing safety. One of the most important aspects pertaining to the driving task is the driver's visual attention. Predicting the driver's visual attention can help a vehicle understand the awareness state of the driver, providing important contextual information. While estimating the exact gaze direction is difficult in the car environment, a coarse estimation of the visual attention can be obtained by tracking the position and orientation of the head. Since the relation between head pose and gaze direction is not one-to-one, this paper proposes a formulation based on probabilistic models to create salient regions describing the visual attention of the driver. The area of the predicted region is small when the model has high confidence on the prediction, which is directly learned from the data. We use Gaussian process regression (GPR) to implement the framework, comparing the performance with different regression formulations such as linear regression and neural network based methods. We evaluate these frameworks by studying the tradeoff between spatial resolution and accuracy of the probability map using naturalistic recordings collected with the UTDrive platform. We observe that the GPR method produces the best result creating accurate predictions with localized salient regions. For example, the 95% confidence region is defined by an area that covers 3.77% region of a sphere surrounding the driver.Comment: 13 Pages, 12 figures, 2 table

    Macro-and Micro-Expressions Facial Datasets: A Survey

    Automatic facial expression recognition is essential for many potential applications. Thus, having a clear overview on existing datasets that have been investigated within the framework of face expression recognition is of paramount importance in designing and evaluating effective solutions, notably for neural networks-based training. In this survey, we provide a review of more than eighty facial expression datasets, while taking into account both macro-and micro-expressions. The proposed study is mostly focused on spontaneous and in-the-wild datasets, given the common trend in the research is that of considering contexts where expressions are shown in a spontaneous way and in a real context. We have also provided instances of potential applications of the investigated datasets, while putting into evidence their pros and cons. The proposed survey can help researchers to have a better understanding of the characteristics of the existing datasets, thus facilitating the choice of the data that best suits the particular context of their application

    Assessing user behaviour and acceptance in real-world automated driving: the L3Pilot project approach

    The L3Pilot project, funded by H2020, is conducting the first large-scale piloting of SAE Level 3 automated driving in Europe. The main aim of the project is to address a number of key questions in a step towards introducing automated vehicles on European roads. This paper discusses the approach taken by the L3Pilot project, to evaluate user behaviour in, and acceptance of, automated driving in real-world pilots. Although some technical challenges associated with the development and demonstration of such technologies are well-documented, current methodologies, such as those used to evaluate Field Operational Tests (FOTs), offer little guidance about assessing the impact of automated driving on users’ behaviour and acceptance. This paper outlines the methods used and developed for assessing user behaviour and acceptance within the project, summarises some of the methodological challenges involved in collecting data during an automated driving pilot, and discusses some approaches we have developed to solve these multifaceted challenges

    Surrogate safety measures and traffic conflict observations.

    The chapter primarily focuses on observing traffic conflicts (also known as near-accidents) as a site-based road safety analysis technique. Traffic conflicts are a type of surrogate safety measure. The term surrogate indicates that non-accident-based indicators are used to assess VRU safety instead ofthe more traditional approach focusing on accidents (see chapter 2). The theory underpinning surrogate safety measures is briefly described, followed by a discussion on the characteristics of the traffic conflict technique. Next, guidelines for conducting traffic conflict observations using trained human observers or video cameras are presented. Chapter 4 concludes with examples of the use of the traffic conflict technique in road safety studies focusing on VRUs

    The effect of electronic word of mouth communication on purchase intention moderate by trust: a case online consumer of Bahawalpur Pakistan

    The aim of this study is concerned with improving the previous research finding complete filling the research gaps and introducing the e-WOM on purchase intention and brand trust as a moderator between the e-WOM, and purchase intention an online user in Bahawalpur city Pakistan, therefore this study was a focus at linking the research gap of previous literature of past study based on individual awareness from the real-life experience. we collected data from the online user of the Bahawalpur Pakistan. In this study convenience sampling has been used to collect data and instruments of this study adopted from the previous study. The quantitative research methodology used to collect data, survey method was used to assemble data for this study, 300 questionnaire were distributed in Bahawalpur City due to the ease, reliability, and simplicity, effective recovery rate of 67% as a result 202 valid response was obtained for the effect of e-WOM on purchase intention and moderator analysis has been performed. Hypotheses of this research are analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on Partial Least Square (PLS). The result of this research is e-WOM significantly positive effect on purchase intention and moderator role of trust significantly affects the relationship between e-WOM, and purchase intention. The addition of brand trust in the model has contributed to the explanatory power, some studied was conduct on brand trust as a moderator and this study has contributed to the literature in this favor. significantly this study focused on current marketing research. Unlike past studies focused on western context, this study has extended the regional literature on e-WOM, and purchase intention to be intergrading in Bahawalpur Pakistan context. Lastly, future studies are recommended to examine the effect of trust in other countries allow for the comparison of the findings

    Mobility and Aging: Older Drivers’ Visual Searching, Lane Keeping and Coordination

    This thesis examined older drivers’ mobility and behaviour through comprehensive measurements of driver-vehicle-environment interaction and investigated the associations between driving behaviour and cognitive functions. Data were collected and analysed for 50 older drivers using eye tracking, GNSS tracking, and GIS. Results showed that poor selective attention, spatial ability and executive function in older drivers adversely affect lane keeping, visual search and coordination. Visual-motor coordination measure is sensitive and effective for driving assessment in older drivers
