    Optimization of Electric-Vehicle Charging: scheduling and planning problems

    The progressive shift from traditional vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EVs ) is considered one of the key measures to achieve the objective of a significant reduction in the emission of pollutants, especially in urban areas. EVs will be widely used in a not-so-futuristic vision, and new technologies will be present for charging stations, batteries, and vehicles. The number of EVs and Charging Stations (CSs) is increased in the last years, but, unfortunately, wide usage of EVs may cause technical problems to the electrical grid (i.e., instability due to intermittent distributed loads), inefficiencies in the charging process (i.e., lower power capacity and longer recharging times), long queues and bad use of CSs. Moreover, it is necessary to plan the CSs installation over the territory, the schedule of vehicles, and the optimal use of CSs. This thesis focuses on applying optimization methods and approaches to energy systems in which EVs are present, with specific reference to planning and scheduling decision problems. In particular, in smart grids, energy production, and storage systems are usually scheduled by an Energy Management System (EMS) to minimize costs, power losses, and CO2 emissions while satisfying energy demands. When CSs are connected to a smart grid, EVs served by CSs represent an additional load to the power system to be satisfied, and an additional storage system in the case of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology is enabled. However, the load generated by EVs is deferrable. It can be thought of as a process in which machines (CSs) serve customers/products (EVs) based on release time, due date, deadline, and energy request, as happens in manufacturing systems. In this thesis, first, attention is focused on defining a discrete-time optimization problem in which fossil fuel production plants, storage systems, and renewables are considered to satisfy the grid's electrical load. The discrete-time formalization can use forecasting for renewables and loads without data elaboration. On the other side, many decision variables are present, making the optimization problem hard to solve through commercial optimization tools. For this reason, an alternative method for the optimal schedule of EVs characterized by a discrete event formalization is presented. This new approach can diminish the number of variables by considering the time intervals as variables themselves. Of course, the solution's optimality is not guaranteed since some assumptions are necessary. Moreover, the last chapter proposes a novel approach for the optimal location and line assignment for electric bus charging stations. In particular, the model provides the siting and sizing of some CSs to maintain a minimum service frequency over public transportation lines

    Methods for Optimal Microgrid Management

    Abstract During the last years, the number of distributed generators has grown significantly and it is expected to become higher in the future. Several new technologies are being de-veloped for this type of generation (including microturbines, photovoltaic plants, wind turbines and electrical storage systems) and have to be integrated in the electrical grid. In this framework, active loads (i.e., shiftable demands like electrical vehicles, intelligent buildings, etc.) and storage systems are crucial to make more flexible and smart the dis-tribution system. This thesis deals with the development and application of system engi-neering methods to solve real-world problems within the specific framework of microgrid control and management. The typical kind of problems that is considered when dealing with the manage-ment and control of Microgrids is generally related to optimal scheduling of the flows of energy among the various components in the systems, within a limited area. The general objective is to schedule the energy consumptions to maximize the expected system utility under energy consumption and energy generation constraints. Three different issues related to microgrid management will be considered in detail in this thesis: 1. The problem of Nowcasting and Forecasting of the photovoltaic power production (PV). This problem has been approached by means of several data-driven techniques. 2. The integration of stations to charge electric vehicles in the smart grids. The impact of this integration on the grid processes and on the demand satisfaction costs have been analysed. In particular, two different models have been developed for the optimal integration of microgrids with renewable sources, smart buildings, and the electrical vehicles (EVs), taking into account two different technologies. The first model is based on a discrete-time representation of the dynamics of the system, whereas the second one adopts a discrete-event representation. 3. The problem of the energy optimization for a set of interconnencted buildings. In ths connection, an architecture, structured as a two-level control scheme has been developed. More precisely, an upper decision maker solves an optimization problem to minimize its own costs and power losses, and provides references (as 3 regars the power flows) to local controllers, associated to buildings. Then, lower level (local) controllers, on the basis of a more detailed representation of each specific subsystem (the building associated to the controller), have the objective of managing local storage systems and devices in order to follow the reference values (provided by the upper level), to contain costs, and to achieve comfort requirements

    DClEVerNet: Deep Combinatorial Learning for Efficient EV Charging Scheduling in Large-scale Networked Facilities

    With the electrification of transportation, the rising uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) might stress distribution networks significantly, leaving their performance degraded and stability jeopardized. To accommodate these new loads cost-effectively, modern power grids require coordinated or ``smart'' charging strategies capable of optimizing EV charging scheduling in a scalable and efficient fashion. With this in view, the present work focuses on reservation management programs for large-scale, networked EV charging stations. We formulate a time-coupled binary optimization problem that maximizes EV users' total welfare gain while accounting for the network's available power capacity and stations' occupancy limits. To tackle the problem at scale while retaining high solution quality, a data-driven optimization framework combining techniques from the fields of Deep Learning and Approximation Algorithms is introduced. The framework's key ingredient is a novel input-output processing scheme for neural networks that allows direct extrapolation to problem sizes substantially larger than those included in the training set. Extensive numerical simulations based on synthetic and real-world data traces verify the effectiveness and superiority of the presented approach over two representative scheduling algorithms. Lastly, we round up the contributions by listing several immediate extensions to the proposed framework and outlining the prospects for further exploration

    Reinforcement learning for power scheduling in a grid-tied pv-battery electric vehicles charging station

    Grid-tied renewable energy sources (RES) based electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are an example of a distributed generator behind the meter system (DGBMS) which characterizes most modern power infrastructure. To perform power scheduling in such a DGBMS, stochastic variables such as load profile of the charging station, output profile of the RES and tariff profile of the utility must be considered at every decision step. The stochasticity in this kind of optimization environment makes power scheduling a challenging task that deserves substantial research attention. This dissertation investigates the application of reinforcement learning (RL) techniques in solving the power scheduling problem in a grid-tied PV-powered EV charging station with the incorporation of a battery energy storage system. RL is a reward-motivated optimization technique that was derived from the way animals learn to optimize their behavior in a new environment. Unlike other optimization methods such as numerical and soft computing techniques, RL does not require an accurate model of the optimization environment in order to arrive at an optimal solution. This study developed and evaluated the feasibility of two RL algorithms, namely, an asynchronous Q-learning algorithm and an advantage actor-critic (A2C) algorithm, in performing power scheduling in the EV charging station under static conditions. To assess the performances of the proposed algorithms, the conventional Q-learning and actor-critic algorithm were implemented to compare their global cost convergence and their learning characteristics. First, the power scheduling problem was expressed as a sequential decision-making process. Then an asynchronous Q-learning algorithm was developed to solve it. Further, an advantage actor-critic (A2C) algorithm was developed and was used to solve the power scheduling problem. The two algorithms were tested using a 24-hour load, generation and utility grid tariff profiles under static optimization conditions. The performance of the asynchronous Q-learning algorithm was compared with that of the conventional Q-learning method in terms of the global cost, stability and scalability. Likewise, the A2C was compared with the conventional actor-critic method in terms of stability, scalability and convergence. Simulation results showed that both the developed algorithms (asynchronous Q-learning algorithm and A2C) converged to lower global costs and displayed more stable learning characteristics than their conventional counterparts. This research established that proper restriction of the action-space of a Q-learning algorithm improves its stability and convergence. It was also observed that such a restriction may come with compromise of computational speed and scalability. Of the four algorithms analyzed, the A2C was found to produce a power schedule with the lowest global cost and the best usage of the battery energy storage system

    Optimal electric vehicle scheduling : A co-optimized system and customer perspective

    Electric vehicles provide a two pronged solution to the problems faced by the electricity and transportation sectors. They provide a green, highly efficient alternative to the internal combustion engine vehicles, thus reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Secondly, they bear the potential of supporting the grid as energy storage devices while incentivizing the customers through their participation in energy markets. Despite these advantages, widespread adoption of electric vehicles faces socio-technical and economic bottleneck. This dissertation seeks to provide solutions that balance system and customer objectives under present technological capabilities. The research uses electric vehicles as controllable loads and resources. The idea is to provide the customers with required tools to make an informed decision while considering the system conditions. First, a genetic algorithm based optimal charging strategy to reduce the impact of aggregated electric vehicle load has been presented. A Monte Carlo based solution strategy studies change in the solution under different objective functions. This day-ahead scheduling is then extended to real-time coordination using a moving-horizon approach. Further, battery degradation costs have been explored with vehicle-to-grid implementations, thus accounting for customer net-revenue and vehicle utility for grid support. A Pareto front, thus obtained, provides the nexus between customer and system desired operating points. Finally, we propose a transactive business model for a smart airport parking facility. This model identifies various revenue streams and satisfaction indices that benefit the parking lot owner and the customer, thus adding value to the electric vehicle --Abstract, page iv

    On the interaction between Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand systems and the power network: models and coordination algorithms

    We study the interaction between a fleet of electric, self-driving vehicles servicing on-demand transportation requests (referred to as Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand, or AMoD, system) and the electric power network. We propose a model that captures the coupling between the two systems stemming from the vehicles' charging requirements and captures time-varying customer demand and power generation costs, road congestion, battery depreciation, and power transmission and distribution constraints. We then leverage the model to jointly optimize the operation of both systems. We devise an algorithmic procedure to losslessly reduce the problem size by bundling customer requests, allowing it to be efficiently solved by off-the-shelf linear programming solvers. Next, we show that the socially optimal solution to the joint problem can be enforced as a general equilibrium, and we provide a dual decomposition algorithm that allows self-interested agents to compute the market clearing prices without sharing private information. We assess the performance of the mode by studying a hypothetical AMoD system in Dallas-Fort Worth and its impact on the Texas power network. Lack of coordination between the AMoD system and the power network can cause a 4.4% increase in the price of electricity in Dallas-Fort Worth; conversely, coordination between the AMoD system and the power network could reduce electricity expenditure compared to the case where no cars are present (despite the increased demand for electricity) and yield savings of up $147M/year. Finally, we provide a receding-horizon implementation and assess its performance with agent-based simulations. Collectively, the results of this paper provide a first-of-a-kind characterization of the interaction between electric-powered AMoD systems and the power network, and shed additional light on the economic and societal value of AMoD.Comment: Extended version of the paper presented at Robotics: Science and Systems XIV and accepted by TCNS.     Internet of Things-aided Smart Grid: Technologies, Architectures, Applications, Prototypes, and Future Research Directions

    Traditional power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids (SGs) to address the issues in existing power system due to uni-directional information flow, energy wastage, growing energy demand, reliability and security. SGs offer bi-directional energy flow between service providers and consumers, involving power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization systems. SGs employ various devices for the monitoring, analysis and control of the grid, deployed at power plants, distribution centers and in consumers' premises in a very large number. Hence, an SG requires connectivity, automation and the tracking of such devices. This is achieved with the help of Internet of Things (IoT). IoT helps SG systems to support various network functions throughout the generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy by incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators and smart meters), as well as by providing the connectivity, automation and tracking for such devices. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on IoT-aided SG systems, which includes the existing architectures, applications and prototypes of IoT-aided SG systems. This survey also highlights the open issues, challenges and future research directions for IoT-aided SG systems

    Komponentenbasierte dynamische Modellierung von Energiesystemen und Energiemanagement-Strategien fĂĽr ein intelligentes Stromnetz im Heimbereich

    The motivation of this work is to present an energy cost reduction concept in a home area power network (HAPN) with intelligent generation and flexible load demands. This study endeavors to address the energy management system (EMS) and layout-design challenges faced by HAPN through a systematic design approach. The growing demand for electricity has become a significant burden on traditional power networks, prompting power engineers to seek ways to improve their efficiency. One such solution is to integrate dispersed generation sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) and storage systems, with an appropriate control mechanism at the distribution level. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the installation of PV-Battery systems, due to their potential to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs. This research proposes an optimal economic power dispatch strategy using Model Predictive Control (MPC) to enhance the overall performance of HAPN. A hybrid AC/DC microgrid concept is proposed to address the control choices made by the appliance scheduling and hybrid switching approaches based on a linear programming optimization framework. The suggested optimization criteria improve consumer satisfaction, minimize grid disconnections, and lower overall energy costs by deploying inexpensive clean energy generation and control. Various examples from actual case study demonstrate the use of the established EMS and design methodology.Die Motivation dieser Arbeit besteht darin, ein Konzept zur Senkung der Energiekosten in einem Heimnetzwerk (HAPN) mit intelligenter Erzeugung und exiblen Lastanforderungen vorzustellen. Im Rahmen dieser Forschungsarbeit wird ein Entwurf für ein HAPN entwickelt, indem das Energiemanagementsystem (EMS) und der Entwurf des Layouts auf der Grundlage des Systemmodells und der betrieblichen Anforderungen gelöst werden. Die steigende Nachfrage nach Elektrizität ist für traditionelle Stromnetze kostspielig und infrastrukturintensiv. Daher konzentrieren sich Energietechniker darauf, die Effizienz der derzeitigen Netze zu erhöhen. Dies kann durch die Integration verteilter Erzeugungsanlagen (z. B. Photovoltaik (PV), Speicher) mit einem geeigneten Kontrollmechanismus für das Energiemanagement auf der Verteilungsseite erreicht werden. Darüber hinaus hat das Interesse an der Installation von PV-Batterie-basierten Systemen aufgrund der Reduzierung der CO2-Emissionen und der Senkung der Energiekosten erheblich zugenommen. Es wird eine optimale wirtschaftliche Strategie für den Energieeinsatz unter Verwendung einer modellprädiktiven Steuerung (MPC) entwickelt. Es wird zudem ein hybrides AC/DC-Microgrid-Konzept vorgeschlagen, um die Steuerungsentscheidungen, die von den Ansätzen der Geräteplanung und der hybriden Umschaltung getroffen werden, auf der Grundlage eines linearen Programmierungsoptimierungsrahmens zu berücksichtigen. Die vorgeschlagenen Optimierungskriterien verbessern die Zufriedenheit der Verbraucher, minimieren Netzabschaltungen und senken die Gesamtenergiekosten durch den Einsatz von kostengünstiger und sauberer Energieerzeugung. Verschiedene Beispiele aus einer Fallstudie demonstrieren den Einsatz des entwickelten EMS und der Entwurfsmethodik
