    Cross-factor analysis of software modeling practices versus practitioner demographics in the embedded software industry

    Software-intensive embedded systems have evolved to be essential tools of our lives. To cope with growing complexities in embedded software industry, software modeling and model-driven engineering (MDE) have become popular for design, development and testing of these systems. However, the usage of models in embedded software industry and the relevant practices usually vary since challenges, requirements and purposes differ among systems as well as among sectors. To understand the state-of-the-practice of software modeling in embedded systems industry, we designed and conducted a world-wide survey, which accepted 627 responses from 27 different countries. The goal of this paper is to present our work built on this survey to better understand and characterize the cross-factor analysis of software modeling versus practitioner demographics, e.g., degree of using software modeling versus target sectors of the products

    Compilation of Heterogeneous Models: Motivations and Challenges

    International audienceThe widespread use of model driven engineering in the development of software-intensive systems, including high-integrity embedded systems, gave rise to a "Tower of Babel" of modeling languages. System architects may use languages such as OMG SysML and MARTE, SAE AADL or EAST-ADL; control and command engineers tend to use graphical tools such as MathWorks Simulink/Stateflow or Esterel Technologies SCADE, or textual languages such as MathWorks Embedded Matlab; software engineers usually rely on OMG UML; and, of course, many in-house domain specific languages are equally used at any step of the development process. This heterogeneity of modeling formalisms raises several questions on the verification and code generation for systems described using heterogeneous models: How can we ensure consistency across multiple modeling views? How can we generate code, which is optimized with respect to multiple modeling views? How can we ensure model-level verification is consistent with the run-time behavior of the generated executable application?In this position paper we describe the motivations and challenges of analysis and code generation from heterogeneous models when intra-view consistency, optimization and safety are major concerns. We will then introduce Project P 2 and Hi-MoCo 3-respectively FUI and Eurostars-funded collaborative projects tackling the challenges above. This work continues and extends, in a wider context, the work carried out by the Gene-Auto 4 project [1], [2]. Hereby we will present the key elements of Project P and Hi-MoCo, in particular: (i) the philosophy for the identification of safe and minimal practical subsets of input modeling languages; (ii) the overall architecture of the toolsets, the supported analysis techniques and the target languages for code generation; and finally, (iii) the approach to cross-domain qualification for an open-source, community-driven toolset

    CESEC Chair – Training Embedded System Architects for the Critical Systems Domain

    Increasing complexity and interactions across scientific and tech- nological domains in the engineering of critical systems calls for new pedagogical approach. In this paper, we introduce the CESEC teaching chair. This chair aims at supporting new integrative ap- proach for the initial training of engineer and master curriculum to three engineering school in Toulouse: ISAE, INSA Toulouse and INP ENSEEIHT. It is supported by the EADS Corporate Foundation. In this paper, we highlight the rationale for this chair: need for sys- tem architect with strong foundations on technical domains appli- cable to the aerospace industry. We then introduce the ideal profile for this architect and the various pedagogical approaches imple- mented to reach this objective

    PRISE: An Integrated Platform for Research and Teaching of Critical Embedded Systems

    In this paper, we present PRISE, an integrated workbench for Research and Teaching of critical embedded systems at ISAE, the French Institute for Space and Aeronautics Engineering. PRISE is built around state-of-the-art technologies for the engineering of space and avionics systems used in Space and Avionics domain. It aims at demonstrating key aspects of critical, real-time, embedded systems used in the transport industry, but also validating new scientific contributions for the engineering of software functions. PRISE combines embedded and simulation platforms, and modeling tools. This platform is available for both research and teaching. Being built around widely used commercial and open source software; PRISE aims at being a reference platform for our teaching and research activities at ISAE

    Influential factors of aligning Spotify squads in mission-critical and offshore projects – a longitudinal embedded case study

    Changing the development process of an organization is one of the toughest and riskiest decisions. This is particularly true if the known experiences and practices of the new considered ways of working are relative and subject to contextual assumptions. Spotify engineering culture is deemed as a new agile software development method which increasingly attracts large-scale organizations. The method relies on several small cross-functional self-organized teams (i.e., squads). The squad autonomy is a key driver in Spotify method, where a squad decides what to do and how to do it. To enable effective squad autonomy, each squad shall be aligned with a mission, strategy, short-term goals and other squads. Since a little known about Spotify method, there is a need to answer the question of: How can organizations work out and maintain the alignment to enable loosely coupled and tightly aligned squads? In this paper, we identify factors to support the alignment that is actually performed in practice but have never been discussed before in terms of Spotify method. We also present Spotify Tailoring by highlighting the modified and newly introduced processes to the method. Our work is based on a longitudinal embedded case study which was conducted in a real-world large-scale offshore software intensive organization that maintains mission-critical systems. According to the confidentiality agreement by the organization in question, we are not allowed to reveal a detailed description of the features of the explored project

    Practitioner requirements for integrated Knowledge-Based Engineering in Product Lifecycle Management.

    The effective management of knowledge as capital is considered essential to the success of engineering product/service systems. As Knowledge Management (KM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) practice gain industrial adoption, the question of functional overlaps between both the approaches becomes evident. This article explores the interoperability between PLM and Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) as a strategy for engineering KM. The opinion of key KBE/PLM practitioners are systematically captured and analysed. A set of ranked business functionalities to be fulfiled by the KBE/PLM systems integration is elicited. The article provides insights for the researchers and the practitioners playing both the user and development roles on the future needs for knowledge systems based on PLM

    Safety-Critical Systems and Agile Development: A Mapping Study

    In the last decades, agile methods had a huge impact on how software is developed. In many cases, this has led to significant benefits, such as quality and speed of software deliveries to customers. However, safety-critical systems have widely been dismissed from benefiting from agile methods. Products that include safety critical aspects are therefore faced with a situation in which the development of safety-critical parts can significantly limit the potential speed-up through agile methods, for the full product, but also in the non-safety critical parts. For such products, the ability to develop safety-critical software in an agile way will generate a competitive advantage. In order to enable future research in this important area, we present in this paper a mapping of the current state of practice based on {a mixed method approach}. Starting from a workshop with experts from six large Swedish product development companies we develop a lens for our analysis.
