Telecommunications Network Planning and Maintenance
Telecommunications network operators are on a constant challenge to provide new services which require ubiquitous broadband access. In an attempt to do so, they are faced with many problems such as the network coverage or providing the guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). Network planning is a multi-objective optimization problem which involves clustering the area of interest by minimizing a cost function which includes relevant parameters, such as installation cost, distance between user and base station, supported traffic, quality of received signal, etc. On the other hand, service assurance deals with the disorders that occur in hardware or software of the managed network. This paper presents a large number of multicriteria techniques that have been developed to deal with different kinds of problems regarding network planning and service assurance. The state of the art presented will help the reader to develop a broader understanding of the problems in the domain

Optimized Design of Survivable MPLS over Optical Transport Networks. Optical Switching and Networking
In this paper we study different options for the survivability implementation
in MPLS over Optical Transport Networks in terms of network resource usage and
configuration cost. We investigate two approaches to the survivability
deployment: single layer and multilayer survivability and present various
methods for spare capacity allocation (SCA) to reroute disrupted traffic. The
comparative analysis shows the influence of the traffic granularity on the
survivability cost: for high bandwidth LSPs, close to the optical channel
capacity, the multilayer survivability outperforms the single layer one,
whereas for low bandwidth LSPs the single layer survivability is more
cost-efficient. For the multilayer survivability we demonstrate that by mapping
efficiently the spare capacity of the MPLS layer onto the resources of the
optical layer one can achieve up to 22% savings in the total configuration cost
and up to 37% in the optical layer cost. Further savings (up to 9 %) in the
wavelength use can be obtained with the integrated approach to network
configuration over the sequential one, however, at the increase in the
optimization problem complexity. These results are based on a cost model with
actual technology pricing and were obtained for networks targeted to a
nationwide coverage
Forecasting Recharging Demand to Integrate Electric Vehicle Fleets in Smart Grids
Electric vehicle fleets and smart grids are two growing technologies. These technologies
provided new possibilities to reduce pollution and increase energy efficiency.
In this sense, electric vehicles are used as mobile loads in the power grid. A distributed
charging prioritization methodology is proposed in this paper. The solution is based
on the concept of virtual power plants and the usage of evolutionary computation
algorithms. Additionally, the comparison of several evolutionary algorithms, genetic
algorithm, genetic algorithm with evolution control, particle swarm optimization, and
hybrid solution are shown in order to evaluate the proposed architecture. The proposed
