    Scheduling and Power Control for Wireless Multicast Systems via Deep Reinforcement Learning

    Multicasting in wireless systems is a natural way to exploit the redundancy in user requests in a Content Centric Network. Power control and optimal scheduling can significantly improve the wireless multicast network's performance under fading. However, the model based approaches for power control and scheduling studied earlier are not scalable to large state space or changing system dynamics. In this paper, we use deep reinforcement learning where we use function approximation of the Q-function via a deep neural network to obtain a power control policy that matches the optimal policy for a small network. We show that power control policy can be learnt for reasonably large systems via this approach. Further we use multi-timescale stochastic optimization to maintain the average power constraint. We demonstrate that a slight modification of the learning algorithm allows tracking of time varying system statistics. Finally, we extend the multi-timescale approach to simultaneously learn the optimal queueing strategy along with power control. We demonstrate scalability, tracking and cross layer optimization capabilities of our algorithms via simulations. The proposed multi-timescale approach can be used in general large state space dynamical systems with multiple objectives and constraints, and may be of independent interest.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1910.0530

    A Survey on Applications of Cache-Aided NOMA

    Contrary to orthogonal multiple-access (OMA), non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) schemes can serve a pool of users without exploiting the scarce frequency or time domain resources. This is useful in meeting the future network requirements (5G and beyond systems), such as, low latency, massive connectivity, users' fairness, and high spectral efficiency. On the other hand, content caching restricts duplicate data transmission by storing popular contents in advance at the network edge which reduces data traffic. In this survey, we focus on cache-aided NOMA-based wireless networks which can reap the benefits of both cache and NOMA; switching to NOMA from OMA enables cache-aided networks to push additional files to content servers in parallel and improve the cache hit probability. Beginning with fundamentals of the cache-aided NOMA technology, we summarize the performance goals of cache-aided NOMA systems, present the associated design challenges, and categorize the recent related literature based on their application verticals. Concomitant standardization activities and open research challenges are highlighted as well

    Reduced complexity multicast beamforming and group assignment schemes for multi-antenna coded caching

    Abstract. In spite of recent advancements in wireless communication technologies and data delivery networks, it is unlikely that the speeds supported by these networks will be able to keep up with the exponentially increasing demand caused by the widespread adoption of high-speed and large-data applications. One appealing idea proposed to address this issue is coded caching, which is an innovative data delivery technique that makes use of the network’s aggregate cache rather than the individual memory available to each user. This proposed idea of coded caching helps boost the data rates by distributing cache material throughout the network and delivering independent content to many users at a time. Despite the original theoretical promises for large caching gains, in reality, coded caching suffers from severe bottlenecks that dramatically limit these gains. Some of these bottlenecks are requiring complex successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver, exponential increase in subpacketization, applicability to a limited range of input parameters, and performance losses in low- and mid- signal to noise ratio (SNR) regimes. In this study, we present a novel coded caching scheme based on user grouping for cache-aided multi-input single-output (MISO) networks. One special property of this new scheme is its applicability to every set of input values for the user count (KK), transmitter-side antenna count (LL), and the global coded caching gain (tt). Moreover, for a fixed tt, this scheme can achieve theoretical sum-DoF optimality with no limitations. This strategy yields superior performance in terms of subpacketization when input parameters satisfy t+Lt+1N\frac{t+L}{t+1} \in \mathbb{N}. This performance boost is enabled by the underlying user grouping structure during data delivery. However, when input parameters do not comply with t+Lt+1\frac{t+L}{t+1} N\in \mathbb{N}, in order to guarantee symmetry of the scheme and optimal DoF, multicast and unicast messages need to be constructed using a tree diagram, resulting in excess subpacketization and transmission count. Nevertheless, the simple receiver structure without the SIC requirement not only simplifies the implementation complexity but also enables us to use state-of-the-art methods to readily design optimized transmit beamformers maximizing the achievable symmetric rate. Finally, we use numerical analysis to compare our new proposed scheme with well-known coded caching schemes in the literature

    Benefits of Cache Assignment on Degraded Broadcast Channels

    International audienceDegraded K-user broadcast channels (BCs) are studied when the receivers are facilitated with cache memories. Lower and upper bounds are derived on the capacity-memory tradeoff, i.e., on the largest rate of reliable communication over the BC as a function of the receivers' cache sizes, and the bounds are shown to match for interesting special cases. The lower bounds are achieved by two new coding schemes that benefit from nonuniform cache assignments. Lower and upper bounds are also established on the global capacity-memory tradeoff, i.e., on the largest capacity-memory tradeoff that can be attained by optimizing the receivers' cache sizes subject to a total cache memory budget. The bounds coincide when the total cache memory budget is sufficiently small or sufficiently large, where the thresholds depend on the BC statistics. For small cache memories, it is optimal to assign all the cache memory to the weakest receiver. In this regime, the global capacity-memory tradeoff grows by the total cache memory budget divided by the number of files in the system. In other words, a perfect global caching gain is achievable in this regime and the performance corresponds to a system where all the cache contents in the network are available to all receivers. For large cache memories, it is optimal to assign a positive cache memory to every receiver, such that the weaker receivers are assigned larger cache memories compared to the stronger receivers. In this regime, the growth rate of the global capacity-memory tradeoff is further divided by the number of users, which corresponds to a local caching gain. It is observed numerically that a uniform assignment of the total cache memory is suboptimal in all regimes, unless the BC is completely symmetric. For erasure BCs, this claim is proved analytically in the regime of small cache sizes

    Adaptive Video Streaming for Wireless Networks with Multiple Users and Helpers

    We consider the optimal design of a scheduling policy for adaptive video streaming in a wireless network formed by several users and helpers. A feature of such networks is that any user is typically in the range of multiple helpers. Hence, in order to cope with user-helper association, load balancing and inter-cell interference, an efficient streaming policy should allow the users to dynamically select the helper node to download from, and determine adaptively the video quality level of the download. In order to obtain a tractable formulation, we follow a "divide and conquer" approach: i) Assuming that each video packet (chunk) is delivered within its playback delay ("smooth streaming regime"), the problem is formulated as a network utility maximization (NUM), subject to queue stability, where the network utility function is a concave and componentwise non-decreasing function of the users' video quality measure. ii) We solve the NUM problem by using a Lyapunov Drift Plus Penalty approach, obtaining a scheme that naturally decomposes into two sub-policies referred to as "congestion control" (adaptive video quality and helper station selection) and "transmission scheduling" (dynamic allocation of the helper-user physical layer transmission rates).Our solution is provably optimal with respect to the proposed NUM problem, in a strong per-sample path sense. iii) Finally, we propose a method to adaptively estimate the maximum queuing delays, such that each user can calculate its pre-buffering and re-buffering time in order to cope with the fluctuations of the queuing delays. Through simulations, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm under realistic assumptions of a network with densely deployed helper nodes, and demonstrate the per-sample path optimality of the proposed solution by considering a non-stationary non-ergodic scenario with user mobility, VBR video coding.Comment: final version to appear in IEEE Transactions on Communication

    A White Paper on Broadband Connectivity in 6G

    Executive Summary This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting. Finally, the three levels of enablers must be utilized not only to deliver better broadband services in urban areas, but also to provide full-coverage broadband connectivity must be one of the key outcomes of 6G

    Quality of service aware data dissemination in vehicular Ad Hoc networks

    Des systèmes de transport intelligents (STI) seront éventuellement fournis dans un proche avenir pour la sécurité et le confort des personnes lors de leurs déplacements sur les routes. Les réseaux ad-hoc véhiculaires (VANETs) représentent l'élément clé des STI. Les VANETs sont formés par des véhicules qui communiquent entre eux et avec l'infrastructure. En effet, les véhicules pourront échanger des messages qui comprennent, par exemple, des informations sur la circulation routière, les situations d'urgence et les divertissements. En particulier, les messages d'urgence sont diffusés par des véhicules en cas d'urgence (p.ex. un accident de voiture); afin de permettre aux conducteurs de réagir à temps (p.ex., ralentir), les messages d'urgence doivent être diffusés de manière fiable dans un délai très court. Dans les VANETs, il existe plusieurs facteurs, tels que le canal à pertes, les terminaux cachés, les interférences et la bande passante limitée, qui compliquent énormément la satisfaction des exigences de fiabilité et de délai des messages d'urgence. Dans cette thèse, en guise de première contribution, nous proposons un schéma de diffusion efficace à plusieurs sauts, appelé Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), pour diffuser les messages d'urgence. DPS calcule les tailles de partitions dynamiques et le calendrier de transmission pour chaque partition; à l'intérieur de la zone arrière de l'expéditeur, les partitions sont calculées de sorte qu'en moyenne chaque partition contient au moins un seul véhicule; l'objectif est de s'assurer que seul un véhicule dans la partition la plus éloignée (de l'expéditeur) est utilisé pour diffuser le message, jusqu'au saut suivant; ceci donne lieu à un délai d'un saut plus court. DPS assure une diffusion rapide des messages d'urgence. En outre, un nouveau mécanisme d'établissement de liaison, qui utilise des tonalités occupées, est proposé pour résoudre le problème du problème de terminal caché. Dans les VANETs, la Multidiffusion, c'est-à-dire la transmission d'un message d'une source à un nombre limité de véhicules connus en tant que destinations, est très importante. Par rapport à la diffusion unique, avec Multidiffusion, la source peut simultanément prendre en charge plusieurs destinations, via une arborescence de multidiffusion, ce qui permet d'économiser de la bande passante et de réduire la congestion du réseau. Cependant, puisque les VANETs ont une topologie dynamique, le maintien de la connectivité de l'arbre de multidiffusion est un problème majeur. Comme deuxième contribution, nous proposons deux approches pour modéliser l'utilisation totale de bande passante d'une arborescence de multidiffusion: (i) la première approche considère le nombre de segments de route impliqués dans l'arbre de multidiffusion et (ii) la seconde approche considère le nombre d'intersections relais dans l'arbre de multidiffusion. Une heuristique est proposée pour chaque approche. Pour assurer la qualité de service de l'arbre de multidiffusion, des procédures efficaces sont proposées pour le suivi des destinations et la surveillance de la qualité de service des segments de route. Comme troisième contribution, nous étudions le problème de la congestion causée par le routage du trafic de données dans les VANETs. Nous proposons (1) une approche de routage basée sur l’infonuagique qui, contrairement aux approches existantes, prend en compte les chemins de routage existants qui relaient déjà les données dans les VANETs. Les nouvelles demandes de routage sont traitées de sorte qu'aucun segment de route ne soit surchargé par plusieurs chemins de routage croisés. Au lieu d'acheminer les données en utilisant des chemins de routage sur un nombre limité de segments de route, notre approche équilibre la charge des données en utilisant des chemins de routage sur l'ensemble des tronçons routiers urbains, dans le but d'empêcher, dans la mesure du possible, les congestions locales dans les VANETs; et (2) une approche basée sur le réseau défini par logiciel (SDN) pour surveiller la connectivité VANET en temps réel et les délais de transmission sur chaque segment de route. Les données de surveillance sont utilisées en entrée de l'approche de routage.Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will be eventually provided in the near future for both safety and comfort of people during their travel on the roads. Vehicular ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), represent the key component of ITS. VANETs consist of vehicles that communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. Indeed, vehicles will be able to exchange messages that include, for example, information about road traffic, emergency situations, and entertainment. Particularly, emergency messages are broadcasted by vehicles in case of an emergency (e.g., car accident); in order to allow drivers to react in time (e.g., slow down), emergency messages must be reliably disseminated with very short delay. In VANETs, there are several factors, such as lossy channel, hidden terminals, interferences and scarce bandwidth, which make satisfying reliability and delay requirements of emergency messages very challenging. In this thesis, as the first contribution, we propose a reliable time-efficient and multi-hop broadcasting scheme, called Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), to disseminate emergency messages. DPS computes dynamic partition sizes and the transmission schedule for each partition; inside the back area of the sender, the partitions are computed such that in average each partition contains at least a single vehicle; the objective is to ensure that only a vehicle in the farthest partition (from the sender) is used to disseminate the message, to next hop, resulting in shorter one hop delay. DPS ensures fast dissemination of emergency messages. Moreover, a new handshaking mechanism, that uses busy tones, is proposed to solve the problem of hidden terminal problem. In VANETs, Multicasting, i.e. delivering a message from a source to a limited known number of vehicles as destinations, is very important. Compared to Unicasting, with Multicasting, the source can simultaneously support multiple destinations, via a multicast tree, saving bandwidth and reducing overall communication congestion. However, since VANETs have a dynamic topology, maintaining the connectivity of the multicast tree is a major issue. As the second contribution, we propose two approaches to model total bandwidth usage of a multicast tree: (i) the first approach considers the number of road segments involved in the multicast tree and (ii) the second approach considers the number of relaying intersections involved in the multicast tree. A heuristic is proposed for each approach. To ensure QoS of the multicasting tree, efficient procedures are proposed for tracking destinations and monitoring QoS of road segments. As the third contribution, we study the problem of network congestion in routing data traffic in VANETs. We propose (1) a Cloud-based routing approach that, in opposition to existing approaches, takes into account existing routing paths which are already relaying data in VANETs. New routing requests are processed such that no road segment gets overloaded by multiple crossing routing paths. Instead of routing over a limited set of road segments, our approach balances the load of communication paths over the whole urban road segments, with the objective to prevent, whenever possible, local congestions in VANETs; and (2) a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based approach to monitor real-time VANETs connectivity and transmission delays on each road segment.
