    Video information retrieval using objects and ostensive relevance feedback

    In this paper, we present a brief overview of current approaches to video information retrieval (IR) and we highlight its limitations and drawbacks in terms of satisfying user needs. We then describe a method of incorporating object-based relevance feedback into video IR which we believe opens up new possibilities for helping users find information in video archives. Following this we describe our own work on shot retrieval from video archives which uses object detection, object-based relevance feedback and a variation of relevance feedback called ostensive RF which is particularly appropriate for this type of retrieval

    ImageSieve: Exploratory search of museum archives with named entity-based faceted browsing

    Over the last few years, faceted search emerged as an attractive alternative to the traditional "text box" search and has become one of the standard ways of interaction on many e-commerce sites. However, these applications of faceted search are limited to domains where the objects of interests have already been classified along several independent dimensions, such as price, year, or brand. While automatic approaches to generate faceted search interfaces were proposed, it is not yet clear to what extent the automatically-produced interfaces will be useful to real users, and whether their quality can match or surpass their manually-produced predecessors. The goal of this paper is to introduce an exploratory search interface called ImageSieve, which shares many features with traditional faceted browsing, but can function without the use of traditional faceted metadata. ImageSieve uses automatically extracted and classified named entities, which play important roles in many domains (such as news collections, image archives, etc.). We describe one specific application of ImageSieve for image search. Here, named entities extracted from the descriptions of the retrieved images are used to organize a faceted browsing interface, which then helps users to make sense of and further explore the retrieved images. The results of a user study of ImageSieve demonstrate that a faceted search system based on named entities can help users explore large collections and find relevant information more effectively

    Designing and deploying ubiquitous computing systems, such as those delivering large-scale mobile services, still requires large-scale investments in both development effort as well as infrastructure costs. Therefore, in order to develop the right system, the design process merits a thorough investigation of the wishes of the foreseen user base. Such investigations are studied in the area of requirements engineering (RE). In this report, we describe and compare three requirements engineering methods that belong to one specific form of RE, namely Goal-Oriented Requirements Engineering. By mapping these methods to a common framework, we assess their applicability in the field of ubiquitous computing systems

    Improving perceptual multimedia quality with an adaptable communication protocol

In this paper we argue that network parameters that define the network Quality of Service (QoS) must be driven by user-centric parameters such as user expectations and requirements for multimedia transmitted over a network. To this end a mechanism for mapping user-oriented parameters to network QoS parameters is outlined. The paper surveys existing methods for mapping user requirements to the network. An adaptable communication system is implemented to validate the mapping. The architecture adapts to varying network conditions caused by congestion so as to maintain user expectations and requirements. The paper also surveys research in the area of adaptable communications architectures and protocols. Our results show that such a user-biased approach to networking does bring tangible benefits to the user

    A model and architecture for situation determination

    Automatically determining the situation of an ad-hoc group of people and devices within a smart environment is a significant challenge in pervasive computing systems. Current approaches often rely on an environment expert to correlate the situations that occur with the available sensor data, while other machine learning based approaches require long training periods before the system can be used. Furthermore, situations are commonly recognised at a low-level of granularity, which limits the scope of situation-aware applications. This paper presents a novel approach to situation determination that attempts to overcome these issues by providing a reusable library of general situation specifications that can be easily extended to create new specific situations, and immediately deployed without the need of an environment expert. A proposed architecture of an accompanying situation determination middleware is provided, as well as an analysis of a prototype implementation

    Survivor Buddy and SciGirls: Affect, Outreach, and Questions

    This paper describes the Survivor Buddy human-robot interaction project and how it was used by four middle-school girls to illustrate the scientific process for an episode of “SciGirls”, a Public Broadcast System science reality show. Survivor Buddy is a four degree of freedom robot head, with the face being a MIMO 740 multi-media touch screen monitor. It is being used to explore consistency and trust in the use of robots as social mediums, where robots serve as intermediaries between dependents (e.g., trapped survivors) and the outside world (doctors, rescuers, family members). While the SciGirl experimentation was neither statistically significant nor rigorously controlled, the experience makes three contributions. It introduces the Survivor Buddy project and social medium role, it illustrates that human-robot interaction is an appealing way to make robotics more accessible to the general public, and raises interesting questions about the existence of a minimum set of degrees of freedom for sufficient expressiveness, the relative importance of voice versus non-verbal affect, and the range and intensity of robot motions

    Triggering trust:to what extent does the question influence the answer when evaluating the perceived importance of trust triggers?

    Trust is a critical component of business to consumer (B2C) e-Commerce success. In the absence of typical environmental cues that consumers use to assess vendor trustworthiness in the offline retail context, online consumers often rely on trust triggers embedded within e-Commerce websites to contribute to the establishment of sufficient trust to make an online purchase. This paper presents and discusses the results of a series of studies which took an initial look at the extent to which the context or manner in which trust triggers are evaluated may exert influence on the perceived importance attributed to individual triggers. We hope that our investigations will help inform the evaluation approaches adopted to assess consumer trust. © 2009 The Author

    An Empirical Analysis of Mobile Phone Users for Competitive Business Intelligence

    With the current globalization drive, most firms rely on Competitive Intelligence to help position them strategically through effective decision-making based on Customer Relationship Management {CRM}, marketing activities and competitors' vulnerability. It is of interest therefore to make decisions based on accurate inferences. Association rules have been widely used in data mining to find patterns in data that reveal combinations that occur at the same time which are called rules. The rules are sometimes too numerous to be used in decision making, hence, the interestingness of the rules are used to select the subset to act upon. This paper aims at evaluating the interestingness of rules gotten from applying association rule mining algorithm to data received from questionnaires of mobiles phone users in Nigeria. A patterr. is interesting if it is easily understood by humans, potentially useful and novel. The evaluation of the rule is done objectively using statistical independence and correlation analysis. This research has helped to reduce the uncertainty and inaccuracy of rules f~om which decisions are based towards the competitive advantage of an organization. Findings from the research revealed the areas of strength and weakness of mobile phone manufacturers and this understanding is used to provide competitive business decisions. which will in turn contribute to the profit of the organizatio
