Firms' transition towards green product service system innovators

    Get PDF
Within this paper we explore transition paths firms can take to become product service system (PSS) innovators. Applying the dynamic capability approach we study how three firms have developed PSS innovations in the mobility sector (Car2Go by Daimler AG, Connect by Hertz by The Hertz Corporation, Better Place). We explore the different paths the firms have taken originating from different capability sets. Based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with project managers of successful PSS innovations we propose a framework that incorporates three major transition paths. We derive propositions for necessary capability sets for different firm types, the sequence of necessary capability sets along the innovation process and discuss different types of environmental gains realized through PSS. --Innovation management, product service system, transition path, sustainability

    Human-Centric Process-Aware Information Systems (HC-PAIS)

Process-Aware Information Systems (PAIS) support organizations in managing and automating their processes. A full automation of processes is in particular industries, such as service-oriented markets, not practicable. The integration of humans in PAIS is necessary to manage and perform processes that require human capabilities, judgments and decisions. A challenge of interdisciplinary PAIS research is to provide concepts and solutions that support human integration in PAIS and human orientation of PAIS in a way that provably increase the PAIS users' satisfaction and motivation with working with the Human-Centric Process Aware Information System (HC-PAIS) and consequently influence users' performance of tasks. This work is an initial step of research that aims at providing a definition of Human-Centric Process Aware Information Systems (HC-PAIS) and future research challenges of HC-PAIS. Results of focus group research are presented.Comment: 8 page

An agile business process and practice meta-model

    Get PDF
Business Process Management (BPM) encompasses the discovery, modelling, monitoring, analysis and improvement of business processes. Limitations of traditional BPM approaches in addressing changes in business requirements have resulted in a number of agile BPM approaches that seek to accelerate the redesign of business process models. Meta-models are a key BPM feature that reduce the ambiguity of business process models. This paper describes a meta-model supporting the agile version of the Business Process and Practice Alignment Methodology (BPPAM) for business process improvement, which captures process information from actual work practices. The ability of the meta-model to achieve business process agility is discussed and compared with other agile meta-models, based on definitions of business process flexibility and agility found in the literature. It Operating Models In Practice And Research: An Analysis Of The State Of Knowledge

An IT operating model is a combination oforganizational structure and processes that comprehensively covers the IT department. It spans the whole IT lifecycle from IT strategy, architecture, demand and supply management, project management, infrastructure to support services such as accounting andHR. In essence, it is how the IT organization is set up to serve its users, the business. Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and IT executives are facing constant pressure to optimize their IT operating model to fit the ever changing business models of their users. The guidance information systems (IS) research provides on this issue is scarce. The IS literature contains little specific advice on how organizations should develop and adapt IT operating models. While the literature has extensive studies on components of IToperating models, such as enterprise architecture, research on IT operating models as a whole is surprisingly sparse. This paper analyzes the available academic and practitioner literature on IT operating models and identifies areas for future research. It specifically identifies research on internal alignment within an IT department ( inward alignment ) as an area of urgent need

Next Generation Outsourcing – A Research Agenda Guided By Practice

Over the last decades outsourcing has established itself as widely accepted management practice. Information systems researchers have spent considerable effort in studying the outsourcing phenomenon and theorizing about it. Through the interaction between research and practice, as well as through own experiences, industry managers underwent a noticeable learning curve. This poses the question: is research still up to date or do we need to think about the next stage, a form of next generation outsourcing? To investigate this issue, expert interviews with thirteen sourcing managers from different industries have been conducted. The aim was to learn about the state of outsourcing management in practice and to identify what the new topics are which keep outsourcing managers awake at night. The basis for the structured interviews was a thorough analysis of the outsourcing literature. Building on these the interviewees were asked to discuss their experiences and to highlight current issues of concern. We identified four emerging topics which call for further research: (1) Multi-vendor Outsourcing and Sourcing Networks, (2) Cloud Computing and its implications for outsourcing, (3) Risk Management of Outsourcing, and (4) Methods to bridge the Offshoring gap

Influences of decision under uncertain information on IT - management

To navigate an enterprise successfully in a global market means to recognise changes and risks correctly and to decide how to act and react. Agitation is only possible, when countermeasures have been undertaken before the risk emerges. This implies a target system, which besides the target variable provides a behaviour pattern also. On the basis of this behaviour the following basic questions can be postulated: How can we make decision making more secure with regards to the target system? What kind of IT - support is necessary in this respect? In this article we will show the importance of decisions based on uncertain data and their influences on IT - management and IT - platforms. First of all, we show the basic theories in dealing with turbulences and uncertainties. By presenting examples of two different branches, in medical health and in architecture we demonstrate a systematic solution for diminishing and even avoiding risks in the operational context of an enterpriseZarządzanie przedsiębiorstwem na rynku globalnym wymaga rozpoznania zmian i ryzyka. W artykule przedstawiamy znaczenie procesu podejmowania decyzji w oparciu o niepewne dane i ich wpływ na IT zarządzanie i IT platformę. Przede wszystkim przedstawiamy podstawowe teorie umożliwiające podejmowanie decyzji w turbulentnym i niepewnym otoczeniu. Na przykładzie dwóch równych obszarów, w służbie zdrowia i architekturze, proponujemy systematyczne rozwiązania dla zmniejszenia, a nawet unikania zagrożeń w kontekście działań operacyjnych przedsiębiorstw
