    Linking business analytics to decision making effectiveness: a path model analysis

    Get PDF
    While business analytics is being increasingly used to gain data-driven insights to support decision making, little research exists regarding the mechanism through which business analytics can be used to improve decision-making effectiveness (DME) at the organizational level. Drawing on the information processing view and contingency theory, this paper develops a research model linking business analytics to organizational DME. The research model is tested using structural equation modeling based on 740 responses collected from U.K. businesses. The key findings demonstrate that business analytics, through the mediation of a data-driven environment, positively influences information processing capability, which in turn has a positive effect on DME. The findings also demonstrate that the paths from business analytics to DME have no statistical differences between large and medium companies, but some differences between manufacturing and professional service industries. Our findings contribute to the business analytics literature by providing useful insights into business analytics applications and the facilitation of data-driven decision making. They also contribute to manager's knowledge and understanding by demonstrating how business analytics should be implemented to improve DM

    From business process modeling to data model : a systematic approach

    Business process modeling and management approaches are increasingly used and disclosed between organizations as a means of optimizing and streamlining the business activities. Among the various existing modeling languages, we stress the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), currently in version 2.0. BPMN is a widespread OMG standard that is actually used either in academia and in organizations. BPMN enables business process modeling, but does not facilitate the modeling of the information infrastructure involved in the process. However, interest in the data and its preservation has increased in BPMN’s most recent version. The aim of this paper is to study BPMN 2.0, particularly on the usage and persistence of data, and present an approach for obtaining an early data model from the business process modeling, which may then be used as a starting data model in the software development process

    Unified patterns to transform business rules into an event coordination mechanism.

    Business rules define and constrain various aspects of the business, such as vocabulary, behavior and organizational issues. Enforcing the rules of the business in information systems is however not straightforward, because different mechanisms exist for the (semi-)automatic transformation of various business constraints and rules. In this paper, we examine if and how business rules, not only data rules, but also process rules, timing rules, authorization rules, etc., can be expressed in SBVR and translated using patterns into a more uniform event mechanism, such that the event handling could provide an integrated enforcement of business rules of many kinds.Business rules; Event coordination; Business processes; SBVR; Declarative process modeling;

    Integrating Data Mining Into Business Intelligence

    Data Mining is a broad term often used to describe the process of using database technology, modeling techniques, statistical analysis, and machine learning to analyze large amounts of data in an automated fashion to discover hidden patterns and predictive information in the data. By building highly complex and sophisticated statistical and mathematical models, organizations can gain new insight into their activities. The purpose of this document is to provide users with a background of a few key data mining concepts and business intelligence and about benefits of integrating business intelligence and data mining.Business Intelligence, platform, data mining

    Managing Security Requirements: Towards Better Alignment Between Information Systems And Business

    Get PDF
    Information Systems are increasingly becoming essential to the success of business organizations. They play a central role in the success of almost all components of the organization such as business decision-making, business strategy formulation, business goal modeling, managing organizational resources, structure, managing organizational data etc. However, protecting information systems and organizational resources from security threats is a critical task in the management of the business, which alternately, negatively affects the alignment process between business and information systems. Managing information security within business organizations calls for a clear understanding of the viewpoint of business and the architecture of the system that is being used in the organization. This paper presents a requirements engineering based approach to modeling and maping the issue of information security at an early stage of the system’s development life cycle in the context of alignment between business and information systems

    OOREA: An Object-Oriented Resources, Events, Agents Model for Enterprise Systems Design

    A number of modeling approaches have been proposed in the literature for designing business information systems. This paper critiques prior data modeling approaches and presents an integrated object-oriented modeling approach that captures both the structural and the behavioral aspects of the business domain. Although there is considerable interest in object-oriented (OO) technologies in practice and in the information systems literature, there is no widely accepted OO modeling approach that facilitates the identification of objects from a business information processing perspective. Based on McCarthy’s (1982) resources, events, agents (REA) framework, the business process focused object-oriented ontology presented in this paper identifies the key resources, events, and agents in an enterprise information systems context. Termed OOREA, the ontology extends McCarthy’s REA model by capturing both the structural aspects of modeling, in terms of the objects of interest in the domain, and also the behavioral aspects in terms of the processes that modify objects. Application of the model is illustrated in the context of sales and related events for a retailing enterprise

    The use of information technology has revolutionized the traditional industries and services. Contained in the it systems of data has become an important part of the operations of many companies. When modeling and setting up business processes proved to be insufficient to consider information systems and data only as a resource: status of systems and data became correspond to the status of the process. Thus, modeling of business should include processes modeling, data modeling and analysis of software systemsИспользование информационных технологий коренным образом изменило традиционное производство и сферу услуг. Содержащиеся в ИТ-системах данные стали важной составной частью операций многих предприятий. При моделировании и настройке бизнес-процессов оказалось недостаточным рассматривать информационные системы и данные только как ресурс: статус систем и данных стал соответствовать статусу процесса. Таким образом, моделирование бизнеса должно включать моделирование процессов, моделирование данных и анализ ИТ-систе

    Enhancing workflow-nets with data for trace completion

    The growing adoption of IT-systems for modeling and executing (business) processes or services has thrust the scientific investigation towards techniques and tools which support more complex forms of process analysis. Many of them, such as conformance checking, process alignment, mining and enhancement, rely on complete observation of past (tracked and logged) executions. In many real cases, however, the lack of human or IT-support on all the steps of process execution, as well as information hiding and abstraction of model and data, result in incomplete log information of both data and activities. This paper tackles the issue of automatically repairing traces with missing information by notably considering not only activities but also data manipulated by them. Our technique recasts such a problem in a reachability problem and provides an encoding in an action language which allows to virtually use any state-of-the-art planning to return solutions

    The article is devoted to the solution of actual problems of innovative development of information and analytical provision of managing an enterprise according to the newest technology. A number of recommendations concerning technological upgrading foundation of modernization of information and analytic provision of managing an enterprise are elaborated. Technological approach to the modeling of information provision of business management is substantiated. Actualizing information and analytic provision of managing an enterprise has been carried out in developed flexible information system that is organized as internal network structure. Technological foundation of information and analytical process enterprise to modernize has been considered based on the modern tools of information and communication decisions. Information and analytical provision of managing have been developed through internal and external parallels of impact, which interconnection coordinates theory, methodology and organization of information processes with actualization of its model.
