    A Big Data Analytics Method for Tourist Behaviour Analysis

Few studies on big data analytics, however, have demonstrated the support for strategic decision-making. Moreover, a formal method for analysing social media-generated big data for decision support is yet to be developed, particularly in the tourism sector. Using a design science research approach, this study aims to design and evaluate a ‘big data analytics’ method to support strategic decision-making in tourism destination management. Using geotagged photos uploaded by tourists to the photo-sharing social media site, Flickr, the applicability of the method in assisting destination management organisations to analyse and predict tourist behavioural patterns at specific destinations is shown, using Melbourne, Australia, as a representative case. Utility was confirmed using both another destination and directly with stakeholder audiences. The developed artefact demonstrates a method for analysing unstructured big data to enhance strategic decision making within a real problem domain. The proposed method is generic, and its applicability to other big data streams is discussed

    Development of Context-Aware Recommenders of Sequences of Touristic Activities

    En els últims anys, els sistemes de recomanació s'han fet omnipresents a la xarxa. Molts serveis web, inclosa la transmissió de pel·lícules, la cerca web i el comerç electrònic, utilitzen sistemes de recomanació per facilitar la presa de decisions. El turisme és una indústria molt representada a la xarxa. Hi ha diversos serveis web (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) que es beneficien de la integració de sistemes recomanadors per ajudar els turistes a explorar destinacions turístiques. Això ha augmentat la investigació centrada en la millora dels recomanadors turístics per resoldre els principals problemes als quals s'enfronten. Aquesta tesi proposa nous algorismes per a sistemes recomanadors turístics que aprenen les preferències dels turistes a partir dels seus missatges a les xarxes socials per suggerir una seqüència d'activitats turístiques que s'ajustin a diversos contextes i incloguin activitats afins. Per aconseguir-ho, proposem mètodes per identificar els turistes a partir de les seves publicacions a Twitter, identificant les activitats experimentades en aquestes publicacions i perfilant turistes similars en funció dels seus interessos, informació contextual i períodes d'activitat. Aleshores, els perfils d'usuari es combinen amb un algorisme de mineria de regles d'associació per capturar relacions implícites entre els punts d'interès de cada perfil. Finalment, es fa un rànquing de regles i un procés de selecció d'un conjunt d'activitats recomanables. Es va avaluar la precisió de les recomanacions i l'efecte del perfil d'usuari. A més, ordenem el conjunt d'activitats mitjançant un algorisme multi-objectiu per enriquir l'experiència turística. També realitzem una segona fase d'anàlisi dels fluxos turístics a les destinacions que és beneficiós per a les organitzacions de gestió de destinacions, que volen entendre la mobilitat turística. En general, els mètodes i algorismes proposats en aquesta tesi es mostren útils en diversos aspectes dels sistemes de recomanació turística.En los últimos años, los sistemas de recomendación se han vuelto omnipresentes en la web. Muchos servicios web, incluida la transmisión de películas, la búsqueda en la web y el comercio electrónico, utilizan sistemas de recomendación para ayudar a la toma de decisiones. El turismo es una industria altament representada en la web. Hay varios servicios web (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) que se benefician de la inclusión de sistemas recomendadores para ayudar a los turistas a explorar destinos turísticos. Esto ha aumentado la investigación centrada en mejorar los recomendadores turísticos y resolver los principales problemas a los que se enfrentan. Esta tesis propone nuevos algoritmos para sistemas recomendadores turísticos que aprenden las preferencias de los turistas a partir de sus mensajes en redes sociales para sugerir una secuencia de actividades turísticas que se alinean con diversos contextos e incluyen actividades afines. Para lograr esto, proponemos métodos para identificar a los turistas a partir de sus publicaciones en Twitter, identificar las actividades experimentadas en estas publicaciones y perfilar turistas similares en función de sus intereses, contexto información y periodos de actividad. Luego, los perfiles de usuario se combinan con un algoritmo de minería de reglas de asociación para capturar relaciones entre los puntos de interés que aparecen en cada perfil. Finalmente, un proceso de clasificación de reglas y selección de actividades produce un conjunto de actividades recomendables. Se evaluó la precisión de las recomendaciones y el efecto de la elaboración de perfiles de usuario. Ordenamos además el conjunto de actividades utilizando un algoritmo multi-objetivo para enriquecer la experiencia turística. También llevamos a cabo un análisis de los flujos turísticos en los destinos, lo que es beneficioso para las organizaciones de gestión de destinos, que buscan entender la movilidad turística. En general, los métodos y algoritmos propuestos en esta tesis se muestran útiles en varios aspectos de los sistemas de recomendación turística.In recent years, recommender systems have become ubiquitous on the web. Many web services, including movie streaming, web search and e-commerce, use recommender systems to aid human decision-making. Tourism is one industry that is highly represented on the web. There are several web services (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) that benefit from integrating recommender systems to aid tourists in exploring tourism destinations. This has increased research focused on improving tourism recommender systems and solving the main issues they face. This thesis proposes new algorithms for tourism recommender systems that learn tourist preferences from their social media data to suggest a sequence of touristic activities that align with various contexts and include affine activities. To accomplish this, we propose methods for identifying tourists from their frequent Twitter posts, identifying the activities experienced in these posts, and profiling similar tourists based on their interests, contextual information, and activity periods. User profiles are then combined with an association rule mining algorithm for capturing implicit relationships between points of interest apparent in each profile. Finally, a rule ranking and activity selection process produces a set of recommendable activities. The recommendations were evaluated for accuracy and the effect of user profiling. We further order the set of activities using a multi-objective algorithm to enrich the tourist experience. We also carry out a second-stage analysis of tourist flows at destinations which is beneficial to destination management organisations seeking to understand tourist mobility. Overall, the methods and algorithms proposed in this thesis are shown to be useful in various aspects of tourism recommender systems

    Personality-based recommendation: human curiosity applied to recommendation systems using implicit information from social networks

    Tesis por compendioEn el día a día, las personas suelen confiar en recomendaciones, tradicionalmente aportadas por otras personas (familia, amigos, etc.) para sus decisiones más variadas. En el mundo digital esto no es diferente, dado que los sistemas de recomendación están presentes en todas partes y de modo transparente. El principal objetivo de estos sistemas es el de ayudar en el proceso de toma de decisiones, generando recomendaciones de su interés y basadas en sus gustos. Dichas recomendaciones van desde productos en sitios web de comercio electrónico, como libros o lugares a visitar, además de qué comer o cuánto tiempo uno debe caminar al día para tener una vida sana, con quién salir o a quién seguir en las redes sociales. Esta es un área en ascensión. Por un lado, tenemos cada vez más usuarios en internet cuya vida está digitalizada, dado que lo que se hace en el "mundo real" está representado en cierto modo en el "mundo digital". Por otro lado, sufrimos una sobrecarga de información, que puede mitigarse mediante el uso de un sistema de recomendación. Sin embargo, estos sistemas también enfrentan algunos problemas, como el problema del arranque en frío y su necesidad de ser cada vez más "humanos", "personalizados" y "precisos" para satisfacer las exigencias de usuarios y empresas. En este desafiante escenario, los sistemas de recomendación basados en la personalidad se están estudiando cada vez más, ya que son capaces de enfrentar esos problemas. Algunos proyectos recientes proponen el uso de la personalidad humana en los recomendadores, ya sea en su conjunto o individualmente por rasgos. Esta tesis está dedicada a este nuevo área de recomendación basada en la personalidad, centrándose en uno de sus rasgos más importantes, la curiosidad. Además, para explotar la información ya existente en internet, obtendremos de forma implícita información de las redes sociales. Por lo tanto, este trabajo tiene como objetivo proporcionar una mejor experiencia al usuario final a través de un nuevo enfoque que ofrece una alternativa a algunos de los retos identificados en los sistemas de recomendación basados en la personalidad. Entre estas mejoras, el uso de las redes sociales para alimentar los sistemas de recomendación reduce el problema del arranque en frío y, al mismo tiempo, proporciona datos valiosos para la predicción de la personalidad humana. Por otro lado, la curiosidad no ha sido utilizada por ninguno de los sistemas de recomendación estudiados; casi todos han usado la personalidad general de un individuo a través de los Cinco Grandes rasgos de la personalidad. Sin embargo, los estudios psicológicos confirman que la curiosidad es un rasgo relevante en el proceso de elegir un item, cuestión directamente relacionada con los sistemas de recomendación. En resumen, creemos que un sistema de recomendación que mida implícitamente la curiosidad y la utilice en el proceso de recomendar nuevos ítems, especialmente en el sector turístico, podría claramente mejorar la capacidad de estos sistemas en términos de precisión, serendipidad y novedad, permitiendo a los usuarios obtener niveles positivos de satisfacción con las recomendaciones. Esta tesis realiza un estudio exhaustivo del estado del arte, donde destacamos trabajos sobre sistemas de recomendación, la personalidad humana desde el punto de vista de la psicología tradicional y positiva y finalmente cómo se combinan ambos aspectos. Luego, desarrollamos una aplicación en línea capaz de extraer implícitamente información del perfil de usuario en una red social, generando predicciones de uno o más rasgos de su personalidad. Finalmente, desarrollamos el sistema CURUMIM, capaz de generar recomendaciones en línea con diferentes propiedades, combinando la curiosidad y algunas características sociodemográficas (como el nivel de educación) extraídas de Facebook. El sistema ha sido probado y evaluado en el contexto turístico por usuarios rEn el dia a dia, les persones solen confiar en recomanacions, tradicionalment aportades per altres persones (família, amics, etc.) per a les seues decisions més variades. No obstant això, aquests sistemes també enfronten alguns problemes, com el problema de l'arrencada en fred i la seua necessitat de ser cada vegada més "humans", "personalitzats" i "precisos" per a satisfer les exigències d'usuaris i empreses. En aquest desafiador escenari, els sistemes de recomanació basats en la personalitat s'estan estudiant cada vegada més, ja que són capaços d'enfrontar eixos problemes. Alguns projectes recents proposen l'ús de la personalitat humana en els recomendadors, ja siga en el seu conjunt o individualment per trets. Aquesta tesi està dedicada a aquest nou àrea de recomanació basada en la personalitat, centrant-se en un dels seus trets més importants, la curiositat. A més, per a explotar la informació ja existent en internet, obtindrem de forma implícita informació de les xarxes socials. Per tant, aquest treball té com a objectiu proporcionar una millor experiència a l'usuari final a través d'un nou enfocament que ofereix una alternativa a alguns dels reptes identificats en els sistemes de recomanació basats en la personalitat. Entre aquestes millores, l'ús de les xarxes socials per a alimentar els sistemes de recomanació redueix el problema de l'arrencada en fred i, al mateix temps, proporciona dades valuoses per a la predicció de la personalitat humana. D'altra banda, la curiositat no ha sigut utilitzada per cap dels sistemes de recomanació estudiats; quasi tots han usat la personalitat general d'un individu a través dels Cinc Grans trets de la personalitat. No obstant això, els estudis psicològics confirmen que la curiositat és un tret rellevant en el procés de triar un item, qüestió directament relacionada amb els sistemes de recomanació. En resum, creiem que un sistema de recomanació que mesure implícitament la curiositat i la utilitze en el procés de recomanar nous ítems, especialment en el sector turístic, podria clarament millorar la capacitat d'aquests sistemes en termes de precisió, sorpresa i novetat, permetent als usuaris obtindre nivells positius de satisfacció amb les recomanacions. Aquesta tesi realitza un estudi exhaustiu de l'estat de l'art, on destaquem treballs sobre sistemes de recomanació, la personalitat humana des del punt de vista de la psicologia tradicional i positiva i finalment com es combinen tots dos aspectes. In the digital world, this is not different, given that recommender systems are present everywhere in such a way that we no longer realize. The main goal of these systems is to assist users in the decision-making process, generating recommendations that are of their interest and based on their tastes. These recommendations range from products in e-commerce websites, like books to read or places to visit to what to eat or how long one should walk a day to have a healthy life, who to date or who one should follow on social networks. And this is an increasing area. On the one hand, we have more and more users on the internet whose life is somewhat digitized, given than what one does in the "real world" is represented in a certain way in the "digital world". On the other hand, we suffer from information overload, which can be mitigated by the use of recommendation systems. However, these systems also face some problems, such as the cold start problem and their need to be more and more "human", "personalised" and "precise" in order to meet the yearning of users and companies. In this challenging scenario, personality-based recommender systems are being increasingly studied, since they are able to face these problems. Some recent projects have proposed the use of the human personality in recommenders, whether as a whole or individually by facet in order to meet those demands. Therefore, this thesis is devoted to this new area of personality-based recommendation, focusing on one of its most important traits, the curiosity. Additionally, in order to exploit the information already present on the internet, we will implicitly obtain information from social networks. Thus, this work aims to build a better experience for the end user through a new approach that offers an option for some of the gaps identified in personality-based recommendation systems. Among these gap improvements, the use of social networks to feed the recommender systems soften the cold start problem and, at the same time, it provides valuable data for the prediction of the human personality. Another found gap is that the curiosity was not used by any of the studied recommender systems; almost all of them have used the overall personality of an individual through the Big Five personality traits. However, psychological studies confirm that the curiosity is a relevant trait in the process of choosing an item, which is directly related to recommendation systems. In summary, we believe that a recommendation system that implicitly measures the curiosity and uses it in the process of recommending new items, especially in the tourism sector, could clearly improve the capacity of these systems in terms of accuracy, serendipity and novelty, allowing users to obtain positive levels of satisfaction with the recommendations. This thesis begins with an exhaustive study of the state of the art, where we highlight works about recommender systems, the human personality from the point of view of traditional and positive psychology and how these aspects are combined. Then, we develop an online application capable of implicitly extracting information from the user profile in a social network, thus generating predictions of one or more personality traits. Finally, we develop the CURUMIM system, able to generate online recommendations with different properties, combining the curiosity and some sociodemographic characteristics (such as level of education) extracted from Facebook. The system is tested and assessed within the tourism context by real users. The results demonstrate its ability to generate novel and serendipitous recommendations, while maintaining a good level of accuracy, independently of the degree of curiosity of the users.Menk Dos Santos, A.     Towards Smarter Management of Overtourism in Historic Centres Through Visitor-Flow Monitoring

    Historic centres are highly regarded destinations for watching and even participating in diverse and unique forms of cultural expression. Cultural tourism, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), is an important and consolidated tourism sector and its strong growth is expected to continue over the coming years. Tourism, the much dreamt of redeemer for historic centres, also represents one of the main threats to heritage conservation: visitors can dynamize an economy, yet the rapid growth of tourism often has negative effects on both built heritage and the lives of local inhabitants. Knowledge of occupancy levels and flows of visiting tourists is key to the efficient management of tourism; the new technologies—the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and geographic information systems (GIS)—when combined in interconnected networks represent a qualitative leap forward, compared to traditional methods of estimating locations and flows. A methodology is described in this paper for the management of tourism flows that is designed to promote sustainable tourism in historic centres through intelligent support mechanisms. As part of the Smart Heritage City (SHCITY) project, a collection system for visitors is developed.     Recommendation engines make use of machine learning techniques and generally deal with ranking and rating of products/users. With the help of this system we aim to suggest different destinations to users based on their interest and previous visits. Along with recommendations we also aspire to enable users to build travel communities for people sharing similar interests .This shall help travelers with planning ,meeting like-minded people,safety and enthralling experience. As per the analysis done on pre-existing systems we discerned that enabling users to build a community of travelers visiting the same destination is an eccentric attribute proposed. This distinctive attribute of building communities shall be implemented using the basics of clustering algorithms in Machine learning

    A context aware recommender system for tourism with ambient intelligence

    Recommender system (RS) holds a significant place in the area of the tourism sector. The major factor of trip planning is selecting relevant Points of Interest (PoI) from tourism domain. The RS system supposed to collect information from user behaviors, personality, preferences and other contextual information. This work is mainly focused on user’s personality, preferences and analyzing user psychological traits. The work is intended to improve the user profile modeling, exposing relationship between user personality and PoI categories and find the solution in constraint satisfaction programming (CSP). It is proposed the architecture according to ambient intelligence perspective to allow the best possible tourist place to the end-user. The key development of this RS is representing the model in CSP and optimizing the problem. We implemented our system in Minizinc solver with domain restrictions represented by user preferences. The CSP allowed user preferences to guide the system toward finding the optimal solutions; RESUMO O sistema de recomendação (RS) detém um lugar significativo na área do sector do turismo. O principal fator do planeamento de viagens é selecionar pontos de interesse relevantes (PoI) do domínio do turismo. O sistema de recomendação (SR) deve recolher informações de comportamentos, personalidade, preferências e outras informações contextuais do utilizador. Este trabalho centra-se principalmente na personalidade, preferências do utilizador e na análise de traços fisiológicos do utilizador. O trabalho tem como objetivo melhorar a modelação do perfil do utilizador, expondo a relação entre a personalidade deste e as categorias dos POI, assim como encontrar uma solução com programação por restrições (CSP). Propõe-se a arquitetura de acordo com a perspetiva do ambiente inteligente para conseguir o melhor lugar turístico possível para o utilizador final. A principal contribuição deste SR é representar o modelo como CSP e tratá-lo como problema de otimização. Implementámos o nosso sistema com o solucionador em Minizinc com restrições de domínio representadas pelas preferências dos utilizadores.     Season-aware Attraction Recommendation Method with Dual-trust Enhancement

    Attraction recommendation plays an essential role in tourism. For example, it can relieve information overload for tourists and increase sales for tourism operators. When making travel decisions, tourists depend heavily on the personal preferences and suggestions from people they trust. However, most existing attraction recommendation methods focus on the tourist preferences for topics of attractions, yet overlook the seasonality in topic preferences. Additionally, extant studies are generally based on a single type of trust, which may represent trust relations inaccurately. In order to overcome these issues, we propose a novel season-aware attraction recommendation method based on the seasonal topic preferences and dual-trust relations. Firstly, we capture tourists’ seasonal topic preferences by analyzing their travel histories along two dimensions: time and attraction. Secondly, we develop a dual-trust relationship (DTR) model based on familiarity-based trust and similarity-based trust, in contrast to existing studies that purely focus on a single type of trust. Thirdly, we propose a novel season-aware attraction recommendation method named SAR-DTR. In a specific season, it predicts ratings based on both topic preferences in the given season and suggestions from tourists they trust. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method to other approaches, an empirical study with real-world data was conducted.     A Collaborative Location Based Travel Recommendation System through Enhanced Rating Prediction for the Group of Users

    Rapid growth of web and its applications has created a colossal importance for recommender systems. Being applied in various domains, recommender systems were designed to generate suggestions such as items or services based on user interests. Basically, recommender systems experience many issues which reflects dwindled effectiveness. Integrating powerful data management techniques to recommender systems can address such issues and the recommendations quality can be increased significantly. Recent research on recommender systems reveals an idea of utilizing social network data to enhance traditional recommender system with better prediction and improved accuracy. This paper expresses views on social network data based recommender systems by considering usage of various recommendation algorithms, functionalities of systems, different types of interfaces, filtering techniques, and artificial intelligence techniques. After examining the depths of objectives, methodologies, and data sources of the existing models, the paper helps anyone interested in the development of travel recommendation systems and facilitates future research direction. We have also proposed a location recommendation system based on social pertinent trust walker (SPTW) and compared the results with the existing baseline random walk models. Later, we have enhanced the SPTW model for group of users recommendations. The results obtained from the experiments have been presented
