Critical review of the e-loyalty literature: a purchase-centred framework
Over the last few years, the concept of online loyalty has been examined extensively in the literature, and it remains a topic of constant inquiry for both academics and marketing managers. The tremendous development of the Internet for both marketing and e-commerce settings, in conjunction with the growing desire of consumers to purchase online, has promoted two main outcomes: (a) increasing numbers of Business-to-Customer companies running businesses online and (b) the development of a variety of different e-loyalty research models. However, current research lacks a systematic review of the literature that provides a general conceptual framework on e-loyalty, which would help managers to understand their customers better, to take advantage of industry-related factors, and to improve their service quality. The present study is an attempt to critically synthesize results from multiple empirical studies on e-loyalty. Our findings illustrate that 62 instruments for measuring e-loyalty are currently in use, influenced predominantly by Zeithaml et al. (J Marketing. 1996;60(2):31-46) and Oliver (1997; Satisfaction: a behavioral perspective on the consumer. New York: McGraw Hill). Additionally, we propose a new general conceptual framework, which leads to antecedents dividing e-loyalty on the basis of the action of purchase into pre-purchase, during-purchase and after-purchase factors. To conclude, a number of managerial implementations are suggested in order to help marketing managers increase their customers’ e-loyalty by making crucial changes in each purchase stage
A comparative and exploratory study of motor oil branding in Nigeria and the UK
A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyThe importance of branding in the consumer market has been emphasised in many studies. In contrast, branding in the industrial markets is under researched. Even so, few researches on motor oil have been conducted. Motor oil is a good example of an important industrial brand due to its use in the production of other goods. Thus, by studying branded motor oil products in two distinct economies, Nigeria and the UK, the thesis aims to understand the nature and extent of branding industrial products, based on comparing and contrasting aspects of motor oil branding in the two contrasting economies. The choice of comparing the two economies is significant bearing in mind that global brands operate globally, hence the need for a more appropriate global strategic orientation.
The dearth of studies in this area supports the rational for the use of grounded theory as research strategy. To fill this gap, the study employed a multi methods research approach by employing the use of exploratory qualitative approach. The thesis utilised a longitudinal archival study to gain insight of motor oil branding. Participant observations in the supply chain of the two countries allowed gaining understanding of motor oil branding. Interviews and documents contributed to knowledge to allow triangulation of the findings. The findings suggest that a collection of branding strategies are done by focusing on inter firm relationships, purchase behaviour, effective distribution and various supporting services in the aftermarket. The thesis reveals motor oil functions between the consumer and the business markets with several branding strategies to attract awareness and differentiation.
Additionally, the thesis develops a model of the branding strategies of low involvement, branded motor oil products. The model shows various branding strategies through the middlemen to the two markets (i.e. garages (B2B) and retail (B2C)). This research contributes to the literature by identifying the branding behaviour of a hybrid brand from the supply chain perspectives, showing an inter link of branding in both markets. The research further extends understanding of market behaviour of low involvement, business brands. The study further contributes to literature by understanding the effect of foreign brands operating in developing economies like Nigeria. In practice, the findings offer improvement of branding strategy especially with global brands that cross borders to operate in different economies
Towards the Development of a Simulator for Investigating the Impact of People Management Practices on Retail Performance
Often models for understanding the impact of management practices on retail
performance are developed under the assumption of stability, equilibrium and
linearity, whereas retail operations are considered in reality to be dynamic,
non-linear and complex. Alternatively, discrete event and agent-based modelling
are approaches that allow the development of simulation models of heterogeneous
non-equilibrium systems for testing out different scenarios. When developing
simulation models one has to abstract and simplify from the real world, which
means that one has to try and capture the 'essence' of the system required for
developing a representation of the mechanisms that drive the progression in the
real system. Simulation models can be developed at different levels of
abstraction. To know the appropriate level of abstraction for a specific
application is often more of an art than a science. We have developed a retail
branch simulation model to investigate which level of model accuracy is
required for such a model to obtain meaningful results for practitioners.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables, Journal of Simulation 201
Pervasive computing at tableside : a wireless web-based ordering system
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce a wireless web-based ordering system called iMenu in the restaurant industry. Design/methodology/approach – By using wireless devices such as personal digital assistants and WebPads, this system realizes the paradigm of pervasive computing at tableside. Detailed system requirements, design, implementation and evaluation of iMenu are presented.Findings – The evaluation of iMenu shows it explicitly increases productivity of restaurant staff. It also has other desirable features such as integration, interoperation and scalability. Compared to traditional restaurant ordering process, by using this system customers get faster and better services, restaurant staff cooperate more efficiently with less working mistakes, and enterprise owners thus receive more business profits. Originality/value – While many researchers have explored using wireless web-based information systems in different industries, this paper presents a system that employs wireless multi-tiered web-based architecture to build pervasive computing systems. Instead of discussing theoretical issues on pervasive computing, we focus on practical issues of developing a real system, such as choosing of web-based architecture, design of input methods in small screens, and response time in wireless web-based systems.<br /
Strategies to Improve Business Performance with Information from Social Media
In the past 3 decades, China has experienced rapid economic growth. The China retail market reached renminbi (RMB) 29,651 billion in 2016, up by 10.4% from 2015. Using traditional ways that developed before the Internet era to acquire information regarding customers\u27 changing preferences for products and services in a fast-moving business world is insufficient to support management in the retail industry to make informed strategic decisions. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore successful customer-centric strategies that business leaders used to improve business performance with marketing information acquired from social media. The population comprised business leaders from 5 different companies in the retail industry in Southern China who have successful experience in improving business performance with the marketing information acquired from social media. The conceptual framework for this study was built upon the diffusion of innovations theory. The data were collected through semistructured interviews, social media sites, and analyzed using Yin\u27s 5-step data analysis process for case studies to identify themes. The findings revealed 3 emergent themes: knowledge strategies, persuasion and decision strategies, and implementation strategies. The findings from the study may contribute to positive social change when local employment opportunities can increase through increased employee spending in Southern China

Development Strategies for Privately Owned Fashion Boutiques
Abstract
Many privately owned brick-and-mortar fashion boutiques in the United States fail to succeed beyond the first 5 years of business. The knowledge of the factors responsible for the decline in the survival rate of traditional or brick-and-mortar fashion boutiques may be essential to these entrepreneurs’ survival. Grounded in the general systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies used by successful brick-and-mortar fashion boutique owners to negate the threat of online retailers. Data were collected through interviews with 5 brick-and-mortar fashion boutique owners, who operated businesses in the southeast region of the United States for more than 5 years, denoting success in fashion retailing. Secondary sources of data included secondoary data from the U. S. Small Business Administration, U. S. Census Bureau, and fashion industry reports. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Three themes emerged from the data analysis: the importance of marketing, fashion trends, and customer preference.. The outcomes of positive social change will expectedly result from the contribution to strategic knowledge generated from the study, in the formulation of innovative retail business strategies. The potential knowledge utilization of the study results may serve to increase the success rates of online fashion startups and positively influence improvement in the economic status and welfare of fashion business professionals in the community
Emotional antecedents of customer loyalty in the formal retail industry of South Africa
Text in English with abstracts in Zulu and AfrikaansDespite its substantial growth and contribution to the economy of the country, the
South African retail industry is faced with various challenges, including customers’
changing buying habits and expectations, the evolution of e-commerce, the entry of
giant retailers into the retail market, and the growing importance of the urbanised
middle class and its potential purchasing power.
This creates risks that are mostly beyond retailers’ control. Therefore, there is a
general drive among retail brands to build customer loyalty in order to respond to
these contemporary dynamics within the industry and, ultimately, enhance
sustainability. It is noted from literature that current understanding of customer
behaviour in the South African retail space is largely the result of rational behavioural
measurement, while the subconscious behaviour of customers is often neglected.
The study on which this thesis reports attempted to address this gap in the current
knowledge base. The current study makes a novel contribution to knowledge in
using complementary traditional and neuromarketing instruments in a sequential
mixed method research design to measure verbal, non-verbal and physiological
emotions, which indicate the key influential cognitive and emotive factors shaping
shopping decisions.
For a comprehensive understanding of customer behaviour, the study primarily
explored the emotional antecedents of customer loyalty in the formal retail industry of
South Africa. In order to explore and describe both retail brands and customers’
experiences regarding the drivers of retail brand loyalty, the empirical phase of the
study adopted a sequential mixed method research design. This design comprised
eight individual semi-structured interviews, which focused on and explored the
fundamentals of behavioural and attitudinal loyalty within the context of a customer
relationship management strategy.
x
Based on the findings emerging from the quantitative mall intercept survey with 300
retail customers, the study identified the motivating factors of greatest likelihood
among customers that best explain retail brand loyalty, namely product quality,
convenience of location, customer care, product variety and availability, as well as
fair pricing. Furthermore, findings emerging from the inferential analysis (structural
equation modelling, two-step cluster analysis, optimal scaling and multivariate binary
regression analysis) showed that brand trust, brand affect and attitudinal loyalty are
key predictors of behavioural loyalty. Additionally, customer loyalty differs depending
on customer predisposition towards the major retail brands tested. In this regard,
Pick n Pay, Massmart and Shoprite/Checkers recorded the most favourable
perceptions among customers.

As a complement to the quantitative research phase of the study, a Self-Assessment
Manikin attitude measure was applied to a sample of 120 customers. This phase of
the study highlighted pertinent emotional elements as key mediators in securing
sustainable retail brand loyalty. In this regard, Woolworths and Pick n Pay recorded
the most favourable perceptions on four stimuli, namely quality, customer rewards,
customer care and brand logos. The study also applied eye tracking and galvanic skin response techniques to a
sample of 10 participants to determine customers’ psychophysiological reaction to
the four stimuli. Galvanic skin response findings showed that customers were
especially engaged with Spar, Shoprite/Checkers and Pick n Pay, while eye tracking
findings showed customers’ higher visual engagement with Shoprite/Checkers, Pick
n Pay and Spar.
A key overall finding of this study was the significant role of feelings and emotions in
driving customer loyalty. Retail brands lose relevance when they fail to connect
emotionally with customers, and without that emotional attachment, brands can
easily be replaced by generic imposters. A comprehensive understanding of
customer behaviour remains a quandary for marketing and business practitioners. In
an attempt to address this limitation, the current study used insights from non-verbal
attitudinal and psychophysiological measures to obtain a more comprehensive
behavioural understanding of retail customers.Nakuba imboni yezitolo ezihwebayo yaseNingizimu Afrika ibonise ukukhula

Suid-Afrikaanse kleinhandelsbedryf met verskeie uitdagings te kampe. Veranderinge
is.
neurobemarkingsinstrumente in ʼn opeenvolgende gemengde metode as
ontleding (struktuurvergelykingmodellering, tweestaptrosontleding, optimale
skalering en meerveranderlike binêre regressieanalise) is merkvertroue, merkaffek
en houdingslojaliteit betroubare aanwysers van bedragslojaliteit. Afgesien hiervan
getoets is. Kliënte was vir vier stimuli (naamlik gehalte, kliëntbelonings, kliëntesorg
Business ManagementD. Com. (Business Management
Examination of Customers\u27 Intention to Adopt An Online Retailer: Brand Knowledge, Perceived Risk And Online Buyer Behavior
The paper first draws the attention about online retailing from technological standpoints to the marketing perspective. Then it develops a conceptual model based on brand theory, risk theory and information theory to understand consumers’ intention to adopt any online retailer as well as some associated online behavior, with brand knowledge as a cornerstone of online retail service marketing and perceived risk as the mediator transforming the impact. In research methodology part, the authors propose a hypothesized empirical study with precise logics and steps. More advanced analytical tool, structural equation modeling is applied to guide the analysis and interpretation of the results. It’s concluded by more discussions on the study itself and future directions
