New perspectives on Web search engine research
PurposeâThe purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the context of Web search and search engine-related research, as well as to introduce the reader to the sections and chapters of the book. Methodology/approachâWe review literature dealing with various aspects of search engines, with special emphasis on emerging areas of Web searching, search engine evaluation going beyond traditional methods, and new perspectives on Webs earching. FindingsâThe approaches to studying Web search engines are manifold. Given the importance of Web search engines for knowledge acquisition, research from different perspectives needs to be integrated into a more cohesive perspective. Researchlimitations/implicationsâThe chapter suggests a basis for research in the field and also introduces further research directions. Originality/valueofpaperâThe chapter gives a concise overview of the topics dealt with in the book and also shows directions for researchers interested in Web search engines
Constructing experimental indicators for Open Access documents
The ongoing paradigm change in the scholarly publication system ('science is
turning to e-science') makes it necessary to construct alternative evaluation
criteria/metrics which appropriately take into account the unique
characteristics of electronic publications and other research output in digital
formats. Today, major parts of scholarly Open Access (OA) publications and the
self-archiving area are not well covered in the traditional citation and
indexing databases. The growing share and importance of freely accessible
research output demands new approaches/metrics for measuring and for evaluating
of these new types of scientific publications. In this paper we propose a
simple quantitative method which establishes indicators by measuring the
access/download pattern of OA documents and other web entities of a single web
server. The experimental indicators (search engine, backlink and direct access
indicator) are constructed based on standard local web usage data. This new
type of web-based indicator is developed to model the specific demand for
better study/evaluation of the accessibility, visibility and interlinking of
open accessible documents. We conclude that e-science will need new stable

Being Omnipresent To Be Almighty: The Importance of The Global Web Evidence for Organizational Expert Finding
Modern expert nding algorithms are developed under the
assumption that all possible expertise evidence for a person
is concentrated in a company that currently employs the
person. The evidence that can be acquired outside of an
enterprise is traditionally unnoticed. At the same time, the
Web is full of personal information which is sufficiently detailed to judge about a person's skills and knowledge. In this work, we review various sources of expertise evidence out-side of an organization and experiment with rankings built on the data acquired from six dierent sources, accessible through APIs of two major web search engines. We show that these rankings and their combinations are often more realistic and of higher quality than rankings built on organizational data only
Measuring success of open source projects using web search engines
What makes an open source project successful?
In this paper we show that the traditional factors of success of open source projects, such as number of downloads, deployments or commits are sometimes inconvenient or even insufficient. We then correlate success of an open source project with its popularity on the Web. We show several ideas of how such popularity could be measured using Web search engines and provide experimental results from quantitative analysis of the proposed measures on representative large samples of open source projects from SourceForge
Evaluating the retrieval effectiveness of Web search engines using a representative query sample
Search engine retrieval effectiveness studies are usually small-scale, using
only limited query samples. Furthermore, queries are selected by the
researchers. We address these issues by taking a random representative sample
of 1,000 informational and 1,000 navigational queries from a major German
search engine and comparing Google's and Bing's results based on this sample.
Jurors were found through crowdsourcing, data was collected using specialised
software, the Relevance Assessment Tool (RAT). We found that while Google
outperforms Bing in both query types, the difference in the performance for
informational queries was rather low. However, for navigational queries, Google
found the correct answer in 95.3 per cent of cases whereas Bing only found the
correct answer 76.6 per cent of the time. We conclude that search engine
performance on navigational queries is of great importance, as users in this
case can clearly identify queries that have returned correct results. So,
performance on this query type may contribute to explaining user satisfaction
with search engines
Metrics for ranking ontologies
Representing knowledge using domain ontologies has shown to be a useful mechanism and format for managing and exchanging information. Due to the difficulty and cost of building ontologies, a number of ontology libraries and search engines are coming to existence to facilitate reusing such knowledge structures. The need for ontology ranking techniques is becoming crucial as the number of ontologies available for reuse is continuing to grow. In this paper we present AKTiveRank, a prototype system for ranking ontologies based on the analysis of their structures. We describe the metrics used in the ranking system and present an experiment on ranking ontologies returned by a popular search engine for an example query
