Bale Grazing: Feeding Hay the Rotational Grazing Way

    Get PDF
Imagine a hay feeding system where you did not have to use a tractor for months at a time and that allowed you to build up pasture fertility without applying commercial fertilizer. Would this be of interest to you? What if this same system also kept your cattle clean during the winter without coats caked in mud and manure, allowed you to creep graze fall‐born calves, and built up the organic matter levels in your pasture soils. Would you be even more interested? As far‐fetched as this may sound, all these benefits are possible with an innovative winter‐feeding technique called Bale Grazing

Teaching online (book excerpt from a work in progress)

The way we facilitate learning in higher education has undergone change. No longer are we constrained by time and space (Erisman & Steele, 2015). In their report, Erisman & Steele find institutions of higher education serving a much larger population of returning adult learners for whom advanced degrees and certifications can provide a difference in their working and personal lives. In the current online learning environments, we no longer have as much flexibility over the instructional strategies we want to use. Content and activities are built through the use of readings, videos, reference websites, mandated discussions, selfreflection activities and structured assignments. Faculty are hired to teach through establishing a feedback working relationship with students. In building this relationship, the nature of how you communicate and work together changes. What may have been effective in a face‐to‐face learning environment may not work online. This adds a new dimension to how faculty do their jobs. You may ask how educators bring the richness and expertise normally added to learning environments into an established course that we probably did not create. To facilitate learning effectively, adding new skills to our teaching toolbox helps us make the best use of online learning environments. This article represents an opportunity to take what might feel like a sterile learning environment and build on your own teaching skills to become a more effective educator. You are the one who will support student learning and provide students with a quality learning experience based on the working relationship you build with your learners. Online teaching may sound like a lot more work. It is not. You are working differently and hopefully after reading this article, working more effectively

Natural XML for Data Binding, Processing, and Persistence

The article explains what you need to do to incorporate XML directly into your computational science application. The exploration involves the use of a standard parser to automatically build object trees entirely from application-specific classes. This discussion very much focuses on object-oriented programming languages such as Java and Python, but it can work for non-object-oriented languages as well. The ideas in the article provide a glimpse into the Natural XML research project

Aspects of Humanism : An eight week course

Humanists have no official doctrine. Humanism is a loose family of views, united by the thought that the business of living is usually and on the whole worthwhile, and that belief in supernatural beings has nothing to offer people who are trying to live well. The thoughts gathered in these notes and lectures are not intended to supply a Humanist creed. Rather, they are an attempt to think through some of the issues that arise for Humanists today, and to present them in a way that will stimulate others to work out their own ideas. Inevitably, they reflect my own concerns and opinions. As the intention is to stimulate debate, I have in many cases left matters open. Where I offer a definite opinion, I do so in the expectation (and hope) that others will disagree with it, discuss it and improve on it. Please feel free to send me your comments at [email protected] Your course leader will organise your in-class activities and explain how your group will use these course materials. I want to make just one suggestion: bring a notebook and pen. Use it during meetings to record your thoughts about the topics under discussion and your reasons for holding (or changing) your views. If you can’t make up your mind about some question, try to write down precisely what is holding you up. That way, you will build up a private journal of your thoughts about Humanism, and make connections among the topics and between the course and your prior knowledge and experience. No-one will read it or try to make you read it aloud. There is no textbook for this course, but for each week, I have picked out a reading from a relevant book and these have been collected together in a Sourcebook accompanying this Handbook. I am grateful to Andrew Copson and the South Place Ethical Society, British Humanist Association and Rationalist Association for inviting me to prepare this course. I hope you enjoy working through it as much as I did. I am also grateful to the Humanist Philosophers’ Group for giving me plenty to think about. Graduates of the University of Hertfordshire philosophy programme will recognise some of the material here

If You Build It, Will They Come?

Faculty buy-in of an institutional repository can be an uphill battle. Even as IRs become more common and more popular, some faculty may still not understand what it is or how it can benefit them. Other faculty may understand the concept of an IR but might be frustrated by the thought of it being just another administrative task added to their ever-increasing to-do list. The need to educate faculty on why the repository is important and how it can support their pursuit of tenure and promotion goals remains a challenge for most IR administrators. Do you start with the faculty or the administration? Do you try to talk to faculty one-on-one or do you go to department meetings? Can you hold open sessions in the library or other central locations on campus? This poster will address these questions and will provide a framework that you can take back to your campus and use to build rapport with faculty.https://ir.una.edu/libfacpresentation/1033/thumbnail.jp

Ifyou are like me, then you are definitely eager to know what is inside this book and how it can be useful to you. Let me take this opportunity to tell you in just a few words, for whom I wrote this and what my objective was. book, 1.1 For whom this book waswritten Originally I wrote this book for mathematics teachers who want to explore new ways of teaching mathematics with a computer. However, when the first edition of this book came out into the daylight, I found that my readers were not only teachers, but also many students of various courses looking for new ways of solving mathematical problems. I was not surprised when I found that a number of mathematics courses in a few European universities had been built based on this book. In fact, I have made heavy use of large parts of my book for the Computing Foundations course at my own university. Teachers and university instructors can use this book as a starting point to any course where the computer can make a difference and then build the rest of the course around it

Security practitioners must be able to build cost-effective security programs while also complying with government regulations. Information Security Governance Simplified: From the Boardroom to the Keyboard lays out these regulations in simple terms and explains how to use control frameworks to build an air-tight information security (IS) program and governance structure. Defining the leadership skills required by IS officers, the book examines the pros and cons of different reporting structures and highlights the various control frameworks available. It details the functions of the security department and considers the control areas, including physical, network, application, business continuity/disaster recover, and identity management. Todd Fitzgerald explains how to establish a solid foundation for building your security program and shares time-tested insights about what works and what doesn’t when building an IS program. Highlighting security considerations for managerial, technical, and operational controls, it provides helpful tips for selling your program to management. It also includes tools to help you create a workable IS charter and your own IS policies. Based on proven experience rather than theory, the book gives you the tools and real-world insight needed to secure your information while ensuring compliance with government regulations

Great communication ignites a chain reaction. Discussion: Identify the best presenter of science that you have seen. What made that speaker so effective? To excel in your presentations, you will need content , passion, and a sharp sense of the audience. Science not communicated is science not done. Presenting your science powerfully requires mastery of three skills: Be Audience Centered, Filter and focus, Show your science Becoming an audience focused speaker is one of the most powerful skills you can adopt. Returning to points of common ground satisfies audiences of different technical backgrounds. Successful technical presentations require you to filter your details for your audience. Focus your content by considering first the most important message for your audience. To identify critical points for the talk, first consider the view you want the audience to have at the end. A good planning technique for filtering detail is to consider where you want your audience to end up and build the path from there. If audiences try to process too many words simultaneously, cognitive overload occurs. People learn much more deeply from words and relevant images than from words alone.
