    Compression through decomposition into browse and residual images

    Economical archival and retrieval of image data is becoming increasingly important considering the unprecedented data volumes expected from the Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments. For cost effective browsing the image data (possibly from remote site), and retrieving the original image data from the data archive, we suggest an integrated image browse and data archive system employing incremental transmission. We produce our browse image data with the JPEG/DCT lossy compression approach. Image residual data is then obtained by taking the pixel by pixel differences between the original data and the browse image data. We then code the residual data with a form of variable length coding called diagonal coding. In our experiments, the JPEG/DCT is used at different quality factors (Q) to generate the browse and residual data. The algorithm has been tested on band 4 of two Thematic mapper (TM) data sets. The best overall compression ratios (of about 1.7) were obtained when a quality factor of Q=50 was used to produce browse data at a compression ratio of 10 to 11. At this quality factor the browse image data has virtually no visible distortions for the images tested

    Autumn Foods of White-Tailed Deer in Arkansas

    Rumen contents from 65 hunter-harvested deer were collected and analyzed during 1985-86 to estimate the principal autumn foods consumed by white-tailed deer inhabiting the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas River Valley, and Gulf Coastal Plain regions of Arkansas. Deer in the Ozarks and Coastal Plain fed heavily on woody browse species, which comprised 99% of rumina identified from these 2 regions. Acorns were the primary food of deer in these heavily forested areas. Acorns and other woody browse were less important to deer inhabiting the Arkansas River Valley. In this region of interspersed agricultural fields and bottomland forests, soybeans and corn comprised 75% of the diet, and acorns accounted for only 2%

    From functional to cognitive grammar in stylistic analysis of Golding’s The Inheritors

    Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) is one of the most influential grammars used in stylistics, but more recently the discipline has witnessed a growing body of work using cognitive grammars to explain stylistic effects. This research has tended to make the positive case for cognitive grammar (CG) by demonstrating its similarity to functionalist approaches. However, it is also necessary to say how CG adds to an SFG account of literary effects. To do so, I return to Halliday’s seminal analysis of Golding’s novel, The Inheritors. I use CG to investigate the conceptual processes involved in the reader’s interpretation of the character’s deviant mindstyle and outline some of the ludic and dramatic effects of these reconstrual operations. Thus, whereas SFG focuses on describing the ideational structure of the representations proffered by texts, I argue that a unique affordance of CG is its focus on the readerly construction of meaning

    This demonstration presents a novel interactive online shopping application based on visual search technologies. When users want to buy something on a shopping site, they usually have the requirement of looking for related information from other web sites. Therefore users need to switch between the web page being browsed and other websites that provide search results. The proposed application enables users to naturally search products of interest when they browse a web page, and make their even causal purchase intent easily satisfied. The interactive shopping experience is characterized by: 1) in session - it allows users to specify the purchase intent in the browsing session, instead of leaving the current page and navigating to other websites; 2) in context - -the browsed web page provides implicit context information which helps infer user purchase preferences; 3) in focus - users easily specify their search interest using gesture on touch devices and do not need to formulate queries in search box; 4) natural-gesture inputs and visual-based search provides users a natural shopping experience. The system is evaluated against a data set consisting of several millions commercial product images. © 2012 Authors

Subjects’ perceived impacts of the Internet on self and others are analyzed, demonstrating a "third-person effect" in regards to the perceived dangers originating from the Internet.
