Simulation of Two-Way Pushdown Automata Revisited
The linear-time simulation of 2-way deterministic pushdown automata (2DPDA)
by the Cook and Jones constructions is revisited. Following the semantics-based
approach by Jones, an interpreter is given which, when extended with
random-access memory, performs a linear-time simulation of 2DPDA. The recursive
interpreter works without the dump list of the original constructions, which
makes Cook's insight into linear-time simulation of exponential-time automata
more intuitive and the complexity argument clearer. The simulation is then
extended to 2-way nondeterministic pushdown automata (2NPDA) to provide for a
cubic-time recognition of context-free languages. The time required to run the
final construction depends on the degree of nondeterminism. The key mechanism
that enables the polynomial-time simulations is the sharing of computations by

Reachability in Higher-Order-Counters
Higher-order counter automata (\HOCS) can be either seen as a restriction of
higher-order pushdown automata (\HOPS) to a unary stack alphabet, or as an
extension of counter automata to higher levels. We distinguish two principal
kinds of \HOCS: those that can test whether the topmost counter value is zero
and those which cannot.
We show that control-state reachability for level \HOCS with -test is
complete for \mbox{}-fold exponential space; leaving out the -test
leads to completeness for \mbox{}-fold exponential time. Restricting
\HOCS (without -test) to level , we prove that global (forward or
backward) reachability analysis is \PTIME-complete. This enhances the known
result for pushdown systems which are subsumed by level \HOCS without
-test.
We transfer our results to the formal language setting. Assuming that \PTIME
\subsetneq \PSPACE \subsetneq \mathbf{EXPTIME}, we apply proof ideas of
Engelfriet and conclude that the hierarchies of languages of \HOPS and of \HOCS
form strictly interleaving hierarchies. Interestingly, Engelfriet's
constructions also allow to conclude immediately that the hierarchy of
collapsible pushdown languages is strict level-by-level due to the existing
complexity results for reachability on collapsible pushdown graphs. This

Visibly Linear Dynamic Logic
We introduce Visibly Linear Dynamic Logic (VLDL), which extends Linear
Temporal Logic (LTL) by temporal operators that are guarded by visibly pushdown
languages over finite words. In VLDL one can, e.g., express that a function
resets a variable to its original value after its execution, even in the
presence of an unbounded number of intermediate recursive calls. We prove that
VLDL describes exactly the -visibly pushdown languages. Thus it is
strictly more expressive than LTL and able to express recursive properties of
programs with unbounded call stacks.
The main technical contribution of this work is a translation of VLDL into
-visibly pushdown automata of exponential size via one-way alternating
jumping automata. This translation yields exponential-time algorithms for
satisfiability, validity, and model checking. We also show that visibly
pushdown games with VLDL winning conditions are solvable in triply-exponential
time. We prove all these problems to be complete for their respective

Comparator automata in quantitative verification
The notion of comparison between system runs is fundamental in formal
verification. This concept is implicitly present in the verification of
qualitative systems, and is more pronounced in the verification of quantitative
systems. In this work, we identify a novel mode of comparison in quantitative
systems: the online comparison of the aggregate values of two sequences of
quantitative weights. This notion is embodied by {\em comparator automata}
({\em comparators}, in short), a new class of automata that read two infinite
sequences of weights synchronously and relate their aggregate values.
We show that {aggregate functions} that can be represented with B\"uchi
automaton result in comparators that are finite-state and accept by the B\"uchi
condition as well. Such {\em -regular comparators} further lead to
generic algorithms for a number of well-studied problems, including the
quantitative inclusion and winning strategies in quantitative graph games with
incomplete information, as well as related non-decision problems, such as
obtaining a finite representation of all counterexamples in the quantitative
inclusion problem.
We study comparators for two aggregate functions: discounted-sum and
limit-average. We prove that the discounted-sum comparator is -regular
iff the discount-factor is an integer. Not every aggregate function, however,
has an -regular comparator. Specifically, we show that the language of
sequence-pairs for which limit-average aggregates exist is neither
-regular nor -context-free. Given this result, we introduce the
notion of {\em prefix-average} as a relaxation of limit-average aggregation,
and show that it admits -context-free comparators
Unified Analysis of Collapsible and Ordered Pushdown Automata via Term Rewriting
We model collapsible and ordered pushdown systems with term rewriting, by
encoding higher-order stacks and multiple stacks into trees. We show a uniform
inverse preservation of recognizability result for the resulting class of term
rewriting systems, which is obtained by extending the classic saturation-based
approach. This result subsumes and unifies similar analyses on collapsible and
ordered pushdown systems. Despite the rich literature on inverse preservation
of recognizability for term rewrite systems, our result does not seem to follow
