Access and metro network convergence for flexible end-to-end network design
This paper reports on the architectural, protocol, physical layer, and integrated testbed demonstrations carried out by the DISCUS FP7 consortium in the area of access - metro network convergence. Our architecture modeling results show the vast potential for cost and power savings that node consolidation can bring. The architecture, however, also recognizes the limits of long-reach transmission for low-latency 5G services and proposes ways to address such shortcomings in future projects. The testbed results, which have been conducted end-to-end, across access - metro and core, and have targeted all the layers of the network from the application down to the physical layer, show the practical feasibility of the concepts proposed in the project
The ATLAS SCT grounding and shielding concept and implementation
This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. These will be detailed in a forthcoming paper

A Fast Compiler for NetKAT
High-level programming languages play a key role in a growing number of
networking platforms, streamlining application development and enabling precise
formal reasoning about network behavior. Unfortunately, current compilers only
handle "local" programs that specify behavior in terms of hop-by-hop forwarding
behavior, or modest extensions such as simple paths. To encode richer "global"
behaviors, programmers must add extra state -- something that is tricky to get
right and makes programs harder to write and maintain. Making matters worse,
existing compilers can take tens of minutes to generate the forwarding state
for the network, even on relatively small inputs. This forces programmers to
waste time working around performance issues or even revert to using
hardware-level APIs.
This paper presents a new compiler for the NetKAT language that handles rich
features including regular paths and virtual networks, and yet is several
orders of magnitude faster than previous compilers. The compiler uses symbolic
automata to calculate the extra state needed to implement "global" programs,
and an intermediate representation based on binary decision diagrams to
dramatically improve performance. We describe the design and implementation of
three essential compiler stages: from virtual programs (which specify behavior
in terms of virtual topologies) to global programs (which specify network-wide
behavior in terms of physical topologies), from global programs to local
programs (which specify behavior in terms of single-switch behavior), and from
local programs to hardware-level forwarding tables. We present results from
experiments on real-world benchmarks that quantify performance in terms of
compilation time and forwarding table size

Fully-photonic digital radio over fibre for future super-broadband access network applications
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityIn this thesis a Fully-Photonic DRoF (FP-DRoF) system is proposed for deploying of future super-broadband access networks. Digital Radio over Fibre (DRoF) is more independent of the fibre network impairments and the length of fibre than the ARoF link. In order for fully optical deployment of the signal conversion techniques in the FP-DRoF architecture, two key components an Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and a Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC)) for data conversion are designed and their performance are investigated whereas the physical functionality is evaluated. The system simulation results of the proposed pipelined Photonic ADC (PADC) show that the PADC has 10 GHz bandwidth around 60 GHz of sampling rate. Furthermore, by
changing the bandwidth of the optical bandpass filter, switching to another band of sampling frequency provides optimised performance condition of the PADC. The PADC has low changes on the Effective Number of Bit (ENOB) response versus analogue RF input from 1 GHz up to 22 GHz for 60 GHz sampling frequency. The proposed 8-Bit pipelined PADC performance in terms of ENOB is evaluated at 60 Gigasample/s which is about 4.1. Recently, different methods have been reported by researchers to implement Photonic DACs
(PDACs), but their aim was to convert digital electrical signals to the corresponding analogue signal by assisting the optical techniques. In this thesis, a Binary Weighted PDAC (BW-PDAC) is proposed. In this BW-PDAC, optical digital signals are fully optically converted to an analogue signal. The spurious free dynamic range at the output of the PDAC in a back-to-back deployment of the PADC and the PDAC was 26.6 dBc. For further improvement in the system performance, a 3R (Retiming, Reshaping and Reamplifying) regeneration system is proposed in this thesis. Simulation results show that for an ultrashort RZ pulse with a 5% duty cycle at 65 Gbit/s using the proposed 3R regeneration system on a link reduces rms timing jitter by 90% while the regenerated pulse eye opening height is improved by 65%. Finally, in this thesis the proposed FP-DRoF functionality is evaluated whereas its performance is investigated through a dedicated and shared fibre links. The simulation results show (in the case of low level signal to noise ratio, in comparison with ARoF through
a dedicated fibre link) that the FP-DRoF has better BER performance than the ARoF in the order of 10-20. Furthermore, in order to realize a BER about 10-25 for the ARoF, the power penalty is about 4 dBm higher than the FP-DRoF link. The simulation results demonstrate that by considering 0.2 dB/km attenuation of a standard single mode fibre, the dedicated fibre length for the FP-DRoF link can be increased to about 20 km more than the ARoF link. Moreover, for performance assessment of the proposed FP-DRoF in a shared fibre link, the BER of the FP-DRoF link is about 10-10 magnitude less than the ARoF link for -19 dBm launched power into the fibre and the power penalty of the ARoF system is 10 dBm more than the FP-DRoF link. It is significant to increase the fibre linkâs length of the FP-DRoF access network using common infrastructure. In addition, the simulation results are demonstrated that the FP-DRoF with non-uniform Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is more robust against four wave mixing impairment than the conventional WDM technique with uniform wavelength allocation and has better performance in terms of BER. It is clearly verified that the lunched power penalty at CS for DRoF link with uniform WDM techniques is about 2 dB higher than non-uniform WDM technique. Furthermore, uniform WDM method requires more bandwidth than non-uniform scheme which depends on the total number of channels and channels spacing
Communications for smart grid substation monitoring using WIMAX protocol
The SMARTGRID is a general term for a series of infrastructural changes applied to the
electric transmission and distribution systems. By using the latest communication and
computing technology, additional options such as Condition Monitoring can now be
implemented to further improve and optimise complex electricity supply grid operation.
Lifecycle optimisation of high voltage assets and other system components in the utility
provide a case in point. Today Utility experts agree that application of scheduled
maintenance is not the effective use of resources. To reduce maintenance expenses and
unnecessary outages and repairs of equipment due to scheduled maintenance, utilities are
adopting condition based approaches. Real time online monitoring of substation
parameters can be achieved by retrofitting the existing substation with SMARTGRID
technology. The IEC 61850 is a common protocol meant for Substation Automation
Systems, designed for the purpose of establishing interoperability, one that all
manufacturers of all different assets must comply with. This thesis advocates the estimation
of bandwidth required for monitoring a substation after retrofitting the existing substation
with smart communication technologies. This includes establishing a latest wireless
communication infrastructure from the substation to the control centre and evaluating the
performance modelling and simulating the physical layer of communication technologies
such as WIMAX (IEEE802.16) and MICROWAVE point to point using MATLAB
SIMULINK and RADIO mobile online simulation software. Also, link budget of the
satellite communication for the same application is calculated. Satellite communication in
this case is considered as a redundant or back up technology to ensure that the
communication between entities is continuous. On performing the simulation on different
environments the results prove that the selected protocols are best suited for condition
monitoring. The measured Latency could be the best approximated value which complies
with the current objective. However the white noise that exists in the substation has
significant hazard with respect to the security of the wireless network. To compensate this
constraint whole substation is hard wired by means of plastic fibre optics and the data sent
to the base station located near the substation
Quality of service aware data dissemination in vehicular Ad Hoc networks
Des systĂšmes de transport intelligents (STI) seront Ă©ventuellement fournis dans un proche avenir pour la sĂ©curitĂ© et le confort des personnes lors de leurs dĂ©placements sur les routes. Les rĂ©seaux ad-hoc vĂ©hiculaires (VANETs) reprĂ©sentent l'Ă©lĂ©ment clĂ© des STI. Les VANETs sont formĂ©s par des vĂ©hicules qui communiquent entre eux et avec l'infrastructure. En effet, les vĂ©hicules pourront Ă©changer des messages qui comprennent, par exemple, des informations sur la circulation routiĂšre, les situations d'urgence et les divertissements. En particulier, les messages d'urgence sont diffusĂ©s par des vĂ©hicules en cas d'urgence (p.ex. un accident de voiture); afin de permettre aux conducteurs de rĂ©agir Ă temps (p.ex., ralentir), les messages d'urgence doivent ĂȘtre diffusĂ©s de maniĂšre fiable dans un dĂ©lai trĂšs court. Dans les VANETs, il existe plusieurs facteurs, tels que le canal Ă pertes, les terminaux cachĂ©s, les interfĂ©rences et la bande passante limitĂ©e, qui compliquent Ă©normĂ©ment la satisfaction des exigences de fiabilitĂ© et de dĂ©lai des messages d'urgence. Dans cette thĂšse, en guise de premiĂšre contribution, nous proposons un schĂ©ma de diffusion efficace Ă plusieurs sauts, appelĂ© Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), pour diffuser les messages d'urgence. DPS calcule les tailles de partitions dynamiques et le calendrier de transmission pour chaque partition; Ă l'intĂ©rieur de la zone arriĂšre de l'expĂ©diteur, les partitions sont calculĂ©es de sorte qu'en moyenne chaque partition contient au moins un seul vĂ©hicule; l'objectif est de s'assurer que seul un vĂ©hicule dans la partition la plus Ă©loignĂ©e (de l'expĂ©diteur) est utilisĂ© pour diffuser le message, jusqu'au saut suivant; ceci donne lieu Ă un dĂ©lai d'un saut plus court. DPS assure une diffusion rapide des messages d'urgence. En outre, un nouveau mĂ©canisme d'Ă©tablissement de liaison, qui utilise des tonalitĂ©s occupĂ©es, est proposĂ© pour rĂ©soudre le problĂšme du problĂšme de terminal cachĂ©.
Dans les VANETs, la Multidiffusion, c'est-à -dire la transmission d'un message d'une source à un nombre limité de véhicules connus en tant que destinations, est trÚs importante. Par rapport à la diffusion unique, avec Multidiffusion, la source peut simultanément prendre en charge plusieurs destinations, via une arborescence de multidiffusion, ce qui permet d'économiser de la bande passante et de réduire la congestion du réseau. Cependant, puisque les VANETs ont une topologie dynamique, le maintien de la connectivité de l'arbre de multidiffusion est un problÚme majeur. Comme deuxiÚme contribution, nous proposons deux approches pour modéliser l'utilisation totale de bande passante d'une arborescence de multidiffusion: (i) la premiÚre approche considÚre le nombre de segments de route impliqués dans l'arbre de multidiffusion et (ii) la seconde approche considÚre le nombre d'intersections relais dans l'arbre de multidiffusion. Une heuristique est proposée pour chaque approche. Pour assurer la qualité de service de l'arbre de multidiffusion, des procédures efficaces sont proposées pour le suivi des destinations et la surveillance de la qualité de service des segments de route.
Comme troisiĂšme contribution, nous Ă©tudions le problĂšme de la congestion causĂ©e par le routage du trafic de donnĂ©es dans les VANETs. Nous proposons (1) une approche de routage basĂ©e sur lâinfonuagique qui, contrairement aux approches existantes, prend en compte les chemins de routage existants qui relaient dĂ©jĂ les donnĂ©es dans les VANETs. Les nouvelles demandes de routage sont traitĂ©es de sorte qu'aucun segment de route ne soit surchargĂ© par plusieurs chemins de routage croisĂ©s. Au lieu d'acheminer les donnĂ©es en utilisant des chemins de routage sur un nombre limitĂ© de segments de route, notre approche Ă©quilibre la charge des donnĂ©es en utilisant des chemins de routage sur l'ensemble des tronçons routiers urbains, dans le but d'empĂȘcher, dans la mesure du possible, les congestions locales dans les VANETs; et (2) une approche basĂ©e sur le rĂ©seau dĂ©fini par logiciel (SDN) pour surveiller la connectivitĂ© VANET en temps rĂ©el et les dĂ©lais de transmission sur chaque segment de route. Les donnĂ©es de surveillance sont utilisĂ©es en entrĂ©e de l'approche de routage.Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will be eventually provided in the near future for both safety and comfort of people during their travel on the roads. Vehicular ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), represent the key component of ITS. VANETs consist of vehicles that communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. Indeed, vehicles will be able to exchange messages that include, for example, information about road traffic, emergency situations, and entertainment. Particularly, emergency messages are broadcasted by vehicles in case of an emergency (e.g., car accident); in order to allow drivers to react in time (e.g., slow down), emergency messages must be reliably disseminated with very short delay. In VANETs, there are several factors, such as lossy channel, hidden terminals, interferences and scarce bandwidth, which make satisfying reliability and delay requirements of emergency messages very challenging. In this thesis, as the first contribution, we propose a reliable time-efficient and multi-hop broadcasting scheme, called Dynamic Partitioning Scheme (DPS), to disseminate emergency messages. DPS computes dynamic partition sizes and the transmission schedule for each partition; inside the back area of the sender, the partitions are computed such that in average each partition contains at least a single vehicle; the objective is to ensure that only a vehicle in the farthest partition (from the sender) is used to disseminate the message, to next hop, resulting in shorter one hop delay. DPS ensures fast dissemination of emergency messages. Moreover, a new handshaking mechanism, that uses busy tones, is proposed to solve the problem of hidden terminal problem.
In VANETs, Multicasting, i.e. delivering a message from a source to a limited known number of vehicles as destinations, is very important. Compared to Unicasting, with Multicasting, the source can simultaneously support multiple destinations, via a multicast tree, saving bandwidth and reducing overall communication congestion. However, since VANETs have a dynamic topology, maintaining the connectivity of the multicast tree is a major issue. As the second contribution, we propose two approaches to model total bandwidth usage of a multicast tree: (i) the first approach considers the number of road segments involved in the multicast tree and (ii) the second approach considers the number of relaying intersections involved in the multicast tree. A heuristic is proposed for each approach. To ensure QoS of the multicasting tree, efficient procedures are proposed for tracking destinations and monitoring QoS of road segments.
As the third contribution, we study the problem of network congestion in routing data traffic in VANETs. We propose (1) a Cloud-based routing approach that, in opposition to existing approaches, takes into account existing routing paths which are already relaying data in VANETs. New routing requests are processed such that no road segment gets overloaded by multiple crossing routing paths. Instead of routing over a limited set of road segments, our approach balances the load of communication paths over the whole urban road segments, with the objective to prevent, whenever possible, local congestions in VANETs; and (2) a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based approach to monitor real-time VANETs connectivity and transmission delays on each road segment. The monitoring data is used as input to the routing approach
On Application of Wireless Sensor Networks for Healthcare Monitoring
With the recent advances in embedded systems and very low power ,wireless tech nologies, there has been a great interest in the development and application of a new class of distributed Wireless body area network for health monitoring.
The first part of the thesis presents a remote patient monitoring system within the scope of Body Area Network standardization. In this regime, wireless sensor networks are used to continuously acquire the patientâs Electrocardiogram signs and transmit data to the base station via IEEE.802.15. The personal Server (PS) which is responsible to provide real-time displaying, storing, and analyzing the patientâs vital signs is developed in MATLAB. It also transfers ECG streams in real-time to a remote client such as a physician or medical center through internet. The PS has the potential to be integrated with home or hospital computer systems. A prototype of this system has been developed and implemented. Tlie developed system takes advantage of two important features for healthcare monitoring: (i) ECG data acqui sition using wearable sensors and (ii) real-time data remote through internet. The fact that our system is interacting with sensor network nodes using MATLAB makes it distinct from other previous works. The second part is devoted to the study of indoor body-area channel model for 2.4 GHz narrowband communications. To un derstand the narrowband radio propagation near the body, several measurements are carried out in two separate environments for different on body locations. On the basis of these measurements, we have characterized the fading statistics on body links and we have provided a physical interpretation of our results
Automation, Protection and Control of Substation Based on IEC 61850
Reliability of power system protection system has been a key issue in the substation operation due to the use of multi-vendor equipment of proprietary features, environmental issues, and complex fault diagnosis. Failure to address these issues could have a significant effect on the performance of the entire electricity grid. With the introduction of IEC 61850 standard, substation automation system (SAS) has significantly altered the scenario in utilities and industries as indicated in this thesis
