Multinet : enabler for next generation enterprise wireless services

    Get PDF
Wireless communications are currently experiencing a fast migration toward the beyond third-generation (B3G)/fourth generation (4G) era. This represents a generational change in wireless systems: new capabilities related to mobility and new services support is required and new concepts as individual-centric, user-centric or ambient-aware communications are included. One of the main restrictions associated to wireless technology is mobility management, this feature was not considered in the design phase; for this reason, a complete solution is not already found, although different solutions are proposed and are being proposed. In MULTINET project, features as mobility and multihoming are applied to wireless network to provide the necessary network and application functionality enhancements for seamless data communication mobility considering end-user scenario and preferences. The aim of this paper is to show the benefits of these functionalities from the Service Providers and final User point of view

The new blueprint : Moving towards university knowledge city

    Get PDF
All knowledge is a form of tradition, whether ingrained in its structure, content, or the value that people attribute to it. Civilized societies have great traditions of knowledge, and the post modern era which discovered print and digitalization gives leverage to the value of those traditions not only in transforming them into intellectual assets but also the means by which they can systematically improve the way society live, work and continue to change in creative and dynamic ways. Cities-their infrastructure, economies and culture are all being transformed by knowledge. The university is a micro knowledge city, and it needs to develop a larger blue print to sustain its growth as a knowledge city. The university must be aware of the importance to capture knowledge assets within the micro-culture and practice of its academic, professional, pastoral, social and cultural services; the sharing of those knowledge assets; and the transformation of those knowledge assets to leverage life experiences of citizens in the campus knowledge-city, and beyond

    Refocusing the Australian Army

Recent operations have distracted the Army from being best postured for regional engagement.1 As the Afghanistan commitment winds down, the Army will need to overcome this neglect by shifting its primary focus to regional priorities, where geographic determinants and great power dynamics will feature. The maturation of defence infrastructure and capability projects dating back to the 1980s, coupled with capabilities entering service soon, means that the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and the Army in particular, has a strong foundation from which to refocus on engagement with regional forces, albeit with some exceptions. For instance, recent operations have demonstrated the need for sound intelligence support and a pool of language-trained and culturally-aware personnel, but regionally-oriented skills in these areas have atrophied. Beyond maintaining broad capabilities for a wide range of contingencies, the key to ensuring the Army‟s successful reorientation will be a regionally-focused reinvestment in intelligence, language and culture skills

Affect and believability in game characters:a review of the use of affective computing in games

    Get PDF
Virtual agents are important in many digital environments. Designing a character that highly engages users in terms of interaction is an intricate task constrained by many requirements. One aspect that has gained more attention recently is the effective dimension of the agent. Several studies have addressed the possibility of developing an affect-aware system for a better user experience. Particularly in games, including emotional and social features in NPCs adds depth to the characters, enriches interaction possibilities, and combined with the basic level of competence, creates a more appealing game. Design requirements for emotionally intelligent NPCs differ from general autonomous agents with the main goal being a stronger player-agent relationship as opposed to problem solving and goal assessment. Nevertheless, deploying an affective module into NPCs adds to the complexity of the architecture and constraints. In addition, using such composite NPC in games seems beyond current technology, despite some brave attempts. However, a MARPO-type modular architecture would seem a useful starting point for adding emotions

Subverting the Gaze, Seducing with the Bible: A Study of Oscar Wilde's Salomé

    Get PDF
The present article engages with the eponymous character of Oscar Wilde’s SalomĂ© and focuses on her subversion of the patriarchal rules, and on her attempts at seducing the prophet Jokanaan. Wilde’s SalomĂ© becomes “an erotic symbol of daring, transgression, and perversity” (Sloan 112). She wants to look at Jokanaan, as well as to be touched by him and openly states her great desire for him, using the imagery taken from the biblical Song of Songs to express her passion. Moreover, the Princess skillfully adopts and reverses the male gaze to manipulate others and go beyond the patriarchal constraints at Herod’s court. She becomes aware that the only way to reach her goals is to look actively and evade being a mere object of the male gaze. The article shows that the imagery employed in the eponymous character’s speeches contributes to her portrayal as a seductress, also accentuating her rebellion, and analyzes how the Princess transgresses the patriarchal constraints through appropriating the male gaze

Digital Life, Digital Tattoo and the Filter Bubble: raising the awareness and the cautions on online activities through information literacy education

Digital life has become an extension of human existence, therefore everyone may now take digital life for granted. Many activities, such as communicating, finding and sharing information, etc. which used to be done through the analog media are now conducted through digital ones. However, many of us may not realize the consequences we have to bear with these online activities. An activity done in the digital environment will affect one’s real life. Being recorded and archived, these activities will be our digital tattoo. They stay forever. This digital tattoo will not only affect one’s reputation but also one’s infosphere. Some may be aware of, first, crafting information about themselves, but most do not realize the second. They are not aware that their infosphere is pretty much determined by their digital tattoo. Many search engines and websites recorded every online activity. They create personalization of information services by applying algorithms based on the archives they stored. This seems to be a convenient way to get information. However, it has its own harm. Such service prevents us from getting information beyond our habits and preferences, thus, it prevent us from having a wider perspective. Eli Periser (2011) called this filter bubble. Everyone needs to know this. Through information literacy education, librarians can help to spread the knowledge on how to maintain digital tattoo and to minimize the filter bubble

Transfer as a reciprocal process: How to foster receptivity to results of transdisciplinary research

    Get PDF
Transdisciplinary research (TDR) seeks to address real-world problems and aims to be socially transformative. This normative objective extends beyond particular TDR projects, as real-world problems are embedded in concrete contexts but, at the same time, are also related to wider societal challenges that are not restricted to one context. Therefore, TDR generally entails transfer of knowledge and results to other contexts. However, the TDR discourse has mainly treated transfer efforts from the perspective of scientific generalization, translation and packaging of knowledge. Within this understanding of transfer, little attention has been paid to interplay between contexts and the role of new contexts themselves. This article is based on qualitative explorative research on four TDR projects. Its results were iteratively derived through project analysis, reflection on insights from the literature and discussions with TDR experts. We propose that transfer is a complex reciprocal process in which different types of knowledge are provided and transferred to other contexts, where knowledge is adapted, enriched and modified. In addition to project researchers, actors in other (pick-up) contexts also play an important role for successful transfer and appropriation of TDR results. Generating transfer potential within the duration of a project depends on being aware of potential pick-up contexts. To address the interdependent aspects of transfer (results, mediation, and appropriation in other contexts), we present a comprehensive model outlining TDR transfer processes. To support projects seeking to raise their transfer potential in a more conscious manner, we also formulate three overarching recommendations: 1) process results for transfer adequately, 2) identify and support intermediaries and, 3) increase awareness of and address other contexts. Considering these recommendations while also being aware of their interdependence may increase potential for transfer of knowledge and results to other contexts. Our conceptual understanding acknowledges the complexity and non-linearity of endeavors to take advantage of case-specifically gained knowledge and results in other contexts or at other scales

Respite services: enhancing the quality of daily life for caregivers and persons with dementia

Journal ArticleMany family caregivers are going far beyond their abilities and circumstances trying to be the best possible caregivers. This is a very commendable goal. Unfortunately, many of these caregivers are risking their own personal well-being and sometimes their family life in the process. Many caregivers are not fully aware of the short and longer term consequences of doing it all alone because they are overwhelmed with managing their daily tasks and responsibilities

LE VÉCU SPIRITUEL DE LA MUSIQUE COMME EXPÉRIENCE MÉTAPHYSIQUE

Interested by the inward relation of ’appearance-development’ between human being and the great music, the author aims to highlight part of this peculiar communication, which covers a unique spiritual manner of living thanks to the hidden message that sonorous art is able to put in act. Much more than the usual aesthetic experience, during an authentic listening to music, man is able to perceiving the „beyond”, a meta-physical „voice” to be deciphered in its in-depth meaning. The article focuses on the possibility of catching and understanding the fullness of music, by challenging human being to be aware of a complex metaphysical experience of life
