    Hacker Combat: A Competitive Sport from Programmatic Dueling & Cyberwarfare

    The history of humanhood has included competitive activities of many different forms. Sports have offered many benefits beyond that of entertainment. At the time of this article, there exists not a competitive ecosystem for cyber security beyond that of conventional capture the flag competitions, and the like. This paper introduces a competitive framework with a foundation on computer science, and hacking. This proposed competitive landscape encompasses the ideas underlying information security, software engineering, and cyber warfare. We also demonstrate the opportunity to rank, score, & categorize actionable skill levels into tiers of capability. Physiological metrics are analyzed from participants during gameplay. These analyses provide support regarding the intricacies required for competitive play, and analysis of play. We use these intricacies to build a case for an organized competitive ecosystem. Using previous player behavior from gameplay, we also demonstrate the generation of an artificial agent purposed with gameplay at a competitive level

    A qualitative analysis of the factors that protect athletes against doping in sport

    Design: Ten competitive athletes (M = 5, F = 5) representing five different sports (field hockey, boxing, football, triathlon, rugby) were recruited through convenience sampling to undertake a semi-structured interview to enable a qualitative analysis of athletes' lifelong athletic careers. Method: Verbatim transcripts were analysed using an established three-stage coding process to identify the common themes within the narratives. Results: Personal and situational protective factors were identified in the accounts. Personal factors included: (i) a strong moral stance against cheating; (ii) an identity beyond sport; (iii) self-control; and (iv) resilience to social group pressures. Situational factors included secure attachments to people at all stages of the athlete's life. This facilitated both the promotion of moral decision making and assisted in the development of anti-doping attitudes. When situational factors – such as a pro-doping climate – arose, key attachments in the athletes' lives interplayed with personal factors to reduce the risk of doping. Conclusions: These findings offer insights into factors that protect competitive athletes against using PEDs in sport and further our understanding of the complex interaction between risk and protective factors at individual, psychosocial and societal levels among competitive athletes. As a complex behaviour, doping in sport cannot be prevented by solely focussing on the individual athlete; contextual factors beyond the athlete's control also impact on this behaviour.     According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) is the largest state trading enterprise reporting to the World Trade Organization under article XVII requirements. This study estimates the market power exerted by the CWB in international barley markets. The analysis incorporates international price discrimination across markets for similar types of barley, the intertwining relationships between feed and malting barley markets, and producer behavior in the absence of the CWB.     Mathematical Modeling for Demurrage Reduction in Coal Transportation for an Indian Thermal Power Plant

    Competitive pressures on power plants have seen them attempting to reduce their operating expenses for profitable operations. In India, the plants use wagons of the Indian Railways to transport coal from the mines (in case of domestic coal) or from the ports (in case of imported coal). Once these loaded railway wagons have reached the power plant, they need to be unloaded and released within a stipulated time frame. If there is any delay beyond the stipulated time, the power plant has to pay penalty cost to the Indian Railways. In this paper, we describe an analysis of the underlying causes behind these delays. We use correlation analysis, queuing theory and simulation to mathematically model the coal arrival process in the company. The recommendation suggested by the study is currently under implementation.

    Much Ado about Nothing?- The Influence of Functional Food on Profitability of German Food Industry.

    Product innovation is a competitive strategy in food industry. Successful product development management is a key determinant of a firm?s performance. In recent years functional foods, which are innovative food products that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition, have become increasingly important in Germany. Using the structure-conductperformance approach it can be argued that product innovation raises barriers to entry and thus improve profitability. This study examines the effect of functional food innovative activity (compared to overall innovative activity) on the profitability of 23 German food industry sectors from 1995 to 1999. Panel data analysis also includes concentration, firm size, market size and growth, advertising expenditure and capital intensity.     National Review of Interscholastic Competitive Balance Solutions Related to the Public-Private Debate

    The public-private debate in interscholastic athletics has vexed athletic administrators and policy-makers for more than a century. The ability of private schools to secure athletic talent beyond the defined geographic borders that restrain public schools has led to competitive imbalance in many states. Competitive imbalance is evidenced by a disproportionate amount of athletic success demonstrated by private schools, often in the form of state championships. To determine the current landscape of interscholastic competitive balance, commissioners and high-ranking officials at each state association listed within the directory of the National Federation of State High Schools (NFHS) were contacted to identify their policies. Current competitive balance solutions include enrollment classifications, separate playoffs, enrollment multipliers and subtractors, tournament success factors, and consideration of socioeconomic factors. The results of this analysis provide an overview of competitive balance solutions being implemented in the United States

    Advancing liquid atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry toward ultra-high-throughput analysis

    Label-free high-throughput screening using mass spectrometry has the potential to provide rapid large-scale sample analysis at a speed of more than one sample per second. Such speed is important for compound library, assay and future clinical screening of millions of samples within a reasonable time frame. Herein, we present a liquid atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) setup for high-throughput large-scale sample analysis (>5 samples per second) for three substance classes (peptides, antibiotics and lipids). Liquid support matrices (LSM) were used for the analysis of standard substances as well as complex biological fluids (milk). Throughput and analytical robustness were mainly dependent on the complexity of the sample composition and the current limitations of the commercial hardware. However, the ultimate limits of liquid AP-MALDI in sample throughput can be conservatively estimated to be beyond 10-20 samples per second. This level of analytical speed is highly competitive compared with other label-free MS methods, including electrospray ionization and solid state MALDI, as well as MS methods using multiplexing by labelling, which in principle can also be used in combination with liquid AP-MALDI MS

    A policy analysis of the Teaching Excellence Framework’s notion of competition for UK higher education

    The thesis focuses on this competitive policy document due to its great importance and potential impact for society, especially where the thesis analyses the TEF’s notions of ‘competition’ as a redefining concept for higher education (UK) through critical discourse analysis. The analysis offers a critique beyond that of commodification and economic marketisation, reconceived as a socioeconomic political lever to achieve ‘excellence’ and ‘equality’ - all under the TEF’s notions of competition, whereby competition acts as natural referenda of checks-and-balances thereby assuring ‘excellence’ for higher education. Through peeling away the TEF’s outer layers of discourse, the analysis reveals underlying ideological political economic beliefs. Competitive tensions are uncovered as key components, whereby policy analysis un-weaves and separates the various complex ideas surrounding important issues of a competitive higher education system, pushing back against its pro-competitive stance. This I argue, is to help highlight and understand the ‘beliefs’ that underpin the TEF’s faith in competition, the ability of competitive markets, and the contours through which a neoliberal paradigm achieves a competitive policy for higher education. The contribution to knowledge of this thesis is provided through discerning and exposing dissonances within the TEF, namely those between competitive free markets and public higher education institutions. I argue that reforming higher education into competitive frameworks reduces, not enhances, higher education that commodifies knowledge into capital for sale, whilst ameliorating equality as opportunity for a competitive faithful that believes private self-interest yields the greatest of rewards, for the greatest number of people
