Effects of finite arm-length of LISA on analysis of gravitational waves from MBH binaries
Response of an interferometer becomes complicated for gravitational wave
shorter than the arm-length of the detector, as nature of wave appears
strongly. We have studied how parameter estimation for merging massive black
hole binaries are affected by this complicated effect in the case of LISA. It
is shown that three dimensional positions of some binaries might be determined
much better than the past estimations that use the long wave approximation. For
equal mass binaries this improvement is most prominent at \sim 10^5\sol.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.
SiFTO: An Empirical Method for Fitting SNe Ia Light Curves
We present SiFTO, a new empirical method for modeling type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia) light curves by manipulating a spectral template. We make use of
high-redshift SN observations when training the model, allowing us to extend it
bluer than rest frame U. This increases the utility of our high-redshift SN
observations by allowing us to use more of the available data. We find that
when the shape of the light curve is described using a stretch prescription,
applying the same stretch at all wavelengths is not an adequate description.
SiFTO therefore uses a generalization of stretch which applies different
stretch factors as a function of both the wavelength of the observed filter and
the stretch in the rest-frame B band. We compare SiFTO to other published
light-curve models by applying them to the same set of SN photometry, and
demonstrate that SiFTO and SALT2 perform better than the alternatives when
judged by the scatter around the best fit luminosity distance relationship. We
further demonstrate that when SiFTO and SALT2 are trained on the same data set
the cosmological results agree.Comment: Modified to better match published version in Ap
Wide baseline stereo matching with convex bounded-distortion constraints
Finding correspondences in wide baseline setups is a challenging problem.
Existing approaches have focused largely on developing better feature
descriptors for correspondence and on accurate recovery of epipolar line
constraints. This paper focuses on the challenging problem of finding
correspondences once approximate epipolar constraints are given. We introduce a
novel method that integrates a deformation model. Specifically, we formulate
the problem as finding the largest number of corresponding points related by a
bounded distortion map that obeys the given epipolar constraints. We show that,
while the set of bounded distortion maps is not convex, the subset of maps that
obey the epipolar line constraints is convex, allowing us to introduce an
efficient algorithm for matching. We further utilize a robust cost function for
matching and employ majorization-minimization for its optimization. Our
experiments indicate that our method finds significantly more accurate maps
than existing approaches
Flexible copper-indium-diselenide films and devices for space applications
With the ever increasing demands on space power systems, it is imperative that low cost, lightweight, reliable photovoltaics be developed. One avenue of pursuit for future space power applications is the use of low cost, lightweight flexible PV cells and arrays. Most work in this area assumes the use of flexible amorphous silicon (a-Si), despite its inherent instability and low efficiencies. However, polycrystalline thin film PV such as copper-indium-diselenide (CIS) are inherently more stable and exhibit better performance than a-Si. Furthermore, preliminary data indicate that CIS also offers exciting properties with respect to space applications. However, CIS has only heretofore only produced on rigid substrates. The implications of flexible CIS upon present and future space power platforms was explored. Results indicate that space qualified CIS can dramatically reduce the cost of PV, and in most cases, can be substituted for silicon (Si) based on end-of-life (EOL) estimations. Furthermore, where cost is a prime consideration, CIS can become cost effective than gallium arsenide (GaAs) in some applications. Second, investigations into thin film deposition on flexible substrates were made, and data from these tests indicate that fabrication of flexible CIS devices is feasible. Finally, data is also presented on preliminary TCO/CdS/CuInSe2/Mo devices
Affine Subspace Representation for Feature Description
This paper proposes a novel Affine Subspace Representation (ASR) descriptor
to deal with affine distortions induced by viewpoint changes. Unlike the
traditional local descriptors such as SIFT, ASR inherently encodes local
information of multi-view patches, making it robust to affine distortions while
maintaining a high discriminative ability. To this end, PCA is used to
represent affine-warped patches as PCA-patch vectors for its compactness and
efficiency. Then according to the subspace assumption, which implies that the
PCA-patch vectors of various affine-warped patches of the same keypoint can be
represented by a low-dimensional linear subspace, the ASR descriptor is
obtained by using a simple subspace-to-point mapping. Such a linear subspace
representation could accurately capture the underlying information of a
keypoint (local structure) under multiple views without sacrificing its
distinctiveness. To accelerate the computation of ASR descriptor, a fast
approximate algorithm is proposed by moving the most computational part (ie,
warp patch under various affine transformations) to an offline training stage.
Experimental results show that ASR is not only better than the state-of-the-art
descriptors under various image transformations, but also performs well without
a dedicated affine invariant detector when dealing with viewpoint changes.Comment: To Appear in the 2014 European Conference on Computer Visio
Further SEASAT SAR coastal ocean wave analysis
Analysis techniques used to exploit SEASAT synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data of gravity waves are discussed and the SEASAT SAR's ability to monitor large scale variations in gravity wave fields in both deep and shallow water is evaluated. The SAR analysis techniques investigated included motion compensation adjustments and the semicausal model for spectral analysis of SAR wave data. It was determined that spectra generated from fast Fourier transform analysis (FFT) of SAR wave data were not significantly altered when either range telerotation adjustments or azimuth focus shifts were used during processing of the SAR signal histories, indicating that SEASAT imagery of gravity waves is not significantly improved or degraded by motion compensation adjustments. Evaluation of the semicausal (SC) model using SEASAT SAR data from Rev. 974 indicates that the SC spectral estimates were not significantly better than the FFT results
Ensemble tractography
Fiber tractography uses diffusion MRI to estimate the trajectory and cortical projection zones of white matter fascicles in the living human brain. There are many different tractography algorithms and each requires the user to set several parameters, such as curvature threshold. Choosing a single algorithm with a specific parameters sets poses two challenges. First, different algorithms and parameter values produce different results. Second, the optimal choice of algorithm and parameter value may differ between different white matter regions or different fascicles, subjects, and acquisition parameters. We propose using ensemble methods to reduce algorithm and parameter dependencies. To do so we separate the processes of fascicle generation and evaluation. Specifically, we analyze the value of creating optimized connectomes by systematically combining candidate fascicles from an ensemble of algorithms (deterministic and probabilistic) and sweeping through key parameters (curvature and stopping criterion). The ensemble approach leads to optimized connectomes that provide better cross-validatedprediction error of the diffusion MRI data than optimized connectomes generated using the singlealgorithms or parameter set. Furthermore, the ensemble approach produces connectomes that contain both short- and long-range fascicles, whereas single-parameter connectomes are biased towards one or the other. In summary, a systematic ensemble tractography approach can produce connectomes that are superior to standard single parameter estimates both for predicting the diffusion measurements and estimating white matter fascicles.Fil: Takemura, Hiromasa.
