    Critical Management Issues for Implementing RFID in Supply Chain Management

    The benefits of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in the supply chain are fairly compelling. It has the potential to revolutionise the efficiency, accuracy and security of the supply chain with significant impact on overall profitability. A number of companies are actively involved in testing and adopting this technology. It is estimated that the market for RFID products and services will increase significantly in the next few years. Despite this trend, there are major impediments to RFID adoption in supply chain. While RFID systems have been around for several decades, the technology for supply chain management is still emerging. We describe many of the challenges, setbacks and barriers facing RFID implementations in supply chains, discuss the critical issues for management and offer some suggestions. In the process, we take an in-depth look at cost, technology, standards, privacy and security and business process reengineering related issues surrounding RFID technology in supply chains

    Building best practice automotive after sales network:The Volkswagen case

    This thesis aims to analyze the service operations and networks in the automotive industry as research into the automotive After Sales service network lacks the necessary fine details and industrial feedback. Its purpose is to present the insights and lessons learned from studying the After Sales service network of Volkswagen, thereby defining a roadmap for further research, and to discuss the needs of the sector. The foremost idea in defining the research question was based on the observation that the automotive After Sales business could be improved by applying and adapting principles and methods used in other industries and in the field of Business Operations research. The initial step thereafter was an extensive external and internal literature research. The key characteristics of the automotive industry in Germany, at the VW Group, at OEMs and at the wholesale level were identified and are described in chapter two. In chapter three the primary After Sales processes are described and analyzed, from the interaction with the customer to the necessary activities at wholesale and OEM level. The proposed research methodology relied on extensive external and internal research and a qualitative and quantitative approach based on structured, in-depth interviews and direct observation. The objective of the interviews was to highlight the most important activities in the service delivery operations within the network and identify the major key factors for success or failure. The best practice dealer model is described in chapter five and was subsequently abstracted and generalized so that it can be applied to other industries too. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), described in chapter six, was undertaken to determine the “efficient frontier” of service operations. Key performance indicators were identified from the important elements discussed and the best practices. In order to achieve an in-depth understanding of their general business models a benchmark analysis of six companies from industrial sectors complementary to the automotive business was then carried out and is described in chapter seven. The thesis highlights the development of a “best practice” network in chapter eight. This network grasps the dynamics of After Sales activities in the light of new technological developments and the experience gained from the benchmark with other industries. C&S is a leading low-cost, high-service procurement and distribution provider servicing grocery retailers, and is the second largest grocery wholesaler in the United States.' The firm has realized average annual revenue growth of nearly 20% since 1995, and projects nearly twenty billion dollars of revenue for 2006. C&S operations are mobilized to deliver over 53,000 grocery items to more than 4,000 corporate customers "at record speed."2 Historically, C&S Wholesale Grocers has relied upon process excellence to sustain profitable growth. An internal group, the Business Process Excellence group, is currently focusing on process improvements across all areas of the C&S value chain. In support of the "BPE" team, this project focuses on "Vendor Integration", or determining the most effective processes and programs by which C&S should collaborate with its vendors to drive out supply chain costs. The goal of this thesis is to present a framework for the determination of "best-in-class" programs relating to vendor integration, programs which contribute to sustainable growth. First, a presentation of the drivers of sustainable growth is defined.(cont.) Then a framework is employed to generate a host of available programs to be considered. Two of the programs are selected for an in-depth evaluation: Lead-Time Reduction and Global Data Synchronization.     This thesis examines efficiency in the retail industry in two different directions. In the first setting, the link between inventory efficiency and performance is examined in relation to firm characteristics and exogenous explanatory variables. More specifically, in addition to general firm-specific characteristics, the effects of chain affiliation and time trends within retail chains is examined. The effects of business environment factors on inventory turnover are examined on the basis of geographic location and market conditions. In the customer efficiency setting, efficiency is studied by observing customers’ in-store behaviours to identify how specific customer characteristics in general, and the use of in-store carrying equipment in particular, are associated with shopper efficiency. These two avenues for detecting important retail efficiency metrics are examined in three individual research papers. The papers empirically demonstrate two different perspectives on efficiency that are important for retailers to be aware of. From this customer and retailer perspective, several dilemmas exist that have been only partly covered in the three papers. This dissertation aims to discuss some of these dilemmas and to demonstrate some of the dualities that exist in the intricate interconnection between the customer and the retailer in the pursuit of efficiency. Overall, the thesis offers new insights, makes significant contributions to the literature and to retail practice in terms of the complex topic of retailer logistical performance and customer efficiency and develops a better understanding of some tenets of eminent and sustainable brick and mortar retailing

    Traceability system for capturing, processing and providing consumer-relevant information about wood products: System solution and its economic feasibility

    Current research and practice reports indicate the existence of purchase barriers concerning eco-friendly products, e.g. wood products. These can be ascribed to consumers' mistrust regarding the non-observable environmental impact of wood products. To counter the mistrust, wood products are commonly endowed with eco-labels, which may be perceived mostly as a marketing tool, therefore not fulfilling their intended purpose. Current studies have shown that providing consumers with wood product information based on traceability systems increases product trust and purchase intentions, with those information items most valued by consumers being identified as well. Based on this, the paper proposes a traceability information system for the capturing, processing, and provision of product information using examples of wood furniture. Furthermore, a cost-benefit model for the proposed solution is developed. The calculations indicate the possibility of implementing traceability at the item level based on a four-layer system architecture enabling the capture and delivery of all information valued by consumers at acceptable costs. The proposed system helps to overcome purchase barriers of eco-friendly products, increasing consumers' product trust and purchase intentions

    Retail Inventory Control Strategies

    Despite using computerized merchandise control systems in retail, the rate of stockouts has remained stagnant. The inability to satisfy customer needs has caused a loss of 4% in potential revenue and resulted in dissatisfied customers. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore cost-effective inventory control strategies used by discount retail managers. The conceptual framework that grounded the study was chaos theory, which helped identify why some business leaders rely on forecasting techniques or other cost-effective strategies as an attempt to prevent stockouts. The target population was comprised of discount retail managers located throughout northeast Jacksonville, Florida. Purposeful sampling led to selecting 6 retail managers who successfully demonstrated cost-effective inventory control strategies for mitigating stockouts. Data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews, company websites, and company documents. Analysis included using nodes to identify similar words and axial-coding to categorize the nodes into themes. Transcript evaluation, member checking, and methodological triangulation strengthened the credibility of the findings. Five themes emerged: (a) internal stockout reduction strategies, (b) external stockout reduction strategies, (c) replenishment system strategies, (d) inventory optimization strategies, and (e) best practices for inventory control. This study may contribute to positive social change by improving inventory management, which may reduce demand fluctuations in the supply chain and reduce logistics costs in the transportation of freight thereby leading to improved customer satisfaction
