FISST Based Method for Multi-Target Tracking in the Image Plane of Optical Sensors
A finite set statistics (FISST)-based method is proposed for multi-target tracking in the image plane of optical sensors. The method involves using signal amplitude information in probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter which is derived from FISST to improve multi-target tracking performance. The amplitude of signals generated by the optical sensor is modeled first, from which the amplitude likelihood ratio between target and clutter is derived. An alternative approach is adopted for the situations where the signal noise ratio (SNR) of target is unknown. Then the PHD recursion equations incorporated with signal information are derived and the Gaussian mixture (GM) implementation of this filter is given. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves significantly better performance than the generic PHD filter. Moreover, our method has much lower computational complexity in the scenario with high SNR and dense clutter
A Nonparametric Approach to Segmentation of Ladar Images
The advent of advanced laser radar (ladar) systems that record full-waveform signal data has inspired numerous inquisitions which aspire to extract additional, previously unavailable, information about the illuminated scene from the collected data. The quality of the information, however, is often related to the limitations of the ladar camera used to collect the data. This research project uses full-waveform analysis of ladar signals, and basic principles of optics, to propose a new formulation for an accepted signal model. A new waveform model taking into account backscatter reflectance is the key to overcoming specific deficiencies of the ladar camera at hand, namely the ability to discern pulse-spreading effects of elongated targets. A concert of non-parametric statistics and familiar image processing methods are used to calculate the orientation angle of the illuminated objects, and the deficiency of the hardware is circumvented. Segmentation of the various ladar images performed as part of the angle estimation, and this is shown to be a new and effective strategy for analyzing the output of the AFIT ladar camera
Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology with Gravitational Waves
Gravitational wave detectors are already operating at interesting sensitivity
levels, and they have an upgrade path that should result in secure detections
by 2014. We review the physics of gravitational waves, how they interact with
detectors (bars and interferometers), and how these detectors operate. We study
the most likely sources of gravitational waves and review the data analysis
methods that are used to extract their signals from detector noise. Then we
consider the consequences of gravitational wave detections and observations for

Acoustic Speaker Localization with Strong Reverberation and Adaptive Feature Filtering with a Bayes RFS Framework
The thesis investigates the challenges of speaker localization in presence of strong reverberation, multi-speaker tracking, and multi-feature multi-speaker state filtering, using sound recordings from microphones. Novel reverberation-robust speaker localization algorithms are derived from the signal and room acoustics models. A multi-speaker tracking filter and a multi-feature multi-speaker state filter are developed based upon the generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli random finite set framework. Experiments and comparative studies have verified and demonstrated the benefits of the proposed methods
Bayesian Bounds on Parameter Estimation Accuracy for Compact Coalescing Binary Gravitational Wave Signals
A global network of laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors is
projected to be in operation by around the turn of the century. Here, the noisy
output of a single instrument is examined. A gravitational wave is assumed to
have been detected in the data and we deal with the subsequent problem of
parameter estimation. Specifically, we investigate theoretical lower bounds on
the minimum mean-square errors associated with measuring the parameters of the
inspiral waveform generated by an orbiting system of neutron stars/black holes.
Three theoretical lower bounds on parameter estimation accuracy are considered:
the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB); the Weiss-Weinstein bound (WWB); and the Ziv-Zakai
bound (ZZB). We obtain the WWB and ZZB for the Newtonian-form of the coalescing
binary waveform, and compare them with published CRB and numerical Monte-Carlo
results. At large SNR, we find that the theoretical bounds are all identical
and are attained by the Monte-Carlo results. As SNR gradually drops below 10,
the WWB and ZZB are both found to provide increasingly tighter lower bounds
than the CRB. However, at these levels of moderate SNR, there is a significant
departure between all the bounds and the numerical Monte-Carlo results.Comment: 17 pages (LaTeX), 4 figures. Submitted to Physical Review
Improving Range Estimation of a 3D FLASH LADAR via Blind Deconvolution
The purpose of this research effort is to improve and characterize range estimation in a three-dimensional FLASH LAser Detection And Ranging (3D FLASH LADAR) by investigating spatial dimension blurring effects. The myriad of emerging applications for 3D FLASH LADAR both as primary and supplemental sensor necessitate superior performance including accurate range estimates. Along with range information, this sensor also provides an imaging or laser vision capability. Consequently, accurate range estimates would also greatly aid in image quality of a target or remote scene under interrogation. Unlike previous efforts, this research accounts for pixel coupling by defining the range image mathematical model as a convolution between the system spatial impulse response and the object (target or remote scene) at a particular range slice. Using this model, improved range estimation is possible by object restoration from the data observations. Object estimation is principally performed by deriving a blind deconvolution Generalized Expectation Maximization (GEM) algorithm with the range determined from the estimated object by a normalized correlation method. Theoretical derivations and simulation results are verified with experimental data of a bar target taken from a 3D FLASH LADAR system in a laboratory environment. Additionally, among other factors, range separation estimation variance is a function of two LADAR design parameters (range sampling interval and transmitted pulse-width), which can be optimized using the expected range resolution between two point sources. Using both CRB theory and an unbiased estimator, an investigation is accomplished that finds the optimal pulse-width for several range sampling scenarios using a range resolution metric
