    A fast algorithm for vision-based hand gesture recognition for robot control

    We propose a fast algorithm for automatically recognizing a limited set of gestures from hand images for a robot control application. Hand gesture recognition is a challenging problem in its general form. We consider a fixed set of manual commands and a reasonably structured environment, and develop a simple, yet effective, procedure for gesture recognition. Our approach contains steps for segmenting the hand region, locating the fingers, and finally classifying the gesture. The algorithm is invariant to translation, rotation, and scale of the hand. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique on real imagery

    The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have enabled recent progress of self-driving vehicles. However, the dependence on 3D object models and their annotations collected and owned by individual companies has become a major problem for the development of new algorithms. This thesis proposes an approach of directly using graphics models created from open-source datasets as the virtual representation of real-world objects. This approach uses Machine Learning techniques to extract 3D feature points and to create annotations from graphics models for the recognition of dynamic objects, such as cars, and for the verification of stationary and variable objects, such as buildings and trees. Moreover, it generates heat maps for the elimination of stationary/variable objects in real-time images before working on the recognition of dynamic objects. The proposed approach helps to bridge the gap between the virtual and physical worlds and to facilitate the development of new algorithms for self-driving vehicles

    Using Prior Knowledge for Verification and Elimination of Stationary and Variable Objects in Real-time Images

    With the evolving technologies in the autonomous vehicle industry, now it has become possible for automobile passengers to sit relaxed instead of driving the car. Technologies like object detection, object identification, and image segmentation have enabled an autonomous car to identify and detect an object on the road in order to drive safely. While an autonomous car drives by itself on the road, the types of objects surrounding the car can be dynamic (e.g., cars and pedestrians), stationary (e.g., buildings and benches), and variable (e.g., trees) depending on if the location or shape of an object changes or not. Different from the existing image-based approaches to detect and recognize objects in the scene, in this research 3D virtual world is employed to verify and eliminate stationary and variable objects to allow the autonomous car to focus on dynamic objects that may cause danger to its driving. This methodology takes advantage of prior knowledge of stationary and variable objects presented in a virtual city and verifies their existence in a real-time scene by matching keypoints between the virtual and real objects. In case of a stationary or variable object that does not exist in the virtual world due to incomplete pre-existing information, this method uses machine learning for object detection. Verified objects are then removed from the real-time image with a combined algorithm using contour detection and class activation map (CAM), which helps to enhance the efficiency and accuracy when recognizing moving objects

    Environmental mobile robot based on artificial intelligence and visual perception for weed elimination

    This research presents a new editing design for the pioneer p3-dx mobile robot by adding a mechanical gripper for eliminating the weed and a digital camera for capturing the image of the field. Also, a wireless kit that makes control on the motor's gripper is envisaged. This work consists of two parts. The theoretical part contains a program to read the image and discover the weed coordinates which will be sent to the path planning software to discover the locations of weed, green plant and sick plant. These positions are sent then to the mobile robot navigation software. Then the wireless signal is sent to the gripper. The experimental part is represented as a digital camera that takes an image of the agricultural field, and then sends it to the computer for processing. After that the weeds coordinates are sent to the mobile robots by mobile robot navigation software. Next, the wireless signal is sent to the wireless kit controlling the motor gripper by the computer interface program; the first trial on the agricultural field shows that the mobile robot can discriminate the green plant, from weed and sick plant and can take the right decision with respect to treatment or elimination. The experimental work shows that the environmental mobile robot can detect successfully the weed, sick plant and the hale plant. The mobile robot also travels from base to the target point represented by the weed and sick plants in the optimum path. The experimental work also shows that the environmental mobile robot can eliminate the weed and cure the sick plants in a correctly way
