    Reliability analysis of triple modular redundancy system with spare

    Hardware redundant fault-tolerant systems and the different design approaches are discussed. The reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems is usually done under permanent fault conditions. With statistical data suggesting that up to 90% of system failures are caused by intermittent faults, the reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems must concentrate more on this class of faults. In this work, a reconfigurable Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with spare system that differentiates between permanent and intermittent faults has been built. The reconfiguration process of this system depends on both the current status of its modules and their history. Based on this, a different approach for reliability analysis under intermittent fault conditions using Markov models is presented. This approach shows a much higher system reliability compared to other redundant and non-redundant configurations

    Redundant VoD Streaming Service in a Private Cloud: Availability Modeling and Sensitivity Analysis

    For several years cloud computing has been generating considerable debate and interest within IT corporations. Since cloud computing environments provide storage and processing systems that are adaptable, efficient, and straightforward, thereby enabling rapid infrastructure modifications to be made according to constantly varying workloads, organizations of every size and type are migrating to web-based cloud supported solutions. Due to the advantages of the pay-per-use model and scalability factors, current video on demand (VoD) streaming services rely heavily on cloud infrastructures to offer a large variety of multimedia content. Recent well documented failure events in commercial VoD services have demonstrated the fundamental importance of maintaining high availability in cloud computing infrastructures, and hierarchical modeling has proved to be a useful tool for evaluating the availability of complex systems and services. This paper presents an availability model for a video streaming service deployed in a private cloud environment which includes redundancy mechanisms in the infrastructure. Differential sensitivity analysis was applied to identify and rank the critical components of the system with respect to service availability. The results demonstrate that such a modeling strategy combined with differential sensitivity analysis can be an attractive methodology for identifying which components should be supported with redundancy in order to consciously increase system dependability

    Reliability estimation of second life battery system power electronic topologies for grid frequency response applications

    This paper is part of a project which aims to research the opportunities for the re-use of batteries after their primary use in low and ultra low carbon vehicles on the electricity grid system. One potential revenue stream is to provide primary/secondary/high frequency response to National Grid through market mechanisms via DNO's or Energy service providers. Some commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS) already exist on the grid system, but these tend to use costly new or high performance batteries. Second life batteries should be available at lower cost than new batteries but reliability becomes an important issue as individual batteries may suffer from degraded performance or failure. Therefore converter topology design could be used to influence the overall system reliability. A detailed reliability calculation of different single phase battery-to-grid converter interfacing schemes is presented. A suitable converter topology for robust and reliable BESS is recommended

    As the Department of Defense (DOD) deploys renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) to reduce fossil fuel consumption, microgrids are being evaluated as one way to generate and deliver reliable electric power to stationary and mobile military units. Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) microgrid components are a viable cost-effective option to setup stand-alone microgrid systems to support mobile military units and help drive the transition to a more sustainable yet energy-resilient military. Reliability and resilience are key parameters in determining the effectiveness of microgrids in supporting military missions. Although in the past few years many researchers have presented reliability and resilience models of various complexity, experimental measurements and model validation are not available in the literature for mobile COTS microgrids. The goal of this thesis research is to experimentally assess the reliability and resilience of stand-alone, mobile microgrids that can be carried by one or two individuals and can be easily assembled in the field in support of operations in locations where utility power is not available. Utilizing COTS DERs including batteries, PV arrays and power converters, three different standalone microgrid architectures were designed, analyzed, and tested in the laboratory.     Study and Design of Inter-Range Instrumentation Group Time Code B Synchronization of IEC 61850 Sampled Values

    Distribution substations are an important part of a chain which delivers energy from power production to customers. They transform the voltage level from transmission levels, usually 35kV and up, to distribution levels ranging between 600 and 35000 V. Recent developments in the instrument transformer field have been toward low-power solutions which use digital measurement values called sampled values in place of analog voltages and currents in substations. The IEC 61850-9-2 standard and its implementation guideline 9-2 LE by the UCA international users group define an interface for sampled values. This interface is used between an IED and LPIT. The main requirement of using sampled values is accurate time synchronization in order to prevent phase misalignment resulting in unnecessary protection function tripping. 9-2 LE defines two methods for synchronization: 1PPS and PTP. Today, PTP is widely used in the western markets, but due to costs associated with PTP-capable GPS clocks and Ethernet switches as well as vendor inoperability problems, some markets are hesitant to take into use. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a solution to this problem: use IRIG-B as a synchronization method in a PTP grandmaster. This paper discusses the differences between these two time synchronization topologies, associated costs, disturbance handling, accuracy and it also discusses the design of IRIG-B to PTP conversion done in a bay-level device. The device acts as a PTP grandmaster but the source comes from an IRIG-B clock instead of a GPS PTP grandmaster clock. The results shown in this thesis demonstrate that using IRIG-B as a main or redundant source in synchronization of sampled values is a more cost-effective option, especially if the station is to be retrofitted with sampled values configuration.
