    Multiple robot co-ordination using particle swarm optimisation and bacteria foraging algorithm

    The use of multiple robots to accomplish a task is certainly preferable over the use of specialised individual robots. A major problem with individual specialized robots is the idle-time, which can be reduced by the use of multiple general robots, therefore making the process economical. In case of infrequent tasks, unlike the ones like assembly line, the use of dedicated robots is not cost-effective. In such cases, multiple robots become essential. This work involves path-planning and co-ordination between multiple mobile agents in a static-obstacle environment. Multiple small robots (swarms) can work together to accomplish the designated tasks that are difficult or impossible for a single robot to accomplish. Here Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bacteria Foraging Algorithm (BFA) have been used for coordination and path-planning of the robots. PSO is used for global path planning of all the robotic agents in the workspace. The calculated paths of the robots are further optimized using a localised BFA optimization technique. The problem considered in this project is coordination of multiple mobile agents in a predefined environment using multiple small mobile robots. This work demonstrates the use of a combinatorial PSO algorithm with a novel local search enhanced by the use of BFA to help in efficient path planning limiting the chances of PSO getting trapped in the local optima.     Obstacle Avoidance Scheme Based Elite Opposition Bat Algorithm for Unmanned Ground Vehicles

    Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) are intelligent vehicles that operate in an obstacle environment without an onboard human operator but can be controlled autonomously using an obstacle avoidance system or by a human operator from a remote location. In this research, an obstacle avoidance scheme-based elite opposition bat algorithm (EOBA) for UGVs was developed. The obstacle avoidance system comprises a simulation map, a perception system for obstacle detection, and the implementation of EOBA for generating an optimal collision-free path that led the UGV to the goal location. Three distance thresholds of 0.1 m, 0.2 m, and 0.3 m was used in the obstacle detection stage to determine the optimal distance threshold for obstacle avoidance. The performance of the obstacle avoidance scheme was compared with that of bat algorithm (BA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques. The simulation results show that the distance threshold of 0.3 m is the optimal threshold for obstacle avoidance provided that the size of the obstacle does not exceed the size of the UGV. The EOBA based scheme when compared with BA and PSO schemes obtained an average percentage reduction of 21.82% in terms of path length and 60% in terms of time taken to reach the target destination.     Past, present and future of path-planning algorithms for mobile robot navigation in dynamic environments

    Mobile robots have been making a significant contribution to the advancement of many sectors including automation of mining, space, surveillance, military, health, agriculture and many more. Safe and efficient navigation is a fundamental requirement of mobile robots, thus, the demand for advanced algorithms rapidly increased. Mobile robot navigation encompasses the following four requirements: perception, localization, path-planning and motion control. Among those, path-planning is a vital part of a fast, secure operation. During the last couple of decades, many path-planning algorithms were developed. Despite most of the mobile robot applications being in dynamic environments, the number of algorithms capable of navigating robots in dynamic environments is limited. This paper presents a qualitative comparative study of the up-to-date mobile robot path-planning methods capable of navigating robots in dynamic environments. The paper discusses both classical and heuristic methods including artificial potential field, genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic, neural networks, artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization, ant-colony and Agoraphilic algorithm. The general advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. Furthermore, the commonly used state-of-the-art methods are critically analyzed based on six performance criteria: algorithm's ability to navigate in dynamically cluttered areas, moving goal hunting ability, object tracking ability, object path prediction ability, incorporating the obstacle velocity in the decision, validation by simulation and experimentation. This investigation benefits researchers in choosing suitable path-planning methods for different applications as well as identifying gaps in this field. © 2020 IEEE

    A Systematic Literature Review of Path-Planning Strategies for Robot Navigation in Unknown Environment

    The Many industries, including ports, space, surveillance, military, medicine and agriculture have benefited greatly from mobile robot technology.  An autonomous mobile robot navigates in situations that are both static and dynamic. As a result, robotics experts have proposed a range of strategies. Perception, localization, path planning, and motion control are all required for mobile robot navigation. However, Path planning is a critical component of a quick and secure navigation. Over the previous few decades, many path-planning algorithms have been developed. Despite the fact that the majority of mobile robot applications take place in static environments, there is a scarcity of algorithms capable of guiding robots in dynamic contexts. This review compares qualitatively mobile robot path-planning systems capable of navigating robots in static and dynamic situations. Artificial potential fields, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, neural networks, particle swarm optimization, artificial bee colonies, bacterial foraging optimization, and ant-colony are all discussed in the paper. Each method's application domain, navigation technique and validation context are discussed and commonly utilized cutting-edge methods are analyzed. This research will help researchers choose appropriate path-planning approaches for various applications including robotic cranes at the sea ports as well as discover gaps for optimization

    Intelligent Control and Path Planning of Multiple Mobile Robots Using Hybrid Ai Techniques

    This work reports the problem of intelligent control and path planning of multiple mobile robots. Soft computing methods, based on three main approaches i.e. 1) Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm, 2) Radial Basis Function Network and 3) Bees Algorithm are presented. Initially, Bacterial foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) with constant step size is analyzed for the navigation of mobile robots. Then the step size has been made adaptive to develop an Adaptive Bacterial Foraging Optimization (ABFO) controller. Further, another controller using radial basis function neural network has been developed for the mobile robot navigation. Number of training patterns are intended to train the RBFN controller for different conditions arises during the navigation. Moreover, Bees Algorithm has been used for the path planning of the mobile robots in unknown environments. A new fitness function has been used to perform the essential navigational tasks effectively and efficiently. In addition to the selected standalone approaches, hybrid models are also proposed to improve the ability of independent navigation. Five hybrid models have been presented and analyzed for navigation of one, two and four mobile robots in various scenarios. Comparisons have been made for the distance travelled and time taken by the robots in simulation and real time. Further, all the proposed approaches are found capable of solving the basic issues of path planning for mobile robots while doing navigation. The controllers have been designed, developed and analyzed for various situations analogous to possible applications of the robots in indoor environments. Computer simulations are presented for all cases with single and multiple mobile robots in different environments to show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers. Furthermore, various exercises have been performed, analyzed and compared in physical environments to exhibit the effectiveness of the developed controllers

    Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms.     A generalized laser simulator algorithm for optimal path planning in constraints environment

    Path planning plays a vital role in autonomous mobile robot navigation, and it has thus become one of the most studied areas in robotics. Path planning refers to a robot's search for a collision-free and optimal path from a start point to a predefined goal position in a given environment. This research focuses on developing a novel path planning algorithm, called Generalized Laser Simulator (GLS), to solve the path planning problem of mobile robots in a constrained environment. This approach allows finding the path for a mobile robot while avoiding obstacles, searching for a goal, considering some constraints and finding an optimal path during the robot movement in both known and unknown environments. The feasible path is determined between the start and goal positions by generating a wave of points in all directions towards the goal point with adhering to constraints. A simulation study employing the proposed approach is applied to the grid map settings to determine a collision-free path from the start to goal positions. First, the grid mapping of the robot's workspace environment is constructed, and then the borders of the workspace environment are detected based on the new proposed function. This function guides the robot to move toward the desired goal. Two concepts have been implemented to find the best candidate point to move next: minimum distance to goal and maximum index distance to the boundary, integrated by negative probability to sort out the most preferred point for the robot trajectory determination. In order to construct an optimal collision-free path, an optimization step was included to find out the minimum distance within the candidate points that have been determined by GLS while adhering to particular constraint's rules and avoiding obstacles. The proposed algorithm will switch its working pattern based on the goal minimum and boundary maximum index distances. For static obstacle avoidance, the boundaries of the obstacle(s) are considered borders of the environment. However, the algorithm detects obstacles as a new border in dynamic obstacles once it occurs in front of the GLS waves. The proposed method has been tested in several test environments with different degrees of complexity. Twenty different arbitrary environments are categorized into four: Simple, complex, narrow, and maze, with five test environments in each. The results demonstrated that the proposed method could generate an optimal collision-free path. Moreover, the proposed algorithm result are compared to some common algorithms such as the A* algorithm, Probabilistic Road Map, RRT, Bi-directional RRT, and Laser Simulator algorithm to demonstrate its effectiveness. The suggested algorithm outperforms the competition in terms of improving path cost, smoothness, and search time. A statistical test was used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm over the compared methods. The GLS is 7.8 and 5.5 times faster than A* and LS, respectively, generating a path 1.2 and 1.5 times shorter than A* and LS. The mean value of the path cost achieved by the proposed approach is 4% and 15% lower than PRM and RRT, respectively. The mean path cost generated by the LS algorithm, on the other hand, is 14% higher than that generated by the PRM. Finally, to verify the performance of the developed method for generating a collision-free path, experimental studies were carried out using an existing WMR platform in labs and roads. The experimental work investigates complete autonomous WMR path planning in the lab and road environments using live video streaming. The local maps were built using data from live video streaming s by real-time image processing to detect the segments of the lab and road environments. The image processing includes several operations to apply GLS on the prepared local map. The proposed algorithm generates the path within the prepared local map to find the path between start-to-goal positions to avoid obstacles and adhere to constraints. The experimental test shows that the proposed method can generate the shortest path and best smooth trajectory from start to goal points in comparison with the laser simulator

    A review: On path planning strategies for navigation of mobile robot

    This paper presents the rigorous study of mobile robot navigation techniques used so far. The step by step investigations of classical and reactive approaches are made here to understand the development of path planning strategies in various environmental conditions and to identify research gap. The classical approaches such as cell decomposition (CD), roadmap approach (RA), artificial potential field (APF); reactive approaches such as genetic algorithm (GA), fuzzy logic (FL), neural network (NN), firefly algorithm (FA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), bacterial foraging optimization (BFO), artificial bee colony (ABC), cuckoo search (CS), shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) and other miscellaneous algorithms (OMA) are considered for study. The navigation over static and dynamic condition is analyzed (for single and multiple robot systems) and it has been observed that the reactive approaches are more robust and perform well in all terrain when compared to classical approaches. It is also observed that the reactive approaches are used to improve the performance of the classical approaches as a hybrid algorithm. Hence, reactive approaches are more popular and widely used for path planning of mobile robot. The paper concludes with tabular data and charts comparing the frequency of individual navigational strategies which can be used for specific application in robotics
