    Scouting algorithms for field robots using triangular mesh maps

    Labor shortage has prompted researchers to develop robot platforms for agriculture field scouting tasks. Sensor-based automatic topographic mapping and scouting algorithms for rough and large unstructured environments were presented. It involves moving an image sensor to collect terrain and other information and concomitantly construct a terrain map in the working field. In this work, a triangular mesh map was first used to represent the rough field surface and plan exploring strategies. A 3D image sensor model was used to simulate collection of field elevation information.A two-stage exploring policy was used to plan the next best viewpoint by considering both the distance and elevation change in the cost function. A greedy exploration algorithm based on the energy cost function was developed; the energy cost function not only considers the traveling distance, but also includes energy required to change elevation and the rolling resistance of the terrain. An information-based exploration policy was developed to choose the next best viewpoint to maximise the information gain and minimize the energy consumption. In a partially known environment, the information gain was estimated by applying the ray tracing algorithm. The two-part scouting algorithm was developed to address the field sampling problem; the coverage algorithm identifies a reasonable coverage path to traverse sampling points, while the dynamic path planning algorithm determines an optimal path between two adjacent sampling points.The developed algorithms were validated in two agricultural fields and three virtual fields by simulation. Greedy exploration policy, based on energy consumption outperformed other pattern methods in energy, time, and travel distance in the first 80% of the exploration task. The exploration strategy, which incorporated the energy consumption and the information gain with a ray tracing algorithm using a coarse map, showed an advantage over other policies in terms of the total energy consumption and the path length by at least 6%. For scouting algorithms, line sweeping methods require less energy and a shorter distance than the potential function method

    Indoor GPS-denied Context Based SLAM Aided Guidance for Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems

Efficient exploration of structured environments requires that the robot utilize region-specific exploration strategies and coordinate with search other agents. This paper details the exploration and guidance system of a multi-quadrotor unmanned aerial system (UAS) capable of exploring cluttered indoor areas without relying on any external aides. Specifically, a graph-based frontier search algorithm which is aided by an onboard Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) system is developed and flight tested. A technique is developed in for segmenting an indoor office-like environment into regions and to utilize the SLAM map to conduct specific activities in these regions. A goal-directed exploration strategy is created building on existing hybrid deliberative-reactive approaches to exploration. An obstacle avoidance and guidance system is implemented to ensure that the vehicle explores maximum indoor area while avoiding obstacles. The environment is explored and regions are segmented by detecting rooms and hallways which expedites the search.     System of Terrain Analysis, Energy Estimation and Path Planning for Planetary Exploration by Robot Teams

    NASA’s long term plans involve a return to manned moon missions, and eventually sending humans to mars. The focus of this project is the use of autonomous mobile robotics to enhance these endeavors. This research details the creation of a system of terrain classification, energy of traversal estimation and low cost path planning for teams of inexpensive and potentially expendable robots. The first stage of this project was the creation of a model which estimates the energy requirements of the traversal of varying terrain types for a six wheel rocker-bogie rover. The wheel/soil interaction model uses Shibly’s modified Bekker equations and incorporates a new simplified rocker-bogie model for estimating wheel loads. In all but a single trial the relative energy requirements for each soil type were correctly predicted by the model. A path planner for complete coverage intended to minimize energy consumption was designed and tested. It accepts as input terrain maps detailing the energy consumption required to move to each adjacent location. Exploration is performed via a cost function which determines the robot’s next move. This system was successfully tested for multiple robots by means of a shared exploration map. At peak efficiency, the energy consumed by our path planner was only 56% that used by the best case back and forth coverage pattern. After performing a sensitivity analysis of Shibly’s equations to determine which soil parameters most affected energy consumption, a neural network terrain classifier was designed and tested. The terrain classifier defines all traversable terrain as one of three soil types and then assigns an assumed set of soil parameters. The classifier performed well over all, but had some difficulty distinguishing large rocks from sand. This work presents a system which successfully classifies terrain imagery into one of three soil types, assesses the energy requirements of terrain traversal for these soil types and plans efficient paths of complete coverage for the imaged area. While there are further efforts that can be made in all areas, the work achieves its stated goals

    A Decentralized Architecture for Active Sensor Networks

    This thesis is concerned with the Distributed Information Gathering (DIG) problem in which a Sensor Network is tasked with building a common representation of environment. The problem is motivated by the advantages offered by distributed autonomous sensing systems and the challenges they present. The focus of this study is on Macro Sensor Networks, characterized by platform mobility, heterogeneous teams, and long mission duration. The system under consideration may consist of an arbitrary number of mobile autonomous robots, stationary sensor platforms, and human operators, all linked in a network. This work describes a comprehensive framework called Active Sensor Network (ASN) which addresses the tasks of information fusion, decistion making, system configuration, and user interaction. The main design objectives are scalability with the number of robotic platforms, maximum flexibility in implementation and deployment, and robustness to component and communication failure. The framework is described from three complementary points of view: architecture, algorithms, and implementation. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of the ASN architecture. Its design follows three guiding principles: decentralization, modularity, and locality of interactions. These principles are applied to all aspects of the architecture and the framework in general. To achieve flexibility, the design approach emphasizes interactions between components rather than the definition of the components themselves. The architecture specifies a small set of interfaces sufficient to implement a wide range of information gathering systems. In the area of algorithms, this thesis builds on the earlier work on Decentralized Data Fusion (DDF) and its extension to information-theoretic decistion making. It presents the Bayesian Decentralized Data Fusion (BDDF) algorithm formulated for environment features represented by a general probability density function. Several specific representations are also considered: Gaussian, discrete, and the Certainty Grid map. Well known algorithms for these representations are shown to implement various aspects of the Bayesian framework. As part of the ASN implementation, a practical indoor sensor network has been developed and tested. Two series of experiments were conducted, utilizing two types of environment representation: 1) point features with Gaussian position uncertainty and 2) Certainty Grid maps. The network was operational for several days at a time, with individual platforms coming on and off-line. On several occasions, the network consisted of 39 software components. The lessons learned during the system's development may be applicable to other heterogeneous distributed systems with data-intensive algorithms

    Tactile mapping of harsh, constrained environments, with an application to oil wells

[110]-114).This work develops a practical approach to explore rough environments when time is critical. The harsh environmental conditions prevent the use of range, force/torque or tactile sensors. A representative case is the mapping of oil wells. In these conditions, tactile exploration is appealing. In this work, the environment is mapped tactilely, by a manipulator whose only sensors are joint encoders. The robot autonomously explores the environment collecting few, sparse tactile data and monitoring its free movements. These data are used to create a model of the surface in real time and to choose the robot's movements to reduce the mapping time. First, the approach is described and its feasibility demonstrated. Real-time impedance control allows a robust robot movement and the detection of the surface using a manipulator mounting only position sensors. A representation based on geometric primitives describes the surface using the few, sparse data available. The robustness of the method is tested against surface roughness and different surrounding fluids. Joint backlash strongly affect the robot's precision, and it is inevitable because of the thermal expansion in the joints. Here, a new strategy is developed to compensate for backlash positioning errors, by simultaneously identifying the surface and the backlash values. Second, an exploration strategy to map a constraining environment with a manipulator is developed. To maximize the use of the acquired data, this work proposes a hybrid approach involving both workspace and configuration space. The amount of knowledge of the environment is evaluated with an approach based on information theory, and the robot's movements are chosen to maximize the expected increase of such knowledge. Since the robot only possesses position sensors, the location along the robot where contact with the surface occurs cannot be determined with certainty. Thus a new approach is developed, that evaluates the probability of contact with specific parts of the robot and classifies and uses the data according to the different types of contact.     Mutual information-based gradient-ascent control for distributed robotics

We begin with the fundamental problem of deploying a single ground robot equipped with a range sensor and tasked to build an occupancy grid map. The desired explorative behaviors of the robot for occupancy grid mapping highlight the correlation between the information content and the spatial realization of the robot's range measurements. We prove that any occupancy grid controller tasked to maximize a mutual information reward function is eventually attracted to unexplored space, i.e., areas of highest uncertainty. We show that mutual information encodes geometric relationships that are fundamental to robot control and yields geometrically relevant reward surfaces on which robots can navigate. Taking inspiration from geometric-based approaches to distributed robot coordination, we show that many multi-robot inference tasks can be cast in terms of an optimization problem. This optimization problem defines the task of minimizing the conditional entropy associated with the robots' inferred beliefs of the environment, which is equivalent to maximizing the mutual information between the environment state and the robots' next joint observation. Given simple robot dynamics and few probabilistic assumptions, none of which involve Gaussianity, we derive a gradientascent solution approach to these optimization problems that is convergent between sensor observations and locally optimal. More formally, we invoke LaSalle's Invariance Principle to prove that, given enough time between consecutive joint observations, robots following the gradient of mutual information will converge to goal positions that locally maximize the expected information gain resulting from the next observation. We show that the algorithmic implementation of the generalized gradient-ascent controller is not readily distributed among multiple robots, and thus sample-based methods are introduced to distributively approximate the likelihoods of the robots' joint observations. Not only are the involved non-parametric representations compatible with any type of Bayesian filter, but the computational complexities of the resulting decentralized controllers are independent with respect to the number of robots. Concerning the distributed approximations, we give two example consensus-based algorithms that run on an undirected network graph. The first consensus-based algorithm approximates discrete measurement probabilities, while the second approximates continuous likelihood distributions. We show that these anytime approximations provably converge to the correct values on a static and connected network graph without knowledge of the number of robots in the network or the corresponding graph's topology. Lastly, we incorporate the resulting consensus-based algorithms into both a hardware system and a simulation environment to allow for decentralized controller evaluation under non-ideal network settings. For the hardware experiments, the task is to infer the state of a bounded, planar environment by deploying five quadrotor flying robots with simulated sensors in both indoor and outdoor settings. For the numerical simulations, Monte Carlo-based analyses are performed for 100 robots, where each robot is simulated on an independent computer node within a computer cluster system. Simulations are also performed for 1000 robots using a single workstation computer equipped with a multicore GPU-enabled graphics card.
