Digital Preservation Services : State of the Art Analysis
Research report funded by the DC-NET project. An overview of the state of the art in service provision for digital preservation and curation. Its focus is on the areas where bridging the gaps is needed between e-Infrastructures and efficient and forward-looking digital preservation services. Based on a desktop study and a rapid analysis of some 190 currently available tools and services for digital preservation, the deliverable provides a high-level view on the range of instruments currently on offer to support various functions within a preservation system.European Commission, FP7peer-reviewe
A Tool for Supporting the Co-Evolution of Enterprise Architecture Meta-models and Models
Enterprise architecture models capture the concepts and relationships that together describe the essentials of the various enterprise domains. This model of the enterprise is tightly coupled to a domain-specific modeling language that defines the formalisms for creating and updating such model. These languages are described as meta-models by the model-driven engineering field. Results from surveys on enterprise architecture tool analysis showed a lack of support concerning the co-evolution of enterprise architecture meta-model and models. This paper presents a tool that automates enterprise architecture models co-evolution according to a set of meta-model changes. A Portuguese governmental organization used and validated the tool using observational, analytical and descriptive evaluation methods
Digital maturity variables and their impact on the enterprise architecture layers
This study examines the variables of digital maturity of companies. The framework for enterprise architectures Archimate 3.0 is used to compare the variables. The variables are assigned to the six layers of architecture: Strategy, Business Environment, Applications, Technology, Physical and Implementation and Migration. On the basis of a literature overview, 15 “digital maturity models” with a total of 147 variables are analyzed. The databases Scopus, EBSCO – Business Source Premier and ProQuest are used for this purpose
Migrating to Cloud-Native Architectures Using Microservices: An Experience Report
Migration to the cloud has been a popular topic in industry and academia in
recent years. Despite many benefits that the cloud presents, such as high
availability and scalability, most of the on-premise application architectures
are not ready to fully exploit the benefits of this environment, and adapting
them to this environment is a non-trivial task. Microservices have appeared
recently as novel architectural styles that are native to the cloud. These
cloud-native architectures can facilitate migrating on-premise architectures to
fully benefit from the cloud environments because non-functional attributes,
like scalability, are inherent in this style. The existing approaches on cloud
migration does not mostly consider cloud-native architectures as their
first-class citizens. As a result, the final product may not meet its primary
drivers for migration. In this paper, we intend to report our experience and
lessons learned in an ongoing project on migrating a monolithic on-premise
software architecture to microservices. We concluded that microservices is not
a one-fit-all solution as it introduces new complexities to the system, and
many factors, such as distribution complexities, should be considered before
adopting this style. However, if adopted in a context that needs high
flexibility in terms of scalability and availability, it can deliver its
promised benefits
StackInsights: Cognitive Learning for Hybrid Cloud Readiness
Hybrid cloud is an integrated cloud computing environment utilizing a mix of
public cloud, private cloud, and on-premise traditional IT infrastructures.
Workload awareness, defined as a detailed full range understanding of each
individual workload, is essential in implementing the hybrid cloud. While it is
critical to perform an accurate analysis to determine which workloads are
appropriate for on-premise deployment versus which workloads can be migrated to
a cloud off-premise, the assessment is mainly performed by rule or policy based
approaches. In this paper, we introduce StackInsights, a novel cognitive system
to automatically analyze and predict the cloud readiness of workloads for an
enterprise. Our system harnesses the critical metrics across the entire stack:
1) infrastructure metrics, 2) data relevance metrics, and 3) application
taxonomy, to identify workloads that have characteristics of a) low sensitivity
with respect to business security, criticality and compliance, and b) low
response time requirements and access patterns. Since the capture of the data
relevance metrics involves an intrusive and in-depth scanning of the content of
storage objects, a machine learning model is applied to perform the business
relevance classification by learning from the meta level metrics harnessed
across stack. In contrast to traditional methods, StackInsights significantly
reduces the total time for hybrid cloud readiness assessment by orders of
magnitude
Technical Report on Deploying a highly secured OpenStack Cloud Infrastructure using BradStack as a Case Study
Cloud computing has emerged as a popular paradigm and an attractive model for
providing a reliable distributed computing model.it is increasing attracting
huge attention both in academic research and industrial initiatives. Cloud
deployments are paramount for institution and organizations of all scales. The
availability of a flexible, free open source cloud platform designed with no
propriety software and the ability of its integration with legacy systems and
third-party applications are fundamental. Open stack is a free and opensource
software released under the terms of Apache license with a fragmented and
distributed architecture making it highly flexible. This project was initiated
and aimed at designing a secured cloud infrastructure called BradStack, which
is built on OpenStack in the Computing Laboratory at the University of
Bradford. In this report, we present and discuss the steps required in
deploying a secured BradStack Multi-node cloud infrastructure and conducting
Penetration testing on OpenStack Services to validate the effectiveness of the
security controls on the BradStack platform. This report serves as a practical
guideline, focusing on security and practical infrastructure related issues. It
also serves as a reference for institutions looking at the possibilities of
implementing a secured cloud solution.Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures
