Sketching-out virtual humans: A smart interface for human modelling and animation
In this paper, we present a fast and intuitive interface for sketching out
3D virtual humans and animation. The user draws stick figure key frames first and
chooses one for “fleshing-out” with freehand body contours. The system
automatically constructs a plausible 3D skin surface from the rendered figure, and
maps it onto the posed stick figures to produce the 3D character animation. A
“creative model-based method” is developed, which performs a human perception
process to generate 3D human bodies of various body sizes, shapes and fat
distributions. In this approach, an anatomical 3D generic model has been created with
three distinct layers: skeleton, fat tissue, and skin. It can be transformed sequentially
through rigid morphing, fatness morphing, and surface fitting to match the original
2D sketch. An auto-beautification function is also offered to regularise the 3D
asymmetrical bodies from users’ imperfect figure sketches. Our current system
delivers character animation in various forms, including articulated figure animation,
3D mesh model animation, 2D contour figure animation, and even 2D NPR animation
with personalised drawing styles. The system has been formally tested by various
users on Tablet PC. After minimal training, even a beginner can create vivid virtual
humans and animate them within minutes
Gradual Certified Programming in Coq
Expressive static typing disciplines are a powerful way to achieve
high-quality software. However, the adoption cost of such techniques should not
be under-estimated. Just like gradual typing allows for a smooth transition
from dynamically-typed to statically-typed programs, it seems desirable to
support a gradual path to certified programming. We explore gradual certified
programming in Coq, providing the possibility to postpone the proofs of
selected properties, and to check "at runtime" whether the properties actually
hold. Casts can be integrated with the implicit coercion mechanism of Coq to
support implicit cast insertion a la gradual typing. Additionally, when
extracting Coq functions to mainstream languages, our encoding of casts
supports lifting assumed properties into runtime checks. Much to our surprise,
it is not necessary to extend Coq in any way to support gradual certified
programming. A simple mix of type classes and axioms makes it possible to bring
gradual certified programming to Coq in a straightforward manner.Comment: DLS'15 final version, Proceedings of the ACM Dynamic Languages

Goods and services tax (GST) on construction capital cost and housing property price
Good and Service Tax (GST) an indirect broad-based conswnpti.on tax. Following with the implementation of GST in Malaysia on 1st April 2015, it is suspected that the construction capital cost and housing property price will increase accordingly. This study is aim to review the GST effect associated on construction capital cost and it influences towards housing developer and housing property price. Additionally, this study highlights what was the developer point of view on the GST given to them and also the housing price further proposes initiatives to the housing developers. Argument of GST effect is useful for the public administrators so that to re-consider the rate of GST and also beneficial to the construction parties to account with the GST implementation. As conclusion, this study review that GST do give an impact towards the construction capital cost, housing developer and housing property price in terms of knock-on effect
Effect of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and surfactant concentration on viscosity characteristic
This is a preliminary study on the viscosity characteristics of polyalphaolefin (PAO)- based γ-Fe2O3 under zero magnetic fields. By varying the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 with different concentrations were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The effect of this factor on the viscosity characteristic of γ-Fe2O3 (< 30 nm) was investigated on the basic of a series of rheological measurement. The use of oleic acid (OA) as a coating agent and surfactant was also investigated by varying its concentration. The results show the concentration of MNPs and the amount of OA has obvious effect on viscosity characteristics of PAO-based γ-Fe2O3. In the case of comparison between the concentrations of MNPs, higher concentration of MNPs increased the viscosity of the PAO-based γ-Fe2O3 and exhibit nearly Newtonian behavior. The large amount of OA also exhibits the increment on viscosity characteristic of MNPs. The experimental data were compared with the Bingham and Casson model and the results revealed that the rheology of the polyalphaolefin (PAO)-based γ-Fe2O3 fitted the Casson model better

Topological model for machining of parts with complex shapes
Complex shapes are widely used to design products in several industries such
as aeronautics, automotive and domestic appliances. Several variations of their
curvatures and orientations generate difficulties during their manufacturing or
the machining of dies used in moulding, injection and forging. Analysis of
several parts highlights two levels of difficulties between three types of
shapes: prismatic parts with simple geometrical shapes, aeronautic structure
parts composed of several shallow pockets and forging dies composed of several
deep cavities which often contain protrusions. This paper mainly concerns High
Speed Machining (HSM) of these dies which represent the highest complexity
level because of the shapes' geometry and their topology. Five axes HSM is
generally required for such complex shaped parts but 3 axes machining can be
sufficient for dies. Evolutions in HSM CAM software and machine tools lead to
an important increase in time for machining preparation. Analysis stages of the
CAD model particularly induce this time increase which is required for a wise
choice of cutting tools and machining strategies. Assistance modules for
prismatic parts machining features identification in CAD models are widely
implemented in CAM software. In spite of the last CAM evolutions, these kinds
of CAM modules are undeveloped for aeronautical structure parts and forging
dies. Development of new CAM modules for the extraction of relevant machining
areas as well as the definition of the topological relations between these
areas must make it possible for the machining assistant to reduce the machining
preparation time. In this paper, a model developed for the description of
complex shape parts topology is presented. It is based on machining areas
extracted for the construction of geometrical features starting from CAD models
of the parts. As topology is described in order to assist machining assistant
during machining process generation, the difficulties associated with tasks he
carried out are analyzed at first. The topological model presented after is
based on the basic geometrical features extracted. Topological relations which
represent the framework of the model are defined between the basic geometrical
features which are gathered afterwards in macro-features. Approach used for the
identification of these macro-features is also presented in this paper.
Detailed application on the construction of the topological model of forging
dies is presented in the last part of the paper
Digitally interpreting traditional folk crafts
The cultural heritage preservation requires that objects persist throughout time to continue to communicate an intended meaning. The necessity of computer-based preservation and interpretation of traditional folk crafts is validated by the decreasing number of masters, fading technologies, and crafts losing economic ground. We present a long-term applied research project on the development of a mathematical basis, software tools, and technology for application of desktop or personal fabrication using compact, cheap, and environmentally friendly fabrication devices, including '3D printers', in traditional crafts. We illustrate the properties of this new modeling and fabrication system using several case studies involving the digital capture of traditional objects and craft patterns, which we also reuse in modern designs. The test application areas for the development are traditional crafts from different cultural backgrounds, namely Japanese lacquer ware and Norwegian carvings. Our project includes modeling existing artifacts, Web presentations of the models, automation of the models fabrication, and the experimental manufacturing of new designs and forms
Efficient moving point handling for incremental 3D manifold reconstruction
As incremental Structure from Motion algorithms become effective, a good
sparse point cloud representing the map of the scene becomes available
frame-by-frame. From the 3D Delaunay triangulation of these points,
state-of-the-art algorithms build a manifold rough model of the scene. These
algorithms integrate incrementally new points to the 3D reconstruction only if
their position estimate does not change. Indeed, whenever a point moves in a 3D
Delaunay triangulation, for instance because its estimation gets refined, a set
of tetrahedra have to be removed and replaced with new ones to maintain the
Delaunay property; the management of the manifold reconstruction becomes thus
complex and it entails a potentially big overhead. In this paper we investigate
different approaches and we propose an efficient policy to deal with moving
points in the manifold estimation process. We tested our approach with four
sequences of the KITTI dataset and we show the effectiveness of our proposal in
comparison with state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: Accepted in International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing
