C to O-O Translation: Beyond the Easy Stuff
Can we reuse some of the huge code-base developed in C to take advantage of
modern programming language features such as type safety, object-orientation,
and contracts? This paper presents a source-to-source translation of C code
into Eiffel, a modern object-oriented programming language, and the supporting
tool C2Eif. The translation is completely automatic and supports the entire C
language (ANSI, as well as many GNU C Compiler extensions, through CIL) as used
in practice, including its usage of native system libraries and inlined
assembly code. Our experiments show that C2Eif can handle C applications and
libraries of significant size (such as vim and libgsl), as well as challenging
benchmarks such as the GCC torture tests. The produced Eiffel code is
functionally equivalent to the original C code, and takes advantage of some of
Eiffel's object-oriented features to produce safe and easy-to-debug
translations
Language-based multimedia information retrieval
This paper describes various methods and approaches for language-based multimedia information retrieval, which have been developed in the projects POP-EYE and OLIVE and which will be developed further in the MUMIS project. All of these project aim at supporting automated indexing of video material by use of human language technologies. Thus, in contrast to image or sound-based retrieval methods, where both the query language and the indexing methods build on non-linguistic data, these methods attempt to exploit advanced text retrieval technologies for the retrieval of non-textual material. While POP-EYE was building on subtitles or captions as the prime language key for disclosing video fragments, OLIVE is making use of speech recognition to automatically derive transcriptions of the sound tracks, generating time-coded linguistic elements which then serve as the basis for text-based retrieval functionality
Bounded Expectations: Resource Analysis for Probabilistic Programs
This paper presents a new static analysis for deriving upper bounds on the
expected resource consumption of probabilistic programs. The analysis is fully
automatic and derives symbolic bounds that are multivariate polynomials of the
inputs. The new technique combines manual state-of-the-art reasoning techniques
for probabilistic programs with an effective method for automatic
resource-bound analysis of deterministic programs. It can be seen as both, an
extension of automatic amortized resource analysis (AARA) to probabilistic
programs and an automation of manual reasoning for probabilistic programs that
is based on weakest preconditions. As a result, bound inference can be reduced
to off-the-shelf LP solving in many cases and automatically-derived bounds can
be interactively extended with standard program logics if the automation fails.
Building on existing work, the soundness of the analysis is proved with respect
to an operational semantics that is based on Markov decision processes. The
effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated with a prototype implementation
that is used to automatically analyze 39 challenging probabilistic programs and
randomized algorithms. Experimental results indicate that the derived constant
factors in the bounds are very precise and even optimal for many programs
CU2CL: A CUDA-to-OpenCL Translator for Multi- and Many-core Architectures
The use of graphics processing units (GPUs) in
high-performance parallel computing continues to become more
prevalent, often as part of a heterogeneous system. For years,
CUDA has been the de facto programming environment for
nearly all general-purpose GPU (GPGPU) applications. In spite
of this, the framework is available only on NVIDIA GPUs,
traditionally requiring reimplementation in other frameworks
in order to utilize additional multi- or many-core devices.
On the other hand, OpenCL provides an open and vendorneutral
programming environment and runtime system. With
implementations available for CPUs, GPUs, and other types of
accelerators, OpenCL therefore holds the promise of a âwrite
once, run anywhereâ ecosystem for heterogeneous computing.
Given the many similarities between CUDA and OpenCL,
manually porting a CUDA application to OpenCL is typically
straightforward, albeit tedious and error-prone. In response
to this issue, we created CU2CL, an automated CUDA-to-
OpenCL source-to-source translator that possesses a novel design
and clever reuse of the Clang compiler framework. Currently,
the CU2CL translator covers the primary constructs found in
CUDA runtime API, and we have successfully translated many
applications from the CUDA SDK and Rodinia benchmark suite.
The performance of our automatically translated applications via
CU2CL is on par with their manually ported countparts
Instrumenting self-modifying code
Adding small code snippets at key points to existing code fragments is called
instrumentation. It is an established technique to debug certain otherwise hard
to solve faults, such as memory management issues and data races. Dynamic
instrumentation can already be used to analyse code which is loaded or even
generated at run time.With the advent of environments such as the Java Virtual
Machine with optimizing Just-In-Time compilers, a new obstacle arises:
self-modifying code. In order to instrument this kind of code correctly, one
must be able to detect modifications and adapt the instrumentation code
accordingly, preferably without incurring a high penalty speedwise. In this
paper we propose an innovative technique that uses the hardware page protection
mechanism of modern processors to detect such modifications. We also show how
an instrumentor can adapt the instrumented version depending on the kind of

A new module system for prolog
It is now widely accepted that separating programs into modules has proven very useful in program development and maintenance. While many Prolog implementations include useful module systems, we feel that these systems can be improved in a number of ways, such as, for example, being more amenable to effective global analysis and allowing sepĂĄrate compilation or sensible creation of standalone executables. We discuss a number of issues related to the design of such an improved module system for Prolog. Based on this, we present the choices made in the Ciao module system, which has been designed to meet a number of objectives: allowing sepĂĄrate compilation, extensibility in features and in syntax, amenability to modular global analysis, etc

Translation and human-computer interaction
This paper seeks to characterise translation as a form of human-computer interaction. The evolution of translator-computer interaction is explored and the challenges and benefits are enunciated. The concept of cognitive ergonomics is drawn on to argue for a more caring and inclusive approach towards the translator by developers of translation technology. A case is also made for wider acceptance by the translation community of the benefits of the technology at their disposal and for more humanistic research on the impact of technology on the translator, the translation profession and the translation process
