    Get PDF
This paper describes a novel method for automatically segmenting and recognizing the various information fields present on a bank cheque. The uniqueness of our approach lies in the fact that it doesn't necessitate any prior information and requires minimum human intervention. The extraction of segmented fields is accomplished by means of a connectivity based approach. For the recognition part, we have proposed four innovative features, namely; entropy, energy, aspect ratio and average fuzzy membership values. Though no particular feature is pertinent in itself but a combination of these is used for differentiating between the fields. Finally, a fuzzy neural network is trained to identify the desired fields. The system performance is quite promising on a large dataset of real and synthetic cheque images

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced Cheque Truncation System (CTS) for Indian banks in order to reduce the time required for physical movement of cheques between the clearance departments. However, other processes including database entry and verification are carried out manually. The proposal here is to eliminate the manual intervention by extracting the attributes from the input cheque image and updating the database automatically which significantly would reduce the time lapse on filling up the data into the database. Automatic database updating also contributes to provide secure data retrieval through querying system for verification of attributes by concerned banks. In this paper, a novel approach to extract printed attributes from Indian Bank cheque images based on their template structures is proposed. Template structures are determined by extracting the MICR code from the input cheque image. Important attributes region is segmented, and the printed data is recognized. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method

Computer analysis of composite documents with non-uniform background.

The motivation behind most of the applications of off-line text recognition is to convert data from conventional media into electronic media. Such applications are bank cheques, security documents and form processing. In this dissertation a document analysis system is presented to transfer gray level composite documents with complex backgrounds and poor illumination into electronic format that is suitable for efficient storage, retrieval and interpretation. The preprocessing stage for the document analysis system requires the conversion of a paper-based document to a digital bit-map representation after optical scanning followed by techniques of thresholding, skew detection, page segmentation and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The system as a whole operates in a pipeline fashion where each stage or process passes its output to the next stage. The success of each stage guarantees that the operation of the system as a whole with no failures that may reduce the character recognition rate. By designing this document analysis system a new local bi-level threshold selection technique was developed for gray level composite document images with non-uniform background. The algorithm uses statistical and textural feature measures to obtain a feature vector for each pixel from a window of size (2 n + 1) x (2n + 1), where n ≥ 1. These features provide a local understanding of pixels from their neighbourhoods making it easier to classify each pixel into its proper class. A Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network is then used to classify each pixel value in the image. The results of thresholding are then passed to the block segmentation stage. The block segmentation technique developed is a feature-based method that uses a Neural Network classifier to automatically segment and classify the image contents into text and halftone images. Finally, the text blocks are passed into a Character Recognition (CR) system to transfer characters into an editable text format and the recognition results were compared to those obtained from a commercial OCR. The OCR system implemented uses pixel distribution as features extracted from different zones of the characters. A correlation classifier is used to recognize the characters. For the application of cheque processing, this system was used to read the special numerals of the optical barcode found in bank cheques. The OCR system uses a fuzzy descriptive feature extraction method with a correlation classifier to recognize these special numerals, which identify the bank institute and provides personal information about the account holder. The new local thresholding scheme was tested on a variety of composite document images with complex backgrounds. The results were very good compared to the results from commercial OCR software. This proposed thresholding technique is not limited to a specific application. It can be used on a variety of document images with complex backgrounds and can be implemented in any document analysis system provided that sufficient training is performed.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In this thesis, we present an automatic recognition system for CENPARMI off-line Arabic handwritten dates collected from Arabic Nationalities. This system consists of modules that segment and recognize an Arabic handwritten date image. First, in the segmentation module, the system explicitly segments a date image into a sequence of basic constituents or segments. As a part of this module, a special sub-module was developed to over-segment any constituent that is a candidate for a touching pair. The proposed touching pair segmentation submodule has been tested on three different datasets of handwritten numeral touching pairs: The CENPARMI Arabic [6], Urdu, and Dari [24] datasets. The final recognition rates of 92.22%, 90.43%, and 86.10% were achieved for Arabic, Urdu and Dari, respectively. Afterwards, the segments are preprocessed and sent to the classification module. In this stage, feature vectors are extracted and then recognized by an isolated numeral classifier. This recognition system has been tested in five different isolated numeral databases: The CENPARMI Arabic [6], Urdu, Dari [24], Farsi, and Pashto databases with overall recognition rates of 97.29% 97.75%, 97.75%, 97.95% and 98.36%, respectively. Finally, a date post processing module is developed to improve the recognition results. This post processing module is used in two different stages. First, in the date stage, to verify that the segmentation/recognition output represents a valid date image and it chooses the best date format to be assigned to this image. Second, in the sub-field stage, to evaluate the values for the date three parts: day, month and year. Experiments on two different databases of Arabic handwritten dates: CENPARMI Arabic database [6] and the CENPARMI Arabic Bank Cheques database [7], show encouraging results with overall recognition rates of 85.05% and 66.49, respectively

Only secured and conducive environment void of robbery, kidnapping, fake currency and all forms of insurgencies will foster production and distribution of goods, investment and saving that enhance national economic growth and development. This is a mirage in a country generally believed and tagged the giant of African; Nigeria. Crime, in whatever name or nomenclature, has a significant negative impact on the welfare and economy prosperities of our society. The urge to get rich promotes Crime like armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom and production of counterfeit banknotes to mention but a few. Innocent people have suffered psychological distress, fear, anger, depression, physical harm, financial loss and in most cases untimely death during the operations by these hoodlums. Banks, Cash-In-Transit Vehicle, and ATM points are often robbed by gangs in search for paper currency. Kidnappers as well demand for paper currency as ransom while some other gangs are involved in the production of counterfeit banknotes so as to enrich themselves no minding the negative effect on the nation’s economy.  The banknotes collected during the operations by the hoodlums are taken to banks. Yet, the banks will not detect or recognize any of these notes which attest to the fact that our system lacks check and balance. The system is very porous without a recourse to this era of technology when machine is trained to do virtually everything for our convenience. Currency as an entity has a unique identification number. The identification number is an alphanumeric currency issuance of about 10 digits comprises two (2) capital letters and eight (8) numbers usually positioned at a strategic location on either front or back of the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes. It is a reliable and intelligent system developed to track banknotes unique identifiers numbers- serial numbers, in order to control financial related crimes. In this paper, an attempt is made to develop off-line recognition strategies for the isolated Handwritten English character(A to Z) and (0 to 9). Challenges in handwritten character recognition wholly lie in the variation and distortion of handwritten characters, since different people may use different style of handwritten, and direction to draw the same shape of the characters of their known script. The paper provides a review on the process of character recognition using neural network. Character recognition methods are listed under two main headlines. The Offline methods use the static images properties. The Offline methods are further divided into four methods, which are clustering, Feature Extraction, Pattern Matching and Artificial Neural Network. The Online methods are subdivided into k-NN classifier and direction based algorithm. Character preprocessing is used binarization, thresolding and segmentation method. Neural network based method improves the character recognition. The proposed method is based on the feed forward back propogation method to classify the characters. The ANN is trained using the Back Propogation algorithm. In the proposed system, English nue-merical letter is represented by binary numbers that are assume as input and fed to an ANN.
