    DicionĂĄrio-aberto: a source of resources for the portuguese language processing

We will briefly present its history, explaining how we got here. Then, we will describe the resources already available to download and use, followed by the discussion on the resources that are being currently developed

    In 2013, a conference entitled Planning non-existent dictionaries was held at the University of Lisbon. Scholars and lexicographers were invited to present and submit for discussion their research and practices, focusing on aspects that are traditionally perceived as shortcomings by dictionary makers and dictionary users. This book contains a collection of papers divided in three sections. The first section is devoted to heritage dictionaries, referring to lexicographic projects that aim to register all the documented words in a language, particularly those that can be described as early linguistic evidence. The second section is devoted to dictionaries for special purposes and it gathers papers that describe innovative lexicographic projects. The last section in this volume provides an overview of contemporary e- lexicography projects.publishe

    In this article we present a catalogue of conceptual relationships in which each relationship is defined formally in terms of its properties and the nature of the conceptual classes involved. By making explicit the conceptual relationships of the catalogue using the standard ontology editor Protégé we should be able to retrieve conceptual knowledge in an onomasiological way using the Queries function of the editor. In the final part of the article we present a sample query taken from the analysis of the terminology of finished ceramic products in order to show how information about relationships can be retrieved

    Corpus exploitation for terminological purposes: a proposed term extraction process for bilingual specialised dictionary elaboration

    The method and outcomes described in this research are part of a wider project aimed at creating a specialised, bilingual dictionary on industrial ceramics. One of the key stages in the elaboration of such a work is the term extraction process, since it determines which terminological units are part of the domain and should thus be included as dictionary entries. This paper deals with a proposal that is aimed at accurately detecting the units of specialised knowledge that constitute the terminology of a domain from a raw, bilingual corpus that was compiled ad hoc. This proposal is presented in the form of a series of stages in which prospective terms are progressively retrieved, identified and analysed with the concordance software program WordSmith Tools (WST) 5.0. In the method proposed here, the WST application WordList first generates monolexical frequency lists which are compared with the lists generated by the tool KeyWords, providing saliency data. Afterwards, Mutual Information lists provided once again by Wordlist constitute the first approach to the combinatorial aspect of terms. Subsequently, the WST application Concord, with its different options, provides further evidence on the way prospective terms collocate and combine as well as on their contextual nature, thus completing the term extraction process. This methodology, always combined with the terminographer’s “manual” work, observation and intuition, has proved to be effective for the dictionary under development

    The Role of E-Vocabularies in the Description and Retrieval of Digital Educational Resources

    Vocabularies are linguistic resources that make it possible to access knowledge through words. They can constitute a mechanism to identify, describe, explore, and access all the digital resources with informational content pertaining to a specific knowledge domain. In this regard, they play a key role as systems for the representation and organization of knowledge in environments in which content is created and used in a collaborative and free manner, as is the case of social wikis and blogs on the Internet or educational content in e-learning environments. In e-learning environments, electronic vocabularies (e-vocabularies) constitute a mechanism for conceptual representation of digital educational resources. They enable human and software agents either to locate and interpret resource content in large digital repositories, including the web, or to use them (vocabularies) as an educational resource by itself to learn a discipline terminology. This review article describes what e-vocabularies are, what they are like, how they are used, how they work, and what they contribute to the retrieval of digital educational resources. The goal is to contribute to a clearer view of the concepts which we regard as crucial to understand e-vocabularies and their use in the field of e-learning to describe and retrieve digital educational resources
