    Hybrid FLUTE/DASH video delivery over mobile wireless networks

    This paper describes how FLUTE (File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport) and DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) can be used to provide mobile video streaming services over broadcast wireless networks. FLUTE is a multicast protocol for multimedia file download. In this proposal, the protocol is adapted to provide video streaming services in crowded environments. Thus, video is delivered over a single connection to all viewers, reducing the traffic in the network. FLUTE incorporates an AL-FEC (Application Layered Forward Error Correction) mechanism in order to improve the reliability of the broadcast communication channel. For streaming applications, AL-FEC improves the relationship between the PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the received video and the bandwidth allocated to the broadcast connection. The AL-FEC hereby presented applies simple unequal error protection schemes to favor the download of key frames. Furthermore, the proposal is based on the same video segmentation mechanism as DASH and therefore, clients can connect to a DASH repository to repair errors in the segments.     Bandwidth efficient multi-station wireless streaming based on complete complementary sequences

    Data streaming from multiple base stations to a client is recognized as a robust technique for multimedia streaming. However the resulting transmission in parallel over wireless channels poses serious challenges, especially multiple access interference, multipath fading, noise effects and synchronization. Spread spectrum techniques seem the obvious choice to mitigate these effects, but at the cost of increased bandwidth requirements. This paper proposes a solution that exploits complete complementary spectrum spreading and data compression techniques jointly to resolve the communication challenges whilst ensuring efficient use of spectrum and acceptable bit error rate. Our proposed spreading scheme reduces the required transmission bandwidth by exploiting correlation among information present at multiple base stations. Results obtained show 1.75 Mchip/sec (or 25%) reduction in transmission rate, with only up to 6 dB loss in frequency-selective channel compared to a straightforward solution based solely on complete complementary spectrum spreading

    Reliable Multicast Transport for Heterogeneous Mobile IP environment using Cross-Layer Information

    Reliable multicast transport architecture designed for heterogeneous mobile IP environment using cross-layer information for enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) and seamless handover is discussed. In particular, application-specific reliable multicast retransmission schemes are proposed, which are aimed to minimize the protocol overhead taking into account behaviour of mobile receivers (loss of connectivity and handover) and the specific application requirements for reliable delivery (such as carousel, one-to-many download and streaming delivery combined with recording). The proposed localized retransmission strategies are flexible configured for tree-based multicast transport. Cross layer interactions in order to enhance reliable transport and support seamless handover is discussed considering IEEE 802.21 media independent handover mechanisms. The implementation is based on Linux IPv6 environment. Simulations in ns2 focusing on the benefits of the proposed multicast retransmission schemes for particular application scenarios are presented

    Modeling a distributed Heterogeneous Communication System using Parametric Timed Automata

    In this report, we study the application of the Parametric Timed Automata(PTA) tool to a concrete case of a distributed Heterogeneous Communication System (HCS). The description and requirements of HCS are presented and the system modeling is explained carefully. The system models are developed in UPPAAL and validated by different test cases. Part of the system models are then converted into parametric timed automata and the schedulability checking is run to produce the schedulability regions

    Media fusion and future TV: Examining multi-screen TV convergence in Singapore

    This study examines Singapore's national media blueprint and industry stakeholders' coping strategies in response to multi-screen TV development. The findings show Singapore muti-screen TV development is still at a nascent stage after launching Media Fushion and FutureTV plans in mid 2009. The policymakers play a key role to follow national media blueprint to unify the inter-industry and cross-country collaboration. TV operators and telcos are found to remediate themselves by harnessing the power of internet and mobile technologies for content innovation and distribution. To tackle the complicated convergent issues in multi-screen TV industry, this study proposes to separately regulate the technology-neutral platforms and diverse audiovisual content.
