    Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion. Collected Works, Volume 5

    This ļ¬fth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different ļ¬elds of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modiļ¬ed Proportional Conļ¬‚ict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classiļ¬ers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identiļ¬cation of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classiļ¬cation. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classiļ¬cation, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well

    On the Utility of Representation Learning Algorithms for Myoelectric Interfacing

    Electrical activity produced by muscles during voluntary movement is a reflection of the firing patterns of relevant motor neurons and, by extension, the latent motor intent driving the movement. Once transduced via electromyography (EMG) and converted into digital form, this activity can be processed to provide an estimate of the original motor intent and is as such a feasible basis for non-invasive efferent neural interfacing. EMG-based motor intent decoding has so far received the most attention in the field of upper-limb prosthetics, where alternative means of interfacing are scarce and the utility of better control apparent. Whereas myoelectric prostheses have been available since the 1960s, available EMG control interfaces still lag behind the mechanical capabilities of the artificial limbs they are intended to steerā€”a gap at least partially due to limitations in current methods for translating EMG into appropriate motion commands. As the relationship between EMG signals and concurrent effector kinematics is highly non-linear and apparently stochastic, finding ways to accurately extract and combine relevant information from across electrode sites is still an active area of inquiry.This dissertation comprises an introduction and eight papers that explore issues afflicting the status quo of myoelectric decoding and possible solutions, all related through their use of learning algorithms and deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Paper I presents a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for multi-label movement decoding of high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Inspired by the successful use of CNNs in Paper I and the work of others, Paper II presents a method for automatic design of CNN architectures for use in myocontrol. Paper III introduces an ANN architecture with an appertaining training framework from which simultaneous and proportional control emerges. Paper Iv introduce a dataset of HD-sEMG signals for use with learning algorithms. Paper v applies a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model to decode finger forces from intramuscular EMG. Paper vI introduces a Transformer model for myoelectric interfacing that do not need additional training data to function with previously unseen users. Paper vII compares the performance of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to that of classical pattern recognition algorithms. Lastly, paper vIII describes a framework for synthesizing EMG from multi-articulate gestures intended to reduce training burden

    Autonomous Radar-based Gait Monitoring System

    Features related to gait are fundamental metrics of human motion [1]. Human gait has been shown to be a valuable and feasible clinical marker to determine the risk of physical and mental functional decline [2], [3]. Technologies that detect changes in peopleā€™s gait patterns, especially older adults, could support the detection, evaluation, and monitoring of parameters related to changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty. Gait assessment has the potential to be leveraged as a clinical measurement as it is not limited to a specific health care discipline and is a consistent and sensitive test [4]. A wireless technology that uses electromagnetic waves (i.e., radar) to continually measure gait parameters at home or in a hospital without a clinicianā€™s participation has been proposed as a suitable solution [3], [5]. This approach is based on the interaction between electromagnetic waves with humans and how their bodies impact the surrounding and scattered wireless signals. Since this approach uses wireless waves, people do not need to wear or carry a device on their bodies. Additionally, an electromagnetic wave wireless sensor has no privacy issues because there is no video-based camera. This thesis presents the design and testing of a radar-based contactless system that can monitor peopleā€™s gait patterns and recognize their activities in a range of indoor environments frequently and accurately. In this thesis, the use of commercially available radars for gait monitoring is investigated, which offers opportunities to implement unobtrusive and contactless gait monitoring and activity recognition. A novel fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction algorithm that enables an individualā€™s spatiotemporal gait parameter extraction at each gait cycle using a single FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar is proposed. The proposed system detects changes in gait that may be the signs of changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty, particularly for older adults in individualā€™s homes, retirement homes and long-term care facilities retirement homes. One of the straightforward applications for gait monitoring using radars is in corridors and hallways, which are commonly available in most residential homes, retirement, and long-term care homes. However, walls in the hallway have a strong ā€œclutterā€ impact, creating multipath due to the wide beam of commercially available radar antennas. The multipath reflections could result in an inaccurate gait measurement because gait extraction algorithms employ the assumption that the maximum reflected signals come from the torso of the walking person (rather than indirect reflections or multipath) [6]. To address the challenges of hallway gait monitoring, two approaches were used: (1) a novel signal processing method and (2) modifying the radar antenna using a hyperbolic lens. For the first approach, a novel algorithm based on radar signal processing, unsupervised learning, and a subject detection, association and tracking method is proposed. This proposed algorithm could be paired with any type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or single-input multiple-output (SIMO) FMCW radar to capture human gait in a highly cluttered environment without needing radar antenna alteration. The algorithm functionality was validated by capturing spatiotemporal gait values (e.g., speed, step points, step time, step length, and step count) of people walking in a hallway. The preliminary results demonstrate the promising potential of the algorithm to accurately monitor gait in hallways, which increases opportunities for its applications in institutional and home environments. For the second approach, an in-package hyperbola-based lens antenna was designed that can be integrated with a radar module package empowered by the fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction method. The system functionality was successfully validated by capturing the spatiotemporal gait values of people walking in a hallway filled with metallic cabinets. The results achieved in this work pave the way to explore the use of stand-alone radar-based sensors in long hallways for day-to-day long-term monitoring of gait parameters of older adults or other populations. The possibility of the coexistence of multiple walking subjects is high, especially in long-term care facilities where other people, including older adults, might need assistance during walking. GaitRite and wearables are not able to assess multiple peopleā€™s gait at the same time using only one device [7], [8]. In this thesis, a novel radar-based algorithm is proposed that is capable of tracking multiple people or extracting walking speed of a participant with the coexistence of other people. To address the problem of tracking and monitoring multiple walking people in a cluttered environment, a novel iterative framework based on unsupervised learning and advanced signal processing was developed and tested to analyze the reflected radio signals and extract walking movements and trajectories in a hallway environment. Advanced algorithms were developed to remove multipath effects or ghosts created due to the interaction between walking subjects and stationary objects, to identify and separate reflected signals of two participants walking at a close distance, and to track multiple subjects over time. This method allows the extraction of walking speed in multiple closely-spaced subjects simultaneously, which is distinct from previous approaches where the speed of only one subject was obtained. The proposed multiple-people gait monitoring was assessed with 22 participants who participated in a bedrest (BR) study conducted at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The system functionality also was assessed for in-home applications. In this regard, a cloud-based system is proposed for non-contact, real-time recognition and monitoring of physical activities and walking periods within a domestic environment. The proposed system employs standalone Internet of Things (IoT)-based millimeter wave radar devices and deep learning models to enable autonomous, free-living activity recognition and gait analysis. Range-Doppler maps generated from a dataset of real-life in-home activities are used to train deep learning models. The performance of several deep learning models was evaluated based on accuracy and prediction time, with the gated recurrent network (GRU) model selected for real-time deployment due to its balance of speed and accuracy compared to 2D Convolutional Neural Network Long Short-Term Memory (2D-CNNLSTM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models. In addition to recognizing and differentiating various activities and walking periods, the system also records the subjectā€™s activity level over time, washroom use frequency, sleep/sedentary/active/out-of-home durations, current state, and gait parameters. Importantly, the system maintains privacy by not requiring the subject to wear or carry any additional devices

    Determination of Key Parameters Influencing Dislodgeable Foliar Pesticide Residues (DFR)

    Pesticides have a crucial role to play in assuring food security for an increasing world population. Therefore, a risk assessment should be carried out for plant protection products (PPPs), covering both dietary and non-dietary routes and all possible exposure scenarios. Non-dietary risk assessments for workers, residents and bystanders mandate estimating the amount of pesticide residue transferred from plant foliage to the skin or clothes, known as dislodgeable foliar residues (DFR), along with the pesticide's half-lives (DT50). However, both values were considered outdated and conservative by the industry and the public during the consultations and research (EFSA, 2014c; Kluxen et al., 2021). Moreover, the DFR data in the literature are described as insufficiently reliable, limited, and encompass considerable statistical uncertainties. Thus, new data generation would allow for a more reasonable default value that reflects a more realistic exposure estimate and does not compromise human safety. To this end, the findings of this thesis explore some of the factors that affect DFR using a newly DFR developed lab method. This would enable more data generation and possibly refining of the PPP non-dietary risk assessment. Possible correlations between dietary and DFR residue decline were investigated considering data from 177 dietary residue trials along with 56 DFR trials from outdoor studies on the same crops, besides residue decline data available in the Pesticide Properties Database (PPDB). The residue studies followed the non- normal distribution, and the comparison between DT50 of both types of residues for most active substances revealed a statistical higher DT50 mean value of the dietary residue compared to the DFRs. Furthermore, the numerical back-transformed DT50 data for all tested active substances proved to be higher in an average of 5 to 23% in the dietary studies than in the DFR studies. Therefore, a DT50 value from dietary residue studies could act as a conservative surrogate DT50 for DFR, which could help determine the length of DFR studies and benefit both the agrochemical industry and the regulatory bodies in supporting non-dietary pesticide risk assessment. The current work described a newly developed laboratory method for quantifying DFR. The laboratory method reflected the available field DFR methodology. It involved controlled application of droplets to the leaves and validation of the wash-off process used to completely remove the residue from the leaf surface before the analytical quantification using liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry. The aforementioned DFR technique was used to investigate the effect of leaf texture, formulation and co-formulants on the magnitude of DFR using the fungicide difenoconazole (DFZ) 10% (w/v). DFZ emulsifiable concentrate (EC 10%) and a wettable powder (WP 10%) with and without adjuvants on tomato, French bean and oilseed rape were tested. The findings showed that a comparable DFR% was observed from the WP and EC formulations on most sampled crop leaves, ranging from (82-74%) on French beans and (31-74%) on oilseed rape except for tomatoes (60-39%). No significant effect of adjuvants addition was observed for either formulation except when mixing TEHP (0.1% w/v) to the EC 10% on French bean, which resulted in a DFR recovery % decrease from 82 to 74%. Changing the solvent system or the co-formulants in a DFZ EC formulation did not statistically affect the DFR recovery % in all crops. Still, a slight numerical increase in the DFR %, in that case, was observed on tomatoes from 60 to 65% and from 31% to 37% on oilseed rape. It was associated with low dynamic surface tension (DST) of the formulation, which was the reason for this enhanced uptake and low DFR. The findings of this thesis also shed light on the effect of leaf texture on DFR, which showed a significant difference among all tested crops highlighting the importance of this factor. Moreover, grouping different leaves/crops based on their roughness (i.e., hairy, or waxy) proved to be relevant and applicable as hairy leaves were shown to have higher DFZ DFR (ranges from 82% to 52%) than waxy leaves (31%). However, an accurate classification approach would better involve the coverage degree and types of trichomes in different hairy leaves, as hairy leaves may act differently based on these characteristics. In conclusion, this work has demonstrated the importance of the newly laboratory developed DFR method and its application in studying the factors that could influence DFR to allow for refining the PPP non-dietary risk assessment

    Measuring the impact of COVID-19 on hospital care pathways

    Care pathways in hospitals around the world reported significant disruption during the recent COVID-19 pandemic but measuring the actual impact is more problematic. Process mining can be useful for hospital management to measure the conformance of real-life care to what might be considered normal operations. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that process mining can be used to investigate process changes associated with complex disruptive events. We studied perturbations to accident and emergency (A &E) and maternity pathways in a UK public hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-incidentally the hospital had implemented a Command Centre approach for patient-flow management affording an opportunity to study both the planned improvement and the disruption due to the pandemic. Our study proposes and demonstrates a method for measuring and investigating the impact of such planned and unplanned disruptions affecting hospital care pathways. We found that during the pandemic, both A &E and maternity pathways had measurable reductions in the mean length of stay and a measurable drop in the percentage of pathways conforming to normative models. There were no distinctive patterns of monthly mean values of length of stay nor conformance throughout the phases of the installation of the hospitalā€™s new Command Centre approach. Due to a deficit in the available A &E data, the findings for A &E pathways could not be interpreted

    Computational and human-based methods for knowledge discovery over knowledge graphs

    The modern world has evolved, accompanied by the huge exploitation of data and information. Daily, increasing volumes of data from various sources and formats are stored, resulting in a challenging strategy to manage and integrate them to discover new knowledge. The appropriate use of data in various sectors of society, such as education, healthcare, e-commerce, and industry, provides advantages for decision support in these areas. However, knowledge discovery becomes challenging since data may come from heterogeneous sources with important information hidden. Thus, new approaches that adapt to the new challenges of knowledge discovery in such heterogeneous data environments are required. The semantic web and knowledge graphs (KGs) are becoming increasingly relevant on the road to knowledge discovery. This thesis tackles the problem of knowledge discovery over KGs built from heterogeneous data sources. We provide a neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence system that integrates symbolic and sub-symbolic frameworks to exploit the semantics encoded in a KG and its structure. The symbolic system relies on existing approaches of deductive databases to make explicit, implicit knowledge encoded in a KG. The proposed deductive database DSDS can derive new statements to ego networks given an abstract target prediction. Thus, DSDS minimizes data sparsity in KGs. In addition, a sub-symbolic system relies on knowledge graph embedding (KGE) models. KGE models are commonly applied in the KG completion task to represent entities in a KG in a low-dimensional vector space. However, KGE models are known to suffer from data sparsity, and a symbolic system assists in overcoming this fact. The proposed approach discovers knowledge given a target prediction in a KG and extracts unknown implicit information related to the target prediction. As a proof of concept, we have implemented the neuro-symbolic system on top of a KG for lung cancer to predict polypharmacy treatment effectiveness. The symbolic system implements a deductive system to deduce pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions encoded in a set of rules through the Datalog program. Additionally, the sub-symbolic system predicts treatment effectiveness using a KGE model, which preserves the KG structure. An ablation study on the components of our approach is conducted, considering state-of-the-art KGE methods. The observed results provide evidence for the benefits of the neuro-symbolic integration of our approach, where the neuro-symbolic system for an abstract target prediction exhibits improved results. The enhancement of the results occurs because the symbolic system increases the prediction capacity of the sub-symbolic system. Moreover, the proposed neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence system in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is evaluated, demonstrating its effectiveness in determining relatedness among standards and analyzing their properties to detect unknown relations in the I4.0KG. The results achieved allow us to conclude that the proposed neuro-symbolic approach for an abstract target prediction improves the prediction capability of KGE models by minimizing data sparsity in KGs

    Managing distributed situation awareness in a team of agents

    The research presented in this thesis investigates the best ways to manage Distributed Situation Awareness (DSA) for a team of agents tasked to conduct search activity with limited resources (battery life, memory use, computational power, etc.). In the first part of the thesis, an algorithm to coordinate agents (e.g., UAVs) is developed. This is based on Delaunay triangulation with the aim of supporting efficient, adaptable, scalable, and predictable search. Results from simulation and physical experiments with UAVs show good performance in terms of resources utilisation, adaptability, scalability, and predictability of the developed method in comparison with the existing fixed-pattern, pseudorandom, and hybrid methods. The second aspect of the thesis employs Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) to define and manage DSA based on the information obtained from the agents' search activity. Algorithms and methods were developed to describe how agents update the BBN to model the systemā€™s DSA, predict plausible future states of the agentsā€™ search area, handle uncertainties, manage agentsā€™ beliefs (based on sensor differences), monitor agentsā€™ interactions, and maintains adaptable BBN for DSA management using structural learning. The evaluation uses environment situation information obtained from agentsā€™ sensors during search activity, and the results proved superior performance over well-known alternative methods in terms of situation prediction accuracy, uncertainty handling, and adaptability. Therefore, the thesisā€™s main contributions are (i) the development of a simple search planning algorithm that combines the strength of fixed-pattern and pseudorandom methods with resources utilisation, scalability, adaptability, and predictability features; (ii) a formal model of DSA using BBN that can be updated and learnt during the mission; (iii) investigation of the relationship between agents search coordination and DSA management
