    Aerated blast furnace slag filters for enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal from small wastewater treatment plants

    Rock filters (RF) are a promising alternative technology for natural wastewater treatment for upgrading WSP effluent. However, the application of RF in the removal of eutrophic nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, is very limited. Accordingly, the overall objective of this study was to develop a lowcost RF system for the purpose of enhanced nutrient removal from WSP effluents, which would be able to produce effluents which comply with the requirements of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) (911271lEEC) and suitable for small communities. Therefore, a combination system comprising a primary facultative pond and an aerated rock filter (ARF) system-either vertically or horizontally loaded-was investigated at the University of Leeds' experimental station at Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works, Bradford, UK. Blast furnace slag (BFS) and limestone were selected for use in the ARF system owing to their high potential for P removal and their low cost. This study involved three major qperiments: (1) a comparison of aerated vertical-flow and horizontal-flow limestone filters for nitrogen removal; (2) a comparison of aerated limestone + blast furnace slag (BFS) filter and aerated BFS filters for nitrogen and phosphorus removal; and (3) a comparison of vertical-flow and horizontal-flow BFS filters for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The vertical upward-flow ARF system was found to be superior to the horizontal-flow ARF system in terms of nitrogen removal, mostly thiough bacterial nitrification processes in both the aerated limestone and BFS filter studies. The BFS filter medium (whieh is low-cost) showed a much higher potential in removing phosphortls from pond effluent than the limestone medium. As a result, the combination of a vertical upward-flow ARF system and an economical and effective P-removal filter medium, such as BFS, was found to be an ideal optionfor the total nutrient removal of both nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. In parallel with these experiments, studies on the aerated BFS filter effective life and major in-filter phosphorus removal pathways were carried out. From the standard batch experiments of Pmax adsorption capacity of BFS, as well as six-month data collection of daily average P-removal, it was found that the effective life of the aerated BFS filter was 6.5 years. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectrometric analyses on the surface of BFS, particulates and sediment samples revealed that the apparent mechanisms of P-removal in the filter are adsorption on the amorphous oxide phase of the BFS surface and precipitation within the filter

    dissertationDespite the progress that has been made since the inception of the finite element method, the field of biomechanics has generally relied on software tools that were not specifically designed to target this particular area of application. Software designed specifically for the field of computational biomechanics does not appear to exist. To overcome this limitation, FEBio was developed, an acronym for “Finite Elements for Biomechanics”, which provided an open-source framework for developing finite element software that is tailored to the specific needs of the biomechanics and biophysics communities. The proposed work added an extendible framework to FEBio that greatly facilitates the implementation of novel features and provides an ideal platform for exploring novel computational approaches. This framework supports plugins, which simplify the process of adding new features even more since plugins can be developed independently from the main source code. Using this new framework, this work extended FEBio in two important areas of interest in biomechanics. First, as tetrahedral elements continue to be the preferred modeling primitive for representing complex geometries, several tetrahedral formulations were investigated in terms of their robustness and accuracy for solving problems in computational biomechanics. The focus was on the performance of quadratic tetrahedral formulations in large deformation contact analyses, as this is an important area of application in biomechanics. Second, the application of prestrain to computational models has been recognized as an important component in simulations of biological tissues in order to accurately predict the mechanical response. As this remains challenging to do in existing software packages, a general computational framework for applying prestrain was incorporated in the FEBio software. The work demonstrated via several examples how plugins greatly simplify the development of novel features. In addition, it showed that the quadratic tetrahedral formulations studied in this work are viable alternatives for contact analyses. Finally, it demonstrated the newly developed prestrain plugin and showed how it can be used in various applications of prestrain

    Large-scale Geometric Data Decomposition, Processing and Structured Mesh Generation

    Mesh generation is a fundamental and critical problem in geometric data modeling and processing. In most scientific and engineering tasks that involve numerical computations and simulations on 2D/3D regions or on curved geometric objects, discretizing or approximating the geometric data using a polygonal or polyhedral meshes is always the first step of the procedure. The quality of this tessellation often dictates the subsequent computation accuracy, efficiency, and numerical stability. When compared with unstructured meshes, the structured meshes are favored in many scientific/engineering tasks due to their good properties. However, generating high-quality structured mesh remains challenging, especially for complex or large-scale geometric data. In industrial Computer-aided Design/Engineering (CAD/CAE) pipelines, the geometry processing to create a desirable structural mesh of the complex model is the most costly step. This step is semi-manual, and often takes up to several weeks to finish. Several technical challenges remains unsolved in existing structured mesh generation techniques. This dissertation studies the effective generation of structural mesh on large and complex geometric data. We study a general geometric computation paradigm to solve this problem via model partitioning and divide-and-conquer. To apply effective divide-and-conquer, we study two key technical components: the shape decomposition in the divide stage, and the structured meshing in the conquer stage. We test our algorithm on vairous data set, the results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our framework. The comparisons also show our algorithm outperforms existing partitioning methods in final meshing quality. We also show our pipeline scales up efficiently on HPC environment

    Concurrent Multiscale Computing of Deformation Microstructure by Relaxation and Local Enrichment with Application to Single-Crystal Plasticity

    This paper is concerned with the effective modeling of deformation microstructures within a concurrent multiscale computing framework. We present a rigorous formulation of concurrent multiscale computing based on relaxation; we establish the connection between concurrent multiscale computing and enhanced-strain elements; and we illustrate the approach in an important area of application, namely, single-crystal plasticity, for which the explicit relaxation of the problem is derived analytically. This example demonstrates the vast effect of microstructure formation on the macroscopic behavior of the sample, e.g., on the force/travel curve of a rigid indentor. Thus, whereas the unrelaxed model results in an overly stiff response, the relaxed model exhibits a proper limit load, as expected. Our numerical examples additionally illustrate that ad hoc element enhancements, e.g., based on polynomial, trigonometric, or similar representations, are unlikely to result in any significant relaxation in general

    â„“_1-Based Construction of Polycube Maps from Complex Shapes

    Polycube maps of triangle meshes have proved useful in a wide range of applications, including texture mapping and hexahedral mesh generation. However, constructing either fully automatically or with limited user control a low-distortion polycube from a detailed surface remains challenging in practice. We propose a variational method for deforming an input triangle mesh into a polycube shape through minimization of the â„“_1-norm of the mesh normals, regularized via an as-rigid-as-possible volumetric distortion energy. Unlike previous work, our approach makes no assumption on the orientation, or on the presence of features in the input model. User-guided control over the resulting polycube map is also offered to increase design flexibility. We demonstrate the robustness, efficiency, and controllability of our method on a variety of examples, and explore applications in hexahedral remeshing and quadrangulation
