Pervasive Parallel And Distributed Computing In A Liberal Arts College Curriculum
We present a model for incorporating parallel and distributed computing (PDC) throughout an undergraduate CS curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to introduce students early to parallel and distributed computing topics and to expose students to these topics repeatedly in the context of a wide variety of CS courses. The key to our approach is the development of a required intermediate-level course that serves as a introduction to computer systems and parallel computing. It serves as a requirement for every CS major and minor and is a prerequisite to upper-level courses that expand on parallel and distributed computing topics in different contexts. With the addition of this new course, we are able to easily make room in upper-level courses to add and expand parallel and distributed computing topics. The goal of our curricular design is to ensure that every graduating CS major has exposure to parallel and distributed computing, with both a breadth and depth of coverage. Our curriculum is particularly designed for the constraints of a small liberal arts college, however, much of its ideas and its design are applicable to any undergraduate CS curriculum
Multimodal music information processing and retrieval: survey and future challenges
Towards improving the performance in various music information processing
tasks, recent studies exploit different modalities able to capture diverse
aspects of music. Such modalities include audio recordings, symbolic music
scores, mid-level representations, motion, and gestural data, video recordings,
editorial or cultural tags, lyrics and album cover arts. This paper critically
reviews the various approaches adopted in Music Information Processing and
Retrieval and highlights how multimodal algorithms can help Music Computing
applications. First, we categorize the related literature based on the
application they address. Subsequently, we analyze existing information fusion
approaches, and we conclude with the set of challenges that Music Information
Retrieval and Sound and Music Computing research communities should focus in
the next years

Changing Light: a plethora of digital tools as slides gasp their last?
The title 'Changing Light' reflects the enormous changeover from analogue slides to digital images, both a cultural shift and a physical shift down to the change in light from the smoky beams of dual slide projectors piercing the dark of a classroom, to the bright white classrooms of the digital age.
The evidence for the 'death of slides' has been mounting for a number of years and reported by visual resources curators in the US and the UK. In 2005 JISC funded AHDS Visual Arts to report on 'the effects of the digital image revolution on the UK arts education community'; the Association of Curators of Art and Design Images (ACADI), the Association of Art Historians (AAH), and the Art Libraries Society (ARLIS/UK & Ireland) contributed significantly to the Digital Picture initiative. However some of the issues highlighted by the final report are yet to be addressed such as provision of copyright-cleared digital images for use in education.
This paper considers what arts education stands to lose from the 'death of slides' in the context of digital images and the plethora of digital presentation tools. As well as a change in light, there is a change from the physical tangible slide technology to the virtual digital image and computing in the cloud
Autonomic Road Transport Support Systems
The work on Autonomic Road Transport Support (ARTS) presented here aims at
meeting the challenge of engineering autonomic behavior in Intelligent Transportation
Systems (ITS) by fusing research from the disciplines of traffic engineering
and autonomic computing. Ideas and techniques from leading edge artificial intelligence
research have been adapted for ITS over the last years. Examples include
adaptive control embedded in real time traffic control systems, heuristic algorithms
(e.g. in SAT-NAV systems), image processing and computer vision (e.g. in automated
surveillance interpretation). Autonomic computing which is inspired from the
biological example of the bodyâs autonomic nervous system is a more recent development.
It allows for a more efficient management of heterogeneous distributed
computing systems. In the area of computing, autonomic systems are endowed
with a number of properties that are generally referred to as self-X properties,
including self-configuration, self-healing, self-optimization, self-protection and more
generally self-management. Some isolated examples of autonomic properties such
as self-adaptation have found their way into ITS technology and have already proved
beneficial. This edited volume provides a comprehensive introduction to Autonomic
Road Transport Support (ARTS) and describes the development of ARTS systems. It
starts out with the visions, opportunities and challenges, then presents the foundations
of ARTS and the platforms and methods used and it closes with experiences
from real-world applications and prototypes of emerging applications. This makes
it suitable for researchers and practitioners in the fields of autonomic computing,
traffic and transport management and engineering, AI, and software engineering.

Transformation through research? The AC+erm Project and Electronic Records Management
The article focuses on the three-year project being undertaken by Northumbria University in Northumbria, England and funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (ANRH) named as AC+erm. The AC+erm project is a qualitative study composed of three main phases including a comprehensive Systematic Literature Review, an investigation of the three aspects of designing an architecture for electronic records management (ERM), and distribution of findings. The primary data from selected experts are gathered through the Delphi technique8, developed by the Rand Corp. in the U.S., to formulate an opinion on the research topic. Further, it provides short analysis of the issues associated with Web 2.0 and cloud computing technologies.

A new stage of computing technology at the beginning of the 21st Century links the personal and the pervasive through mobile wearables. The convergence between the miniaturisation of microchips (nanotechnology), intelligent textile or interfacial materials production, advances in biotechnology and the growth of wireless, ubiquitous computing emphasises not only mobility but integration into clothing or the human body. In artistic contexts one expects such integrated wearable devices to have the two-way function of interface instruments (e.g. sensor data acquisition and exchange) worn for particular purposes, either for communication with the environment or various aesthetic and compositional expressions. 'Wearable performance' briefly surveys the context for wearables in the performance arts and distinguishes display and performative/interfacial garments. It then focuses on the authors' experiments with 'design in motion' and digital performance, examining prototyping at the DAP-Lab which involves transdisciplinary convergences between fashion and dance, interactive system architecture, electronic textiles, wearable technologies and digital animation. The concept of an 'evolving' garment design that is materialised (mobilised) in live performance between partners originates from DAP Lab's work with telepresence and distributed media addressing the 'connective tissues' and 'wearabilities' of projected bodies through a study of shared embodiment and perception/proprioception in the wearer (tactile sensory processing). Such notions of wearability are applied both to the immediate sensory processing on the performer's body and to the processing of the responsive, animate environment. ARTS and CRAFTS: Predictive Scaling for Request-based Services in the Cloud
Modern web services can see well over a billion requests per day. Data and services at such scale require advanced software and large amounts of computational resources to process requests in reasonable time. Advancements in cloud computing now allow us to acquire additional resources faster than in traditional capacity planning scenarios. Companies can scale systems up and down as required, allowing them to meet the demand of their customers without having to purchase their own expensive hardware. Unfortunately, these, now routine, scaling operations remain a primarily manual task. To solve this problem, we present CRAFTS (Cloud Resource Anticipation For Timing Scaling), a system for automatically identifying application throughput and predictive scaling of cloud computing resources based on historical data. We also present ARTS (Automated Request Trace Simulator), a request based workload generation tool for constructing diverse and realistic request patterns for modern web applications. ARTS allows us to evaluate CRAFTS\u27 algorithms on a wide range of scenarios. In this thesis, we outline the design and implementation of both ARTS and CRAFTS and evaluate the effectiveness of various prediction algorithms applied to real-world request data and artificial workloads generated by ARTS
