Arithmetic progressions of cycles in outer-planar graphs
AbstractA question of Erdős asks if every graph with minimum degree 3 must contain a pair of cycles whose lengths differ by 1 or 2. Some recent work of Häggkvist and Scott (see Arithmetic progressions of cycles in graphs, preprint), whilst proving this, also shows that minimum degree 500k2 guarantees the existence of cycles whose lengths are m,m+2,m+4,…,m+2k for some m—an arithmetic progression of cycles. In like vein, we prove that an outer-planar graph of order n, with bounded internal face size, and outer face a cycle, must contain a sequence of cycles whose lengths form an arithmetic progression of length exp((clogn)1/3−loglogn). Using this we give an answer for outer-planar graphs to a question of Erdős concerning the number of different sets which can be achieved as cycle spectra
A study on prime arithmetic integer additive set-indexers of graphs
International audienceLet N 0 be the set of all non-negative integers and P(N 0) be its power set. An integer additive set-indexer (IASI) is defined as an injective function f : V (G) → P(N 0) such that the induced function f + : E(G) → P(N 0) defined by f + (uv) = f (u)+f (v) is also injective, where N 0 is the set of all non-negative integers. A graph G which admits an IASI is called an IASI graph. An IASI of a graph G is said to be an arithmetic IASI if the elements of the set-labels of all vertices and edges of G are in arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we discuss about a particular type of arithmetic IASI called prime arithmetic IASI
Small grid embeddings of 3-polytopes
We introduce an algorithm that embeds a given 3-connected planar graph as a
convex 3-polytope with integer coordinates. The size of the coordinates is
bounded by . If the graph contains a triangle we can
bound the integer coordinates by . If the graph contains a
quadrilateral we can bound the integer coordinates by . The
crucial part of the algorithm is to find a convex plane embedding whose edges
can be weighted such that the sum of the weighted edges, seen as vectors,
cancel at every point. It is well known that this can be guaranteed for the
interior vertices by applying a technique of Tutte. We show how to extend
Tutte's ideas to construct a plane embedding where the weighted vector sums
cancel also on the vertices of the boundary face
Extended h-Index Parameterized Data Structures for Computing Dynamic Subgraph Statistics
We present techniques for maintaining subgraph frequencies in a dynamic
graph, using data structures that are parameterized in terms of h, the h-index
of the graph. Our methods extend previous results of Eppstein and Spiro for
maintaining statistics for undirected subgraphs of size three to directed
subgraphs and to subgraphs of size four. For the directed case, we provide a
data structure to maintain counts for all 3-vertex induced subgraphs in O(h)
amortized time per update. For the undirected case, we maintain the counts of
size-four subgraphs in O(h^2) amortized time per update. These extensions
enable a number of new applications in Bioinformatics and Social Networking

Computing the Girth of a Planar Graph in Linear Time
The girth of a graph is the minimum weight of all simple cycles of the graph.
We study the problem of determining the girth of an n-node unweighted
undirected planar graph. The first non-trivial algorithm for the problem, given
by Djidjev, runs in O(n^{5/4} log n) time. Chalermsook, Fakcharoenphol, and
Nanongkai reduced the running time to O(n log^2 n). Weimann and Yuster further
reduced the running time to O(n log n). In this paper, we solve the problem in
O(n) time.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted to SIAM Journal on Computin
Problems in extremal graph theory
We consider a variety of problems in extremal graph and set theory.
The {\em chromatic number} of , , is the smallest integer
such that is -colorable.
The {\it square} of , written , is the supergraph of in which also
vertices within distance 2 of each other in are adjacent.
A graph is a {\it minor} of if
can be obtained from a subgraph of by contracting edges.
We show that the upper bound for
conjectured by Wegner (1977) for planar graphs
holds when is a -minor-free graph.
We also show that is equal to the bound
only when contains a complete graph of that order.
One of the central problems of extremal hypergraph theory is
finding the maximum number of edges in a hypergraph
that does not contain a specific forbidden structure.
We consider as a forbidden structure a fixed number of members
that have empty common intersection
as well as small union.
We obtain a sharp upper bound on the size of uniform hypergraphs
that do not contain this structure,
when the number of vertices is sufficiently large.
Our result is strong enough to imply the same sharp upper bound
for several other interesting forbidden structures
such as the so-called strong simplices and clusters.
The {\em -dimensional hypercube}, ,
is the graph whose vertex set is and
whose edge set consists of the vertex pairs
differing in exactly one coordinate.
The generalized Tur\'an problem asks for the maximum number
of edges in a subgraph of a graph that does not contain
a forbidden subgraph .
We consider the Tur\'an problem where is and
is a cycle of length with .
Confirming a conjecture of Erd{\H o}s (1984),
we show that the ratio of the size of such a subgraph of
over the number of edges of is ,
i.e. in the limit this ratio approaches 0
as approaches infinity
