    Improving argumentation-based recommender systems through context-adaptable selection criteria

    Recommender Systems based on argumentation represent an important proposal where the recommendation is supported by qualitative information. In these systems, the role of the comparison criterion used to decide between competing arguments is paramount and the possibility of using the most appropriate for a given domain becomes a central issue; therefore, an argumentative recommender system that offers an interchangeable argument comparison criterion provides a significant ability that can be exploited by the user. However, in most of current recommender systems, the argument comparison criterion is either fixed, or codified within the arguments. In this work we propose a formalization of context-adaptable selection criteria that enhances the argumentative reasoning mechanism. Thus, we do not propose of a new type of recommender system; instead we present a mechanism that expand the capabilities of existing argumentation-based recommender systems. More precisely, our proposal is to provide a way of specifying how to select and use the most appropriate argument comparison criterion effecting the selection on the user´s preferences, giving the possibility of programming, by the use of conditional expressions, which argument preference criterion has to be used in each particular situation.Fil: Teze, Juan Carlos Lionel.     On the construction of Dialectical Databases

    Argumentation systems have substantially evolved in the past few years, resulting in adequate tools to model some forms of common sense reasoning. This has sprung a new set of argument-based applications in diverse areas. In previous work, we defined how to use precompiled knowledge to obtain significant speed-ups in the inference process of an argument-based system. This development is based on a logic programming system with an argumentationdriven inference engine, called Observation Based Defeasible Logic Programming (ODeLP). In this setting was first presented the concept of dialectical databases, that is, data structures for storing precompiled knowledge. These structures provide precompiled information about inferences and can be used to speed up the inference process, as TMS do in general problem solvers. In this work, we present detailed algorithms for the creation of dialectical databases in ODeLP and analyze these algorithms in terms of their computational complexity

    An argumentative formalism for implementing rational agents

    The design of intelligent agents is a key issue for many applications. Although there is no universally accepted de nition of intelligence, a notion of rational agency has been proposed as an alternative for the characterization of intelligent agency. Modeling the epistemic state of a rational agent is one of the most di cult tasks to be addressed in the design process, and its complexity is directly related to the formalism used for representing the knowledge of the agent. This paper presents the main features of Observation-based Defeasible Logic Programming (ODeLP), a formalism tailored for agents that perform defeasible reasoning in dynamic domains. Most agents must have a timely interaction with their environment. Since the cognitive process of rational agents is complex and computationally expensive, this interaction is particularly hard to achieve. To solve this issue, we propose an optimization of the inference process in ODeLP based on the use of precompiled knowledge. Online communities have several distinct advantages as very open forums but they also have some deep disadvantages.     On the use of contexts for representing knowledge in defeasible argumentation

    The notion of context and its importance in knowledge representation and nonmonotonic reasoning was first discussed in Artificial Intelligence by John McCarthy. Ever since, contexts have found many applications in developing knowledge-based reasoning systems. Defeasible argumentation has gained wide acceptance within the Al community in the last years. Different argument-based frameworks have been proposed. In this respect, MTDR (Simari & Loui, 1992) has come to be one of the most successful. However, even though the formalism is theoretically sound, there exist sorne dialectical considerations involving argument construction and the inference mechanism, which impose a rather procedural approach, tightly interlocked with the system's logic. This paper discusses different uses of contexts for modelling the process of defeasible argumentation. We present an alternative view of MTDR using contexts. Our approach will allow us to discuss novel issues in MTDR, such as defining a set of moves and introducting an arbiter for regulating inference. As a result, protocols for argument generation as well as some technical considerations for speeding up inference will be kept apart from the logical machinery underlying MTDR.Eje: 2do.     Defeasible reasoning in dynamic domains

    The design of intelligent agents is a key issue for many applications. Since there is no universally accepted definition of intelligence, the notion of rational agency was proposed by Russell as an alternative for the characterization of intelligent agency. A rational agent must have models of itself and its surroundings to use them in its reasoning. To this end, this paper develops a formalism appropriate to represent the knowledge of an agent. Moreover, if dynamic environments are considered, the agent should be able to observe the changes in the world, and integrate them into its existing beliefs. This motivates the incorporation of perception capabilities into our framework. The abilities to perceive and act, essential activities in a practica! agent, demand a timely interaction with the environment. Given that the cognitive process of a rational agent is complex and computationally expensive, this interaction may not be easy to achieve. I will consider mathematics to illustrate some differences between argumentative practice and the products of it, to emphasize the need to address the different types of argumentative discourse and argumentative situation.     Contesting international trade agreements. Argumentative patterning in embedded discourses

    This chapter looks at the ideological positioning and argumentation patterning of three sets of interrelated data, which can be considered vertically organized in a hierarchical configuration: these sub-corpora consist of the drafts of a major International Trade Agreement, the TiSA, (Trade in Services Agreement), a series of revelations and exposures authored by WikiLeaks, and a collection of online publications produced by the campaigning group, Friends of the Earth International. The objective is to identify how a process of ‘entextualization’ is realized through the various discourses—from the normative codification of legislation, on to the detailed specialist exposition and critique from legal experts, and over to the affectively-charged discourse of resistance and protest in the public domain. The conceptual and explanatory frameworks for the analysis derive from two disciplinary fields, argumentative studies and discourse analysis, where the role of language studies in describing discursive construal has traditionally played rather different roles. The analysis of the corpus starts from a linguistic perspective, comparing and contrasting semantic profiling, topicalization, and verb usage over the three sub-corpora. Using accounts of argumentative structure and procedures—elaborating the notions of schema, frames, moves and strategies, it is possible to identify distinctive patterns of reasoning, revealed through linguistic indexicality. In this way, argumentation can be related to the three varying communicative contexts, their authorship, audiences and rhetorical purposes. This study is, therefore, an attempt to integrate the two fields of argumentation studies and discourse analysis more systematically, recognizing the mutual benefits this carries for both, providing a body of empirical evidence necessary to further theoretical models and theories of argumentation, on the one hand, while extending discourse analysis into more challenging areas of investigation and taking a wider textual perspective than has often been common to date
