Identifying preferred solutions for multi-objective aerodynamic design optimization
Aerodynamic designers rely on high-fidelity numerical models to approximate, within reasonable accuracy, the flow around complex aerodynamic shapes. The ability to improve the flow field behaviour through shape modifications has led to the use of optimization techniques. A significant challenge to the application of evolutionary algorithms for aerodynamic shape optimization is the often excessive number of expensive computational fluid dynamic evaluations required to identify optimal designs. The computational effort is intensified when considering multiple competing objectives, where a host of trade-off designs are possible. This research focuses on the development of control measures to improve efficiency and incorporate the domain knowledge and experience of the designer to facilitate the optimization process. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization framework is developed, which incorporates designer preferences to provide further guidance in the search. A reference point is projected on the objective landscape to guide the swarm towards solutions of interest. This point reflects the preferred compromise and is used to focus all computing effort on exploiting a preferred region of the Pareto front. Data mining tools are introduced to statistically extract information from the design space and confirm the relative influence of both variables and objectives to the preferred interests of the designer. The framework is assisted by the construction of time-adaptive Kriging models, for the management of high-fidelity problems restricted by a computational budget. A screening criterion to locally update the Kriging models in promising areas of the design space is developed, which ensures the swarm does not deviate from the preferred search trajectory. The successful integration of these design tools is facilitated through the specification of the reference point, which can ideally be based on an existing or target design. The over-arching goal of the developmental effort is to reduce the often prohibitive cost of multi-objective design to the level of practical affordability in aerospace problems. The superiority of the proposed framework over more conventional search methods is conclusively demonstrated via a series of experiments and aerodynamic design problems
Optimal design of an LCC-S WPT3 Z1 SAE J2954 compliant system, using NSGA-II with nested genetic algorithms for simultaneous local optimization
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) for electric vehicles is one of the most promising methods that, given its advantages, will drive the deployment of electric vehicles. This paper presents a mathematical optimization method applied to the complete design of an LCC-S WPT3 Z1 11 kW system that complies with the SAE J2954 standard (Wireless Power Transfer for Light-Duty Plug-in/Electric Vehicles and Alignment Methodology, 2020). A design method based on three phases is proposed, allowing the complete inductor system, including ferrites shielding and compensation circuit components, to function in any relative primary and secondary position. In Phase 1, a multi-objective NSGA-II algorithm is designed, utilizing three nested genetic algorithms. The goal is simultaneously searching for the local optimum between the primary and secondary systems in three positions. This is achieved by modeling the circuitâs electrical and electromagnetic parameters with equations, enabling an iterative process with reduced computational time. The NSGA-II algorithm yields three scenarios: primary copper volume minimization, secondary copper volume minimization, and a compromise solution that optimizes the total volume. The result is then modeled in Phase 2 using a 3D finite element program that includes ferrite and optimal shielding, obtaining the values of inductances and mutual inductance in the three positions, as well as design data for manufacturing. This result is introduced in Phase 3 to optimize compensation circuit components using a second NSGA-II algorithm with three nested genetic algorithms. Again, three scenarios are obtained based on the desired system behavior and the optimal cost of the components. The result is validated through simulation with Matlab-Simulink and experimentally using a prototype constructed for this purpose
Energy Management and Privacy in Smart Grids
Despite the importance of power systems in todayâs societies, they suffer from aging infrastructure and need to improve the efficiency, reliability, and security. Two issues that significantly limit the current gridâs efficient energy delivery and consumption are: loadollowing generation dispatch, and energy theft. A loadollowing generation dispatch is usually employed in power systems, which makes continuous small changes so as to account for differences between the actual energy demand and the predicted values. This approach has led to an average utilization of energy generation capacity below 55% [49]. Moreover, energy theft causes several billion dollar losses to U.S. utility companies [31] [16], while in developing countries it can amount to 50% of the total energy delivered [48]. Recently, the Smart Grid has been proposed as a new electric grid to modernize current power grids and enhance its efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Particularly, in the Smart Grid, a digital communication network is deployed to enable two-way communications between users and system operators. It thus makes it possible to shape the usersâ load demand curves by means of demand response strategies. Additionally, in the Smart Grid, traditional meters will be replaced with cyber-physical devices, called smart meters, capable of recording and transmitting usersâ real-time power consumption. Due to their monitoring capabilities, smart meters offer a great opportunity to detect energy theft in smart grids, but also raise serious concerns about usersâ privacy. In this dissertation, we design optimal load scheduling schemes to enhance system efficiency, and develop energy theft detection algorithms that can preserve usersâ privacy

Design optimisation of complex space systems under epistemic uncertainty
This thesis presents an innovative methodology for System Design Optimisation (SDO) through the framework of Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) that bridges system modelling, Constrained Global Optimisation (CGO), Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), System Dynamics (SD) and other mathematical tools for the design of Complex Engineered and Engineering Systems (CEdgSs) under epistemic uncertainty. The problem under analysis has analogies with what is nowadays studied as Generative Design under Uncertainty. The method is finally applied to the design of Space Systems which are Complex Engineered Systems (CEdSs) composed of multiple interconnected sub-systems. A critical aspect in the design of Space Systems is the uncertainty involved. Much of the uncertainty is epistemic and is here modelled with Dempster Shafer Theory (DST). Designing space systems is a complex task that involves the coordination of different disciplines and problems. The thesis then proposes a set of building blocks, that is a toolbox of methodologies for the solution of problems which are of interest also if considered independently. It proposes then a holistic framework that couples these building blocks to form a SDO procedure. With regard to the building blocks, the thesis includes a network-based modelling procedure for CEdSs and a generalisation for CEdgSs where the system and the whole design process are both taken into account. Then, it presents a constraint min-max solver as an algorithmic procedures for the solution of the general Optimisation Under Uncertainty (OUU) problem. An extension of the method for the Multi-Objective Problems (MOP) is also proposed in Appendix as a minor result. A side contribution for the optimisation part refers to the extension of the global optimiser Multi Population Adaptive Inflationary Differential Evolution Algorithm (MP-AIDEA) with the introduction of constraint handling and multiple objective functions. The Constraint Multi-Objective Problem (CMOP) solver is however a preliminary result and it is reported in Appendix. Furthermore, the thesis proposes a decomposition methodology for the computational reduction of UQ with DST. As a partial contribution, a second approach based on a Binary Tree decomposition is also reported in Appendix. With regard to the holistic approach, instead, the thesis gives a new dentition and proposes a framework for system network robustness and for system network resilience. It finally presents the framework for the optimisation of the whole design process through the use of a multi-layer network model. Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion. Collected Works, Volume 5
This ïŹfth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different ïŹelds of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered.
First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modiïŹed Proportional ConïŹict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classiïŹers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes.
Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identiïŹcation of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classiïŹcation.
Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classiïŹcation, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well
