    Approximate Graph Coloring by Semidefinite Programming

    We consider the problem of coloring k-colorable graphs with the fewest possible colors. We present a randomized polynomial time algorithm that colors a 3-colorable graph on nn vertices with min O(Delta^{1/3} log^{1/2} Delta log n), O(n^{1/4} log^{1/2} n) colors where Delta is the maximum degree of any vertex. Besides giving the best known approximation ratio in terms of n, this marks the first non-trivial approximation result as a function of the maximum degree Delta. This result can be generalized to k-colorable graphs to obtain a coloring using min O(Delta^{1-2/k} log^{1/2} Delta log n), O(n^{1-3/(k+1)} log^{1/2} n) colors. Our results are inspired by the recent work of Goemans and Williamson who used an algorithm for semidefinite optimization problems, which generalize linear programs, to obtain improved approximations for the MAX CUT and MAX 2-SAT problems. An intriguing outcome of our work is a duality relationship established between the value of the optimum solution to our semidefinite program and the Lovasz theta-function. We show lower bounds on the gap between the optimum solution of our semidefinite program and the actual chromatic number; by duality this also demonstrates interesting new facts about the theta-function

    A heuristic for the stability number of a graph based on convex quadratic programming and tabu search

    Recently, a characterization of the Lov´asz theta number based on convex quadratic programming was established. As a consequence of this formulation, we introduce a new upper bound on the stability number of a graph that slightly improves the theta number. Like this number, the new bound can be characterized as the minimum of a function whose values are the optimum values of convex quadratic programs. This paper is oriented mainly to the following question: how can the new bound be used to approximate the maximum stable set for large graphs? With this in mind we present a two-phase heuristic for the stability problem that begins by computing suboptimal solutions using the new bound definition. In the second phase a multi-start tabu search heuristic is implemented. The results of applying this heuristic to some DIMACS benchmark graphs are reported

    The Approximability of Assortment Optimization Under Ranking Preferences

    The main contribution of this paper is to provide best-possible approximability bounds for assortment planning under a general choice model, where customer choices are modeled through an arbitrary distribution over ranked lists of their preferred products, subsuming most random utility choice models of interest. From a technical perspective, we show how to relate this optimization problem to the computational task of detecting large independent sets in graphs, allowing us to argue that general ranking preferences are extremely hard to approximate with respect to various problem parameters. These findings are complemented by a number of approximation algorithms that attain essentially best-possible factors, proving that our hardness results are tight up to lower-order terms. Surprisingly, our results imply that a simple and widely studied policy, known as revenue-ordered assortments, achieves the best possible performance guarantee with respect to the price parameters

    On extracting maximum stable sets in perfect graphs using Lovász's theta function

    We study the maximum stable set problem. For a given graph, we establish several transformations among feasible solutions of different formulations of Lovász's theta function. We propose reductions from feasible solutions corresponding to a graph to those corresponding to its induced subgraphs. We develop an efficient, polynomial-time algorithm to extract a maximum stable set in a perfect graph using the theta function. Our algorithm iteratively transforms an approximate solution of the semidefinite formulation of the theta function into an approximate solution of another formulation, which is then used to identify a vertex that belongs to a maximum stable set. The subgraph induced by that vertex and its neighbors is removed and the same procedure is repeated on successively smaller graphs. We establish that solving the theta problem up to an adaptively chosen, fairly rough accuracy suffices in order for the algorithm to work properly. Furthermore, our algorithm successfully employs a warm-start strategy to recompute the theta function on smaller subgraphs. Computational results demonstrate that our algorithm can efficiently extract maximum stable sets in comparable time it takes to solve the theta problem on the original graph to optimality. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc
