    Implicitization of curves and (hyper)surfaces using predicted support

    We reduce implicitization of rational planar parametric curves and (hyper)surfaces to linear algebra, by interpolating the coefficients of the implicit equation. For predicting the implicit support, we focus on methods that exploit input and output structure in the sense of sparse (or toric) elimination theory, namely by computing the Newton polytope of the implicit polynomial, via sparse resultant theory. Our algorithm works even in the presence of base points but, in this case, the implicit equation shall be obtained as a factor of the produced polynomial. We implement our methods on Maple, and some on Matlab as well, and study their numerical stability and efficiency on several classes of curves and surfaces. We apply our approach to approximate implicitization, and quantify the accuracy of the approximate output, which turns out to be satisfactory on all tested examples; we also relate our measures to Hausdorff distance. In building a square or rectangular matrix, an important issue is (over)sampling the given curve or surface: we conclude that unitary complexes offer the best tradeoff between speed and accuracy when numerical methods are employed, namely SVD, whereas for exact kernel computation random integers is the method of choice. We compare our prototype to existing software and find that it is rather competitive

    Robustness problems of computational geometry algorithms is a topic that has been subject to intensive research efforts from both computer science and mathematics communities. Robustness problems are caused by the lack of precision in computations involving floating-point instead of real numbers. This paper reviews methods dealing with robustness and inaccuracy problems. It discussed approaches based on exact arithmetic, interval arithmetic and probabilistic methods. The paper investigates the possibility to use randomness at certain levels of reasoning to make geometric constructions more robust

    Delaunay Tessellations and Voronoi Diagrams in CGAL

    The Cgal library provides a rich variety of Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations. This variety covers several aspects: generators, dimensions and metrics, which we describe in Section 2. One aim of this paper is to present the main paradigms used in CGAL: Generic programming, separation between predicates/constructions and combinatorics, and exact geometric computation (not to be confused with exact arithmetic!). The first two paradigms translate into software design choices, described in Section 4, while the last covers both robustness and efficiency issues, respectively described in Sec- tion 6 and 7. Other important aspects of the Cgal library are the interface issues, be they for traversing a tessellation, or for interoperability with other libraries or languages, see Section 5. We present in Section 8 some tessellations at work in the context of surface reconstruction and mesh generation. Section 9 is devoted to some on-going and future work on periodic triangulations (triangulations in periodic spaces), and on high-quality mesh generation with optimized tessellations. Section 10 provides typical numbers in terms of efficiency and scalability for constructing tessellations, and lists the remaining weaknesses. We conclude by listing some of our directions for the future

    We present an algorithmic way of exactly computing Belyi functions for hypermaps and triangulations in genus 0 or 1, and the associated dessins, based on a numerical iterative approach initialized from a circle packing combined with subsequent lattice reduction. The main advantage compared to previous methods is that it is applicable to much larger graphs; we use very little algebraic geometry, and aim for this paper to be as self-contained as possible

    Analysis and new constructions of generalized barycentric coordinates in 2D

    Different coordinate systems allow to uniquely determine the position of a geometric element in space. In this dissertation, we consider a coordinate system that lets us determine the position of a two-dimensional point in the plane with respect to an arbitrary simple polygon. Coordinates of this system are called generalized barycentric coordinates in 2D and are widely used in computer graphics and computational mechanics. There exist many coordinate functions that satisfy all the basic properties of barycentric coordinates, but they differ by a number of other properties. We start by providing an extensive comparison of all existing coordinate functions and pointing out which important properties of generalized barycentric coordinates are not satisfied by these functions. This comparison shows that not all of existing coordinates have fully investigated properties, and we complete such a theoretical analysis for a particular one-parameter family of generalized barycentric coordinates for strictly convex polygons. We also perform numerical analysis of this family and show how to avoid computational instabilities near the polygon’s boundary when computing these coordinates in practice. We conclude this analysis by implementing some members of this family in the Computational Geometry Algorithm Library. In the second half of this dissertation, we present a few novel constructions of non-negative and smooth generalized barycentric coordinates defined over any simple polygon. In this context, we show that new coordinates with improved properties can be obtained by taking convex combinations of already existing coordinate functions and we give two examples of how to use such convex combinations for polygons without and with interior points. These new constructions have many attractive properties and perform better than other coordinates in interpolation and image deformation applications
