TLAD 2010 Proceedings:8th international workshop on teaching, learning and assesment of databases (TLAD)
This is the eighth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2010), which once again is held as a workshop of BNCOD 2010 - the 27th International Information Systems Conference. TLAD 2010 is held on the 28th June at the beautiful Dudhope Castle at the Abertay University, just before BNCOD, and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors.The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers.This year, the workshop includes an invited talk given by Richard Cooper (of the University of Glasgow) who will present a discussion and some results from the Database Disciplinary Commons which was held in the UK over the academic year. Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will also present seven peer reviewed papers, and six refereed poster papers. Of the seven presented papers, three will be presented as full papers and four as short papers. These papers and posters cover a number of themes, including: approaches to teaching databases, e.g. group centered and problem based learning; use of novel case studies, e.g. forensics and XML data; techniques and approaches for improving teaching and student learning processes; assessment techniques, e.g. peer review; methods for improving students abilities to develop database queries and develop E-R diagrams; and e-learning platforms for supporting teaching and learning

Personalised trails and learner profiling within e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on personalisation and personalised trails. We begin by introducing and defining the concepts of personalisation and personalised trails. Personalisation requires that a user profile be stored, and so we assess currently available standard profile schemas and discuss the requirements for a profile to support personalised learning. We then review techniques for providing personalisation and some systems that implement these techniques, and discuss some of the issues around evaluating personalisation systems. We look especially at the use of learning and cognitive styles to support personalised learning, and also consider personalisation in the field of mobile learning, which has a slightly different take on the subject, and in commercially available systems, where personalisation support is found to currently be only at quite a low level. We conclude with a summary of the lessons to be learned from our review of personalisation and personalised trails
Innovative Evaluation System â IESM: An Architecture for the Database Management System for Mobile Application
As the mobile applications are constantly facing a rapid development in the recent years especially in the academic environment such as student response system [1-8] used in universities and other educational institutions; there has not been reported an effective and scalable Database Management System to support fast and reliable data storage and retrieval. This paper presents Database Management Architecture for an Innovative Evaluation System based on Mobile Learning Applications. The need for a relatively stable, independent and extensible data model for faster data storage and retrieval is analyzed and investigated. It concludes by emphasizing further investigation for high throughput so as to support multimedia data such as video clips, images and documents
Data literacy in the smart university approach
Equipping classrooms with inexpensive sensors for data collection can provide students and teachers with the opportunity to interact with the classroom in a smart way. In this paper two approaches to acquiring contextual data from a classroom environment are presented. We further present our approach to analysing the collected room usage data on site, using low cost single board computer, such as a Raspberry Pi and Arduino units, performing a significant part of the data analysis on-site. We demonstrate how the usage data was used to model specifcic room usage situation as cases in a Case-based reasoning (CBR) system. The room usage data was then integrated in a room recommender system, reasoning on the formalised usage data, allowing for a convenient and intuitive end user experience based on the collected raw sensor data. Having implemented and tested our approaches we are currently investigating the possibility of using (XML)Schema-informed compression to enhance the security and efficiency of the transmission of a large number of sensor reports generated by interpreting the raw data on-site, to our central data sink. We are investigating this new approach to usage data transmission as we are aiming to integrate our on-going work into our vision of the Smart University to ensure and enhance the Smart University's data literacy
EMBODIMENT IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING
This paper aims to elaborate the implementation of Embodiment as one of the concept of
Cognitive Linguistics in second language learning and teaching. Cognitive Linguistics is
simply pointed that language is all about meaning. It views the learner as a thinking being
and an active processor of information. However, it is interesting as we found that mind and
body are not separate entities. Involved in understanding what people say to us and what we
read, Embodiment relates meanings directly to our physical experience; it emphasizes on the
way cognition is shaped by the body and its sensorimotor interaction with the world.
Furthermore, this paper is trying to show how the theoretical assumptions, basic units, and
constructs used in Cognitive Linguistics offer a better understanding of the true nature of
language and grammar, and how Embodiment may improve current second language
teaching and learning methods
A Low-Cost Unified Experimental FPGA Board for Cryptography Applications
This paper describes the evaluation of available
experimental boards, the comparison of their supported set
of experiments and other aspects. The second part of this
evaluation is focused on the design process of the PCB (Printed
Circuit Board) for an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array)
based cryptography environment suitable for evaluating the latest
trends in the IC (Integrated Circuit) security like SideâChannel
Attacks (SCA) or Physically Unclonable Function (PUF). It
leads to many criteria affecting the design process and also the
suitability for evaluating and measuring results of the attacks and
their countermeasures. The developed system should be open,
versatile and unrestricted by the U.S. law [1]
