    Application of Self Tuning Fuzzy Logic Control to Full Railway Vehicle Model

    AbstractThis paper presents the dynamic modeling and intelligent control of the full railway vehicle against the railway irregularities. In order to safe and comfortable transportation of passengers, vibration analysis and control studies are investigated by using Matlab–Simulink software. The 54 degrees of freedom railway vehicle model is used for analysis. The controllers are placed between the car body and bogies. For reducing the car body vibrations caused by a lateral and two vertical sinusoidal track irregularities, fuzzy logic and self-tuning fuzzy logic control schemes are applied to railway vehicle. The fuzzy logic based algorithms herein are used for realizing the active control of car body vibrations. The simulations of vibration analysis are obtained in time and frequency domains and compared with uncontrolled case. A good vibration reduction performance is achieved by using applied control algorithms

    State of the art of control schemes for smart systems featuring magneto-rheological materials

    This review presents various control strategies for application systems utilizing smart magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) and magneto-rheological elastomers (MRE). It is well known that both MRF and MRE are actively studied and applied to many practical systems such as vehicle dampers. The mandatory requirements for successful applications of MRF and MRE include several factors: advanced material properties, optimal mechanisms, suitable modeling, and appropriate control schemes. Among these requirements, the use of an appropriate control scheme is a crucial factor since it is the final action stage of the application systems to achieve the desired output responses. There are numerous different control strategies which have been applied to many different application systems of MRF and MRE, summarized in this review. In the literature review, advantages and disadvantages of each control scheme are discussed so that potential researchers can develop more effective strategies to achieve higher control performance of many application systems utilizing magneto-rheological materials

    Soft Computing Techniques and Their Applications in Intel-ligent Industrial Control Systems: A Survey

    Soft computing involves a series of methods that are compatible with imprecise information and complex human cognition. In the face of industrial control problems, soft computing techniques show strong intelligence, robustness and cost-effectiveness. This study dedicates to providing a survey on soft computing techniques and their applications in industrial control systems. The methodologies of soft computing are mainly classified in terms of fuzzy logic, neural computing, and genetic algorithms. The challenges surrounding modern industrial control systems are summarized based on the difficulties in information acquisition, the difficulties in modeling control rules, the difficulties in control system optimization, and the requirements for robustness. Then, this study reviews soft-computing-related achievements that have been developed to tackle these challenges. Afterwards, we present a retrospect of practical industrial control applications in the fields including transportation, intelligent machines, process industry as well as energy engineering. Finally, future research directions are discussed from different perspectives. This study demonstrates that soft computing methods can endow industry control processes with many merits, thus having great application potential. It is hoped that this survey can serve as a reference and provide convenience for scholars and practitioners in the fields of industrial control and computer science

    Control system design using fuzzy gain scheduling of PD with Kalman filter for railway automatic train operation

    The development of train control systems has progressed towards following the rapid growth of railway transport demands. To further increase the capacity of railway systems, Automatic Train Operation (ATO) systems have been widely adopted in metros and gradually applied to mainline railways to replace drivers in controlling the movement of trains with optimised running trajectories for punctuality and energy saving. Many controller design methods have been studied and applied in ATO systems. However, most researchers paid less attention to measurement noise in the development of ATO control system, whereas such noise indeed exists in every single instrumentation device and disturbs the process output of ATO. Thus, this thesis attempts to address such issues. In order to overcome measurement error, the author develops Fuzzy gain scheduling of PD (proportional and derivative) control assisted by a Kalman filter that is able to maintain the train speed within the specified trajectory and stability criteria in normal and noisy conditions due to measurement noise. Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London is selected as a case study to implement the proposed idea. The MRes project work is summarised as follows: (1) analysing literature review, (2) modelling the train dynamics mathematically, (3) designing PD controller and Fuzzy gain scheduling, (4) adding a Gaussian white noise as measurement error, (5) implementing a Kalman filter to improve the controllers, (6) examining the entire system in an artificial trajectory and a real case study, i.e. the DLR, and (7) evaluating all based on strict objectives, i.e. a ±3% allowable error limit, a punctuality limit of no later and no earlier than 30 seconds, Integrated Absolute Error (IAE) and Integrated Squared Error (ISE) performances. The results show that Fuzzy gain scheduling of PD control can cope well with the examinations in normal situations. However, such discovery is not found in noisy conditions. Nevertheless, after the introduction to Kalman filter, all control objectives are then satisfied in not only normal but also noisy conditions. The case study implemented using DLR data including on the route from Stratford International to Woolwich Arsenal indicates a satisfactory performance of the designed controller for ATO systems

    During the last few years, information technology and transportation industries, along with automotive manufacturers and academia, are focusing on leveraging intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve services related to driver experience, connected cars, Internet data plans for vehicles, traffic infrastructure, urban transportation systems, traffic collaborative management, road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plans, and the development of an effective ecosystem for vehicles, drivers, traffic controllers, city planners, and transportation applications. Moreover, the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have provided unprecedented opportunities for the development and realization of innovative intelligent transportation systems where sensors and mobile devices can gather information and cloud computing, allowing knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making. However, the development of such data-driven ITS requires the integration, processing, and analysis of plentiful information obtained from millions of vehicles, traffic infrastructures, smartphones, and other collaborative systems like weather stations and road safety and early warning systems. The huge amount of data generated by ITS devices is only of value if utilized in data analytics for decision-making such as accident prevention and detection, controlling road risks, reducing traffic carbon emissions, and other applications which bring big data analytics into the picture

    Adaptive vibration control of a nonlinear quarter car model with an electromagnetic active suspension

    The main goal of the active suspension system used in a vehicle is reducing the vehicle vibration. In this study, an adaptive control approach is applied to a nonlinear quarter car model with an active suspension system. An electromagnetic actuator is used in the active suspension system. The attractive aspect of the applied control method is not required to both vehicle parameters and actuator parameters. Using Lyapunov based stability analysis; it is shown that all the signals in the closed loop system are bounded. Hence, the applied controller ensures the vibration reduction of the nonlinear quarter car model. The simulation results show that the applied adaptive controller provide a good ride comfort despite the parametric uncertainties while keeping suspension travel and tire deflection in acceptable limits

    Applications of Genetic Algorithm and Its Variants in Rail Vehicle Systems: A Bibliometric Analysis and Comprehensive Review

    Railway systems are time-varying and complex systems with nonlinear behaviors that require effective optimization techniques to achieve optimal performance. Evolutionary algorithms methods have emerged as a popular optimization technique in recent years due to their ability to handle complex, multi-objective issues of such systems. In this context, genetic algorithm (GA) as one of the powerful optimization techniques has been extensively used in the railway sector, and applied to various problems such as scheduling, routing, forecasting, design, maintenance, and allocation. This paper presents a review of the applications of GAs and their variants in the railway domain together with bibliometric analysis. The paper covers highly cited and recent studies that have employed GAs in the railway sector and discuss the challenges and opportunities of using GAs in railway optimization problems. Meanwhile, the most popular hybrid GAs as the combination of GA and other evolutionary algorithms methods such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), neural network (NN), fuzzy-logic control, etc with their dedicated application in the railway domain are discussed too. More than 250 publications are listed and classified to provide a comprehensive analysis and road map for experts and researchers in the field helping them to identify research gaps and opportunities

    A survey of AI in operations management from 2005 to 2009

    Purpose: the use of AI for operations management, with its ability to evolve solutions, handle uncertainty and perform optimisation continues to be a major field of research. The growing body of publications over the last two decades means that it can be difficult to keep track of what has been done previously, what has worked, and what really needs to be addressed. Hence this paper presents a survey of the use of AI in operations management aimed at presenting the key research themes, trends and directions of research. Design/methodology/approach: the paper builds upon our previous survey of this field which was carried out for the ten-year period 1995-2004. Like the previous survey, it uses Elsevier’s Science Direct database as a source. The framework and methodology adopted for the survey is kept as similar as possible to enable continuity and comparison of trends. Thus, the application categories adopted are: design; scheduling; process planning and control; and quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Research on utilising neural networks, case-based reasoning (CBR), fuzzy logic (FL), knowledge-Based systems (KBS), data mining, and hybrid AI in the four application areas are identified. Findings: the survey categorises over 1,400 papers, identifying the uses of AI in the four categories of operations management and concludes with an analysis of the trends, gaps and directions for future research. The findings include: the trends for design and scheduling show a dramatic increase in the use of genetic algorithms since 2003 that reflect recognition of their success in these areas; there is a significant decline in research on use of KBS, reflecting their transition into practice; there is an increasing trend in the use of FL in quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis; and there are surprising gaps in the use of CBR and hybrid methods in operations management that offer opportunities for future research. Design/methodology/approach: the paper builds upon our previous survey of this field which was carried out for the 10 year period 1995 to 2004 (Kobbacy et al. 2007).     HETEROGENEOUS MULTI-SENSOR FUSION FOR 2D AND 3D POSE ESTIMATION

    Sensor fusion is a process in which data from different sensors is combined to acquire an output that cannot be obtained from individual sensors. This dissertation first considers a 2D image level real world problem from rail industry and proposes a novel solution using sensor fusion, then proceeds further to the more complicated 3D problem of multi sensor fusion for UAV pose estimation. One of the most important safety-related tasks in the rail industry is an early detection of defective rolling stock components. Railway wheels and wheel bearings are two components prone to damage due to their interactions with the brakes and railway track, which makes them a high priority when rail industry investigates improvements to current detection processes. The main contribution of this dissertation in this area is development of a computer vision method for automatically detecting the defective wheels that can potentially become a replacement for the current manual inspection procedure. The algorithm fuses images taken by wayside thermal and vision cameras and uses the outcome for the wheel defect detection. As a byproduct, the process will also include a method for detecting hot bearings from the same images. We evaluate our algorithm using simulated and real data images from UPRR in North America and it will be shown in this dissertation that using sensor fusion techniques the accuracy of the malfunction detection can be improved. After the 2D application, the more complicated 3D application is addressed. Precise, robust and consistent localization is an important subject in many areas of science such as vision-based control, path planning, and SLAM. Each of different sensors employed to estimate the pose have their strengths and weaknesses. Sensor fusion is a known approach that combines the data measured by different sensors to achieve a more accurate or complete pose estimation and to cope with sensor outages. In this dissertation, a new approach to 3D pose estimation for a UAV in an unknown GPS-denied environment is presented. The proposed algorithm fuses the data from an IMU, a camera, and a 2D LiDAR to achieve accurate localization. Among the employed sensors, LiDAR has not received proper attention in the past; mostly because a 2D LiDAR can only provide pose estimation in its scanning plane and thus it cannot obtain full pose estimation in a 3D environment. A novel method is introduced in this research that enables us to employ a 2D LiDAR to improve the full 3D pose estimation accuracy acquired from an IMU and a camera. To the best of our knowledge 2D LiDAR has never been employed for 3D localization without a prior map and it is shown in this dissertation that our method can significantly improve the precision of the localization algorithm.
