An Adaptive Strategy for Sensory Processing
Recognizing objects and detecting associations among them is essential for the survival of organisms. The ability to perform these tasks is derived from the representations of objects obtained through processing information along sensory pathways. Our current understanding of sensory processing is based on two sets of foundational theories – The Efficient Coding Hypothesis and hierarchical assembly of object representations. These theories suggest that sensory processing aims to identify independent features of the environment and progressively represent objects in terms of comprehensive combinations of these features. Separately, the two sets of theories have successfully explained the detection of associations and perceptual invariance, respectively; however, reconciling them together in one unified theory has remained challenging. Independent features are deemed essential for detecting association by the Efficient coding hypothesis, but to achieve consistency in representations, multiple comprehensive structures corresponding to the same object must be hierarchically assembled, ignoring independence among such structures.
Here we propose an alternative framework for sensory processing in which the system, instead of finding the truly independent components of the environment, aims to represent objects based on their most informative structures. Using theoretical arguments, we show that following such a strategy allows the system to efficiently represent sensory cues without necessarily acquiring knowledge about statistical properties of all possible inputs. Through mathematical simulations, we find that the framework can describe the known characteristics of early sensory processing stages and permits consistent input representations observed at later stages of processing. We also demonstrate that the framework can be implemented in a biologically plausible neuronal circuit and explain aspects of experience and learning from corrupted inputs. Thus, this framework provides a novel perspective and a unified description of sensory processing in its entirety
Methods and Apparatus for Autonomous Robotic Control
Sensory processing of visual, auditory, and other sensor information (e.g., visual imagery, LIDAR, RADAR) is conventionally based on "stovepiped," or isolated processing, with little interactions between modules. Biological systems, on the other hand, fuse multi-sensory information to identify nearby objects of interest more quickly, more efficiently, and with higher signal-to-noise ratios. Similarly, examples of the OpenSense technology disclosed herein use neurally inspired processing to identify and locate objects in a robot's environment. This enables the robot to navigate its environment more quickly and with lower computational and power requirements
Cognition and Learning: The Implications of a Situated Connectionist Perspective for Theory and Practice in Education.
In this dissertation I attempt to construct a framework for an alternate theory of instruction, starting from the position that education has no theory of learning; instead, what passes for theories of learning are actually descriptions of the conditions under which knowledge is acquired. Descriptive theorizing does not serve education well because it is not likely, being a description of what is known told in terms of assumed categories, to be generative or adaptive. I question the naturalness of current assumptions about thought and learning by tracing the consolidation of the present discursive formation around a presumed unity of logic, language, and causality based on the forms of geometry. A crucial move in that consolidation was Descartes\u27 formulation of thought as essentially logical. As our culture deals with the contradictions inherent in this formulation, new disciplines of knowledge arise. Most interestingly for education, the new disciplines of cognitive science and artificial intelligence have pushed the idea that humans are computers, that we reason by calculation, to the breaking point. It has become increasingly obvious that humans cannot think according to the forms of logic and connectionist theories which propose alternate images of mind are gaining ascendance. The implications for education are large. I extensively explore the implications of connectionist modeling for a distinctively educational model of learning. These connectionist theories substitute a shifting and uncertain web of associations for the solid storage metaphor common to most educational theorizing and methods. The stability which can no longer be located in the sovereign self must instead be found in the world and in the socially-based practices that constitute both the world and the individual. Situated cognition, pragmatists, and poststructural sociologists are explored to understand the new constellation surrounding learning. A short exploratory study, based on the principles that emerged from the study, of an alternate way to teach categories is experimentally explored and found successful. Visual recognition of objects : behavioral, computational, and neurobiological aspects
I surveyed work on visual object recognition and perception. In animals, vision has been studied mainly on the behavioral and neurobiological levels. Behavioral data typically show what the visual system, by itself or together with the rest of the organism, is capable of. They show, for example, that humans can recognie objects regardless of size and position, but that rotated objects pose problems. Important insights into the organization of behavior have also been provided by people who suffered localized brain damage. We have learned that the brain is divided into areas subserving different and relatively well-defined behaviors. The visual system itself is also organized in different subsystems; the visual cortex alone contains nearly twenty maps of the visual field. And individual neurons respond selectively to visual stimuli, e.g., the orientation of line segments, color, direction of motion, and, most intriguingly, faces. The question is how the actions of all these neurons produce the behavior we observe. How do neurons represent the shape of objects such that they can be recognized? Before we can answer the question, we have to understand the computational aspect of shape representation, the nature of the problem as it were. Many methods for representing shape have been explored, mainly by computer scientists, but so far no satisfactory answers have been found

The Role of Knowledge in Visual Shape Representation
This report shows how knowledge about the visual world can be built into a shape representation in the form of a descriptive vocabulary making explicit the important geometrical relationships comprising objects' shapes. Two computational tools are offered: (1) Shapestokens are placed on a Scale-Space Blackboard, (2) Dimensionality-reduction captures deformation classes in configurations of tokens. Knowledge lies in the token types and deformation classes tailored to the constraints and regularities ofparticular shape worlds. A hierarchical shape vocabulary has been implemented supporting several later visual tasks in the two-dimensional shape domain of the dorsal fins of fishes
Automatic face recognition using stereo images
Face recognition is an important pattern recognition problem, in the study of both natural and artificial learning problems. Compaxed to other biometrics, it is non-intrusive, non- invasive and requires no paxticipation from the subjects. As a result, it has many applications varying from human-computer-interaction to access control and law-enforcement to crowd surveillance. In typical optical image based face recognition systems, the systematic vaxiability arising from representing the three-dimensional (3D) shape of a face by a two-dimensional (21)) illumination intensity matrix is treated as random vaxiability. Multiple examples of the face displaying vaxying pose and expressions axe captured in different imaging conditions. The imaging environment, pose and expressions are strictly controlled and the images undergo rigorous normalisation and pre-processing. This may be implemented in a paxtially or a fully automated system. Although these systems report high classification accuracies (>90%), they lack versatility and tend to fail when deployed outside laboratory conditions. Recently, more sophisticated 3D face recognition systems haxnessing the depth information have emerged. These systems usually employ specialist equipment such as laser scanners and structured light projectors. Although more accurate than 2D optical image based recognition, these systems are equally difficult to implement in a non-co-operative environment. Existing face recognition systems, both 2D and 3D, detract from the main advantages of face recognition and fail to fully exploit its non-intrusive capacity. This is either because they rely too much on subject co-operation, which is not always available, or because they cannot cope with noisy data. The main objective of this work was to investigate the role of depth information in face recognition in a noisy environment. A stereo-based system, inspired by the human binocular vision, was devised using a pair of manually calibrated digital off-the-shelf cameras in a stereo setup to compute depth information. Depth values extracted from 2D intensity images using stereoscopy are extremely noisy, and as a result this approach for face recognition is rare. This was cofirmed by the results of our experimental work. Noise in the set of correspondences, camera calibration and triangulation led to inaccurate depth reconstruction, which in turn led to poor classifier accuracy for both 3D surface matching and 211) 2 depth maps. Brain Computations and Connectivity is about how the brain works. In order to understand this, it is essential to know what is computed by different brain systems; and how the computations are performed.
The aim of this book is to elucidate what is computed in different brain systems; and to describe current biologically plausible computational approaches and models of how each of these brain systems computes.
Understanding the brain in this way has enormous potential for understanding ourselves better in health and in disease. Potential applications of this understanding are to the treatment of the brain in disease; and to artificial intelligence which will benefit from knowledge of how the brain performs many of its extraordinarily impressive functions.
This book is pioneering in taking this approach to brain function: to consider what is computed by many of our brain systems; and how it is computed, and updates by much new evidence including the connectivity of the human brain the earlier book: Rolls (2021) Brain Computations: What and How, Oxford University Press.
