    Age specific relation in blood pressure with some anthropometrical variables of women in Latvia: a rural-urban comparison

    The aims of this study were to describe and compare the relationships between some variables of anthropometrical measurements and the blood pressure of women according to the age group categories in the urban and the rural population in Latvia. For this purpose 369 women (urban, 197 and rural, 172) were anthropometrically examined during the period of 2001–2005. The body height, the body weight, three circumferences (chest, waist, hip) and four skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac) were measured. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated and studied. The difference between rural and urban women in systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure was found to be statistically significant. All the variables of the anthropometrical measurements and the age were significantly positive with blood pressure. The relationships between the variables of anthropometrical measurements and the age were assessed through the stepwise multiple regression analysis. All the anthropometrical variables appear as significant predictors of blood pressure and enter the regression equations in urban and rural populations of women in Latvia. Future studies, based on the interpretation of anthropometric measurements and their changes in the urban and rural women aged 21–45 years in Latvia, should also be carried out

    Somatotypes and hand-grip strength analysis of elite cadet sambo athletes

    The objectives of this research were to establish somatotype and hand-grip strength between elite cadet male and female sambo athletes divided by weight categories. A total of 97 elite cadet sambo athletes, participants of the World Cadets Sambo Championships 2018 participated in the study. Male and female sambo athletes were divided by official weight categories. Anthropometrical variables were taken in order to calculate somatotypes and hand-grip strength. A one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc tests were used to compare group differences by weight categories. Results of this study provide the first description of somatotype and hand-grip strength of elite male and female cadet sambo athletes in relation to weight category. A typical somatotype in male sambo athletes was endomorphic mesomorphs with a predominance of musculoskeletal tissue, while female athletes differed concerning weight category. Overall, an increase in handgrip strength across weight categories was noted. Hand-grip strength increases linearly from the lightest to the heaviest weight category except in -66 and -84 kg in male athletes. Differences in handgrip strength of female athletes were detected between the lightest group and last six groups in all three variables in favor of last six as well as -44 and kg -48 kg compared with the heaviest. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first normative data of somatotype and hand-grip strength analyses in relation to age, gender, and weight categories of cadet sambo athletes. The anthropometric profile of sambo athletes changed according to their weight category. Mesomorphy was the most dominant somatotype component in male athletes, while female had three different types of somatotype component in relation to weight category. In conclusion, we found differences in hand-grip strength related to weight category, which can be linked to the muscle mass of athletes. Future studies should focus on somatotype and strength handgrip values of international compared to national level sambo athletes

    Selected Physical Characteristics of Medical Students

    The purpose of this study was to measure selected anthropometrical characteris-tics, motor abilities and cardiorespiratory functions of medical students. Eighty-seven students were involved in this investigation. The students were categorized into five groups: (1) recreational, doing sport activities irregularly, (2) basketball and (3) handball players, having training at least two times per week, as well as men (4) and women (5) students entering medical school. In all groups the mean body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio were at the upper level of the normal range, while body fat percentage was similar to standards for sedentary subjects. Better motor per-formances were obtained from the basketball and handball players than from the other groups. Static strength for the sample was somewhat above the normal sedentary level. The resting blood pressure and heart rate for most subjects were in the normal. Cardiovascular risk factors were found in six students. Their systolic blood pressure was above 140 mm Hg. There were no sub-jects identified with low blood pressure. The heart rate was elevated for three students from the recreational group, and in the women. Bradycardia did not occur. The vital capacity and the ability to hold one’s breath was at the upper level of the normal range. The present results emphasis the need to improve the students` prevention oriented life style through participation in exercising

    Functional assessment of the cervical spine in F-16 pilots with and without neck pain

    Introduction: Spinal symptoms in fighter pilots are a serious aeromedical problem. The most common neck complaints are muscular pain and strain. The aim of the current study was to determine possible differences in the cervical range of motion (CROM), neck position sense, and neck muscle strength between pilots with and without neck pain. Methods: There were 90 male F-I 6 pilots who volunteered, of which 17 had experienced bilateral neck pain. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect personal information. The maximum isometric neck flexion/extension and lateral flexion strength, the neck position sense, and the cervical range of motion were measured. Results: There were no significant differences between healthy pilots and those with neck pain concerning neck Muscle strength and neck position sense. The neck pain group had a limited CROM in the sagittal plane (130 degrees; CI: 116 degrees-144 degrees) and in the transversal plane (155 degrees; CI: 140 degrees-170 degrees) compared to the healthy pilots. Discussion: In the current study we screened for different motor skills so that deficits Could be detected and retraining programs could be implemented when necessary. According to our results, individual retraining programs might reduce neck pain and therefore a well-instructed training program to maintain a proper active CROM should be implemented. Future Studies should investigate the effectiveness of this kind of program
